Book From Handpumps to Health

Download or read book From Handpumps to Health written by Maggie Black and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case histories of water and sanitation schemes described in this volume can best be understood by identifying the moments at which critical hurdles were encountered and surmounted. The first case study, which concerns Bangladesh, discusses promising prospects that existed amid the pollution and the technical and managerial expansion of the crash phase of 1972-1976. Also discussed are moves towards community participation; the linking of water to sanitation and health; increased community outreach and changing technological challenge in the 1980s; and the broadened health impact. The second case study, which concerns India, describes program management in the 1970s; the process of advancing technology through handpump innovations; community involvement and maintenance; the move from technology transfer to capacity-building in hardware; the public health dimension of strengthened software; a push for water for all in 1985; and dracunculiasis eradication. The third case study, which concerns Nigeria, offers a blueprint for multisectorial and integrated action using low-cost technology. Topics include promotion of behavioral change through health education; the adoption of drilling and borehole technology; the move from pilot project to national strategy; evaluation of the impact on health; a redesigned software strategy; and the process of scaling up rural water projects. Book Diverting the Flow

Download or read book Diverting the Flow written by Margreet Zwarteveen and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the South Asian region, water determines livelihoods and in some cases even survival. However, water also creates exclusions. Access to water, and its social organisation, are intimately tied up with power relations. This book provides an overview of gender, equity and water issues relevant to South Asia. The essays empirically illustrate and theoretically argue how gender intersects with other axes of social difference such as class, caste, ethnicity, age and religion to shape water access, use and management practices. Divided into six thematic sections, each of which starts with an introduction of relevant concepts, debates and theories, the book looks at laws and rights; policies; technologies and intervention strategies. In all, the book clearly shows how understanding and changing the use, distribution and management of water is conditional upon understanding and accommodating gender relations. Published by Zubaan.

Book Providing Safe Drinking Water in Small Systems

Download or read book Providing Safe Drinking Water in Small Systems written by Joseph Cotruvo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continued lack of access to adequate amounts of safe drinking water is one of the primary causes of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide and a serious situation which governments, international agencies and private organizations are striving to alleviate. Barriers to providing safe drinking water for rural areas and small communities that must be overcome include the financing and stability of small systems, their operation, and appropriate, cost-effective technologies to treat and deliver water to consumers. While we know how to technically produce safe drinking water, we are not always able to achieve sustainable safe water supplies for small systems in developed and developing countries. Everyone wants to move rapidly to reach the goal of universal safe drinking water, because safe water is the most fundamental essential element for personal and social health and welfare. Without safe water and a safe environment, sustained personal economic and cultural development is impossible. Often small rural systems are the last in the opportunity line. Safe Drinking Water in Small Systems describes feasible technologies, operating procedures, management, and financing opportunities to alleviate problems faced by small water systems in both developed and developing countries. In addition to widely used traditional technologies this reference presents emerging technologies and non-traditional approaches to water treatment, management, sources of energy, and the delivery of safe water.

Book Water and Aid in Mozambique

Download or read book Water and Aid in Mozambique written by Emily Van Houweling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysing how water development projects unfolded in five rural communities in Mozambique, Emily Van Houweling offers an alternative perspective on water and the politicised nature of water management in the region. Using a hydro-social cycle framework, she demonstrates how water is tied to everyday life in matrilineal Nampula and how social relations, gender roles, and local politics were reconfigured during the project. While centring the experience of community members, Van Houweling also includes the perspectives of project implementers, showing how project plans were translated and negotiated as they worked their way down to the community. Employing the concept of organisational culture, Van Houweling reveals the tensions that resulted from different actors' decision-making processes and motivations, and illuminates possible explanations for the gaps between policy and practice. Exploring women's empowerment, community ownership, and participation, this book facilitates innovative ways for thinking about evaluation, sustainability, and gender-water relations.

Book Drinking Water Security in Rural India

Download or read book Drinking Water Security in Rural India written by M. Dinesh Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the multi-pronged strategy for achieving sustainable rural domestic water supply in India. It deepens the understanding of groundwater (predominant source of water supply) behaviour in response to natural processes in different geological settings, analyses the factors influencing the performance of water supply schemes; identifies the conditions under which groundwater-based drinking water sources become sustainable, suggests measures for improving the sustainability of drinking water wells in hard rock regions (covering 2/3rd of India’s geographical area), presents a decision-making framework for planning rural water supply schemes in the country for ensuring long-term sustainability, and suggests physical strategies and policy measures for achieving them. The analyses for development and validation of various models that explain groundwater system behaviour and performance of rural water supply schemes are undertaken for different geological settings in Maharashtra, as the state represents a microcosm of the various hydrological, topographical, and geohydrological conditions encountered in the country. The final analysis for proposing nation-wide strategies considers the various hydrological, geological, geohydrological, and topographical and climatic settings and groundwater contamination and pollution in the country.
