Book Dictionary of Mental Handicap

Download or read book Dictionary of Mental Handicap written by Mary P. Lindsey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years the policy of isolating and institutionalizing mentally handicapped people has gradually been dismantled and a major shift to community care has taken place. But integration within the general community and access to special services has greatly increased the number of people with a need to know about mental handicap. Each profession or discipline has its own terminology; nowadays one must be conversant with all of them. In this comprehensive dictionary Mary Lindsey has brought together terms and concepts from a wide variety of fields. Approximately 2,400 entries are included, ranging in length from concise explanations to encyclopaedic essays, but always expressed in clear, simple language. Where appropriate, suggestions for further reading are made and possible sources of further information given. An extensive system of cross-references leads the interested reader further and makes valuable connections between entries. The medical aspects of mental handicap, its causes, prognoses and treatments, are of course covered in detail. But although the cause of mental handicap may be medical, subsequent interventions may be sociological, psychological, educational, medical, paramedical or psychiatric. This is reflected in the choice of entries, making the Dictionary an invaluable source of reference for all those involved with mentally handicapped people in any capacity whatsoever.

Book Anxiety in Childhood and Adolescence

Download or read book Anxiety in Childhood and Adolescence written by Frank Carter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many counter-productive behaviours in children may be anxiety-related and in this book, originally published in 1988, the authors proposed that a disabling level of tension and stress experienced by many children frequently goes unrecognised. This often leads to failure to analyse psychological and educational problems and inappropriate ways of dealing with them. This book was aimed at all professional staff working with children, particularly educational and clinical psychologists and teachers. The book is however written in a jargon-free manner and should have wide appeal. The authors show how tension reduction therapy can help children overcome many problems which may manifest themselves as disturbed behaviour, poor sleep patterns, anorexia, school phobia, or poor relationship-making skills. As an extreme example it is shown how significant gains can be made by cerebral palsied children using these approaches. The book, however, is not just a manual of relaxation training; it advocates a less stress-inducing approach generally to working with children, and gives many case studies.

Book Parents as Care Managers

Download or read book Parents as Care Managers written by Gillian Bridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume examines the inclusion of disabled children as a category of children in need under the Children Act 1989 and as eligible for assessments of need under the NHS and Community Care Act 1990 has drawn renewed attention to the plight of these children and their families. This book presents the findings from a study of parents whose child has cerebral palsy. The research undertaken at the cost of social policy change focuses on the apparent gap between the well-argued proposals for community care and the experiences of carers. A bewildering picture emerges of inadequate services and treatments from the health, education and social services in the public, voluntary and private sectors. Parents experience isolation and stress as they explore ways to improve the quality of their children’s lives by experimenting with unregulated and under-researched treatments for an incurable physical condition. The conclusion that there has been deterioration in provision for these families is a serious indictment on current social policy direction.
