Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reggie Ballantyne is a firebug for the times. He's obsessively clever, an urban warrior of strong convictions, and he's using Australia's crazy, changing weather. It's baking hot and hasn't rained for months. Attacking some of the biggest wheat fields in the world, Reggie thinks he's his own man. But Reggie's a puppet, selling himself for a song. To China, the rising superstar of the world economy. To puppeteers playing him in a game of massive stakes built on cunning and fear. Harvest of Greed takes the reader on a fast-paced ride through skulduggery by master-manipulators in turbulent global markets. There is depth and truth behind every twist and turn, in the characters, good and bad, and in failures of financial, political and media systems which fan the flames. Young Reggie is caught by country cop Bruce Brown then freed on the instructions of lazy, corrupt police headquarters. They're too busy to bother. What a mistake. Big-city screen jockey Alix Kingston's telephone rings. To hell with office politics: sharp instincts lead him to the knock-out discovery that Chinese government officials are paying Reggie to fulfill his firebug dreams. China! The economic saviour of the world. What is it doing in arson attacks on Australian wheat? Lawless Chinese business practices lead Alix on a treacherous chase through Hong Kong, Outback China and Taiwan. This reveals a world of ruthless Chinese capitalists, decked out in Ray-Ban sunglasses and Gucci suits, and ever-spreading concrete over land grabbed from peasants. Is China saving the world or eating it alive? Bruce Brown and Alix Kingston form an unlikely alliance based on divergent needs to chase down a world-shaking scheme which goes far beyond simple arson. Shimmering heatwaves from the Australian wheatfield firebomb attacks hang like a mirage over a new world where rampant lust for money meets the climate crisis and global food fears in battles across grains bowls and commodities markets. Alix faces the challenge of his life chasing answers in a crooked global game of greed.

"One of those rare, truly great books that can change the world."-John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution The renowned scientist who fundamentally changed the way we view primates and our relationship with the animal kingdom now turns her attention to an incredibly important and deeply personal issue-taking a stand for a more sustainable world. In this provocative and encouraging book, Jane Goodall sounds a clarion call to Western society, urging us to take a hard look at the food we produce and consume-and showing us how easy it is to create positive change.Offering her hopeful, but stirring vision, Goodall argues convincingly that each individual can make a difference. Download or read book Everyday Greed Analysis and Appraisal written by Michael S. Pritchard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines how greed should be understood and appraised. Roundly condemned by virtually all religions, greed receives mixed appraisals in the domains of business and economics. The volume examines these mixed appraisals and how they fare in light of their implications for greed in our everyday world. Greed in children is uniformly criticized by parents, other adults, and even children’s peers. However, in adulthood, greed is commended by some as essential to profit-seeking in business and for offering the greatest promise in promoting economic prosperity for everyone. Those who advocate a more permissive position on greed in the adult world typically concede that some constraints on greed are needed. However, the supporting literature offers little analysis of what greed is (as distinct from, for example, the effort to meet modest needs, or the pursuit of ordinary self-interested ends). It offers little clarification of what sorts of constraints on greed are needed. Nor is careful attention given to difficulties children might have in making a transition without moral loss from regarding greed as inappropriate to its later qualified acceptance. Through a secular approach, this book attempts to make significant inroads in remedying these shortcomings.

Book excerpt: A captivating first-person look at one of the world's most powerful prosperity dynasties that offers a unique perspective on greed, the Church, and the journey toward Truth. Millions desperate for hope and solutions are enticed by the promise of the prosperity gospel--that God will do whatever they need with just a little faith and a financial gift. All the while, prosperity preachers exploit the poor and needy to stockpile their riches. What can followers of the true gospel do to combat the deception? Through a remarkable and fascinating journey, Costi Hinn went from a next-generation prosperity preacher to the first to abandon the family faith and share the true gospel. Nephew of the world-famous televangelist, Benny Hinn, Costi had a front-row seat to the inner workings and theology of the prosperity gospel. But as Costi's faith deepened, so did his questions about prosperity teaching. As the deceptions in his past were exposed, Costi came face to face with the hypocrisy and devastation caused by his belief system, and the overwhelming truth about the real Jesus Christ. This captivating look into the daily lives of one of the world's leading prosperity dynasties offers a thoughtful perspective on the perils of greed, the power of the true gospel, and hope for the future of the global church. Through real-life stories, Costi challenges and equips readers to be living lights pointing the way to the true gospel and the saving grace of Christ. God, Greed, and the (Prosperity) Gospel will bolster your faith and encourage your own journey toward the Truth. Spanish edition also available.

Download or read book Stolen Harvest written by Vandana Shiva and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the farmer, the seed is not merely the source of future plants and food; it is a vehicle through which culture and history can be preserved and spread to future generations. For centuries, farmers have evolved crops and produced an incredible diversity of plants that provide life-sustaining nutrition. In India alone, the ingenuity of farmers has produced over 200,000 varieties of rice, many of which now line store shelves around the world. This productive tradition, however, is under attack as globalized, corporate regimes increasingly exploit intellectual property laws to annex these sustaining seeds and remove them from the public sphere. In Stolen Harvest: The Hijacking of the Global Food Supply, Shiva explores the devastating effects of commercial agriculture and genetic engineering on the food we eat, the farmers who grow it, and the soil that sustains it. This prescient critique and call to action covers some of the most pressing topics of this ongoing dialogue, from the destruction of local food cultures and the privatization of plant life, to unsustainable industrial fish farming and safety concerns about corporately engineered foods. The preeminent agricultural activist and scientist of a generation, Shiva implores the farmers and consumers of the world to make a united stand against the genetically modified crops and untenable farming practices that endanger the seeds and plants that give us life.

Abby hatches a bold plan to make sure that the transplant goes instead to a dying seventeen-year-old boy who is also a perfect match. The repercussions are powerful and swift and Abby is shaken but unrepentant—until she meets the frail, tormented Nina. Then a new heart for Nina Voss suddenly appears, her transplant is completed, and Abby makes a terrible discovery: Nina’s heart has not come through the proper channels. Every move Abby makes spawns a vicious backlash and, in a ship anchored in the stagnant waters of Boston Harbor, a final, grisly discovery lies waiting…
