Book excerpt: Hallucinations, for most people, imply madness. But there are many different types of non-psychotic hallucination caused by various illnesses or injuries, by intoxication--even, for many people, by falling sleep. From the elementary geometrical shapes that we see when we rub our eyes to the complex swirls and blind spots and zigzags of a visual migraine, hallucination takes many forms. At a higher level, hallucinations associated with the altered states of consciousness that may come with sensory deprivation or certain brain disorders can lead to religious epiphanies or conversions. Drawing on a wealth of clinical examples from his own patients as well as historical and literary descriptions, Oliver Sacks investigates the fundamental differences and similarities of these many sorts of hallucinations, what they say about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture's folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all.

What people really need is not a brilliant mind but a special heart that listens. This book will not make me popular; quite the contrary. I have to believe that mankind is NOT born evil, but is taught to hate. Religion has taught who among us is worthy and not, thus dividing us with bigotry and judgment. I have to believe we come into this world pure and are simply 'taught' who we must hate. As a child my parents often wondered why, they didn't name me "Why...'" All the "blind faith", "Never question God" and "Because I said so" responses just made me question even more, because none of the answers made sense or could be proven.. Why can't I "question God", "God" is the only one that could answer my questions. Also, FYI, I was saved (profession of faith), baptized twice (I switched religions) and confirmed. Baptist and Episcopalian... So don't think I haven't been through the "Holy Routine". Plus vacation Bible school from birth to 12 years old and church three times a week from birth to 17, when I finally went to college. I never personally subscribed to another organized religion from that day forward.

Book Hellucinate

Download or read book Hellucinate written by Linda Olarin and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was a fun-loving grandmother who would go out of my way to create wonderful memories and adventures for my grandchildren. Unfortunately, I suffered a very unexpected debilitating health crisis, and it took me a while to get back on my feet. I was thrilled when I was finally able to regain my independence and move into a new apartment. I was beginning to feel like my old self again until one fateful night when the unthinkable happened. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone because I was afraid that nobody would believe me. I felt totally alone and I was in my own private hell. I was terrified that my nightmare would never end. I knew that if someone very close to me told me this same story, I would feel confused and helpless about what to say or how to get them help. It was just one of those secrets that nobody would be able to keep. They would have to tell someone because if they didn't, something terrible could happen and someone could get seriously hurt or even worse. My secret was revealed late one night in the most humiliating way that I could have ever imagined. Every word of this unbelievable story is true, and I write about it in vivid detail because that is exactly how I remember it. The undying help and support from my children inspired me to share my story. I wanted to let other people who have gone through this know that they are not alone.

In addition, it presents the point of view of meditation and the practice of the spiritual life, paying special attention to contemplative practice and meditation as taught in the Kagyu and Nyingma schools.

Download or read book Hellucination written by MR Stephen Scott Biro and published by Stephen S Biro. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the LIMITED WRATH EDITION of Hellucination. A drug-fueled trip through the gruesome levels of Hell may sound like a fictional horror story to some, and since the traveler in question was movie distributor Stephen Biro, it could just as easily have been one of his film projects. But Stephen's experiences were the real, life-changing sort. They're also proof that the Lord does work in mysterious ways -- extending all the way to squares of LSD and nitrous oxide cartridges. Armed with psychedelics, hallucinogenics and a brave desire to meet God no matter the personal cost, Stephen pushed beyond the boundaries of safe drug use. He took the most nightmarish of trips from a cramped one-bedroom apartment that he used for running his underground video business. With initial difficulty finding God in his altered state, Stephen instead encountered depravity and grotesquery enough to make his soul weep, but he pushed on. And if that wasn't bad enough, his Hellish experiences bled over into his waking days, and his friends and acquaintances began identifying themselves to him as Antichrists, deities and other assorted beings from "the other side." Reality was blurring and shifting, and Stephen was run utterly ragged. Could he fulfill his quest to learn universal truths before his extreme drug use took its toll? Hellucination: A Memoir spares no disturbing detail of the unusual route that one man took to find Christ and the God of the Bible. The memoir also follows younger Stephen through his 1970s childhood and his bizarre early encounters with religion that drove him to Atheism. "An utterly surreal memoir. I'd say it was 'mindbending,' but "HELLUCINATION" doesn't just bend your mind, it twists it, stretches it, stabs it, and tosses it on the grill!" - Jeff Strand, author of the upcoming book, "PRESSURE" and "WOLF HUNT" He's been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award in 2006, 2008, and 2010. "HELLUCINATION takes the form of a page-turning memoir, combining personal trip reporting with science fiction, horror movie, and religious mythologies, philosophical speculation on the nature of the author's experiments with psychedelic drug combinations, strange encounters with other people who may not be what they seem, and the rationale behind his spiritual conversion from atheism to Christianity." --David Jay Brown Author of "Mavericks of the Mind" and "Conversations on the Edge of the Apocalypse" "HELLUCINATION is a powerful read. In fact, it might distinctly appeal to fantasy readers, film lovers and lovers of fiction. Biro writes passionately with a purpose... you may end of ripping your eyes out afterwards though." -- Review, Horrornews.net Mind-boggling and enthralling. The visualization techniques used is astounding. - Paul White - Producer of Bride of Re-Animator and Brian Yuzna's Society I felt myself questioning my faith, or lack of faith, on religion, Jesus, God, the Devil, and what the purpose and point of my life and existence really was/is. I think that is the point of the book. The book raises awareness and makes readers think about the meaning of life and what their purpose is in it. That, in itself, is a pretty scary thing to think and ponder about. - Hellucination - Book review by www.shuizmz.com Cinematic... it's going to scare the Hell out of some Christians. - Jim VanBebber - Director of The Manson Family and Deadbeat At Dawn

Book Brain On Fire My Month of Madness

Download or read book Brain On Fire My Month of Madness written by Susannah Cahalan and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'My first serious blackout marked the line between sanity and insanity. Though I would have moments of lucidity over the coming days and weeks, I would never again be the same person ...' Susannah Cahalan was a happy, clever, healthy twenty-four-year old. Then one day she woke up in hospital, with no memory of what had happened or how she had got there. Within weeks, she would be transformed into someone unrecognizable, descending into a state of acute psychosis, undergoing rages and convulsions, hallucinating that her father had murdered his wife; that she could control time with her mind. Everything she had taken for granted about her life, and who she was, was wiped out. Brain on Fire is Susannah's story of her terrifying descent into madness and the desperate hunt for a diagnosis, as, after dozens of tests and scans, baffled doctors concluded she should be confined in a psychiatric ward. It is also the story of how one brilliant man, Syria-born Dr Najar, finally proved - using a simple pen and paper - that Susannah's psychotic behaviour was caused by a rare autoimmune disease attacking her brain. His diagnosis of this little-known condition, thought to have been the real cause of devil-possessions through history, saved her life, and possibly the lives of many others. Cahalan takes readers inside this newly-discovered disease through the progress of her own harrowing journey, piecing it together using memories, journals, hospital videos and records. Written with passionate honesty and intelligence, Brain on Fire is a searingly personal yet universal book, which asks what happens when your identity is suddenly destroyed, and how you get it back. 'With eagle-eye precision and brutal honesty, Susannah Cahalan turns her journalistic gaze on herself as she bravely looks back on one of the most harrowing and unimaginable experiences one could ever face: the loss of mind, body and self. Brain on Fire is a mesmerizing story' -Mira Bartók, New York Times bestselling author of The Memory Palace Susannah Cahalan is a reporter on the New York Post, and the recipient of the 2010 Silurian Award of Excellence in Journalism for Feature Writing. Her writing has also appeared in the New York Times, and is frequently picked up by the Daily Mail, Gawker, Gothamist, AOL and Yahoo among other news aggregrator sites.

Book Delusions of Everyday Life

Download or read book Delusions of Everyday Life written by Leonard Shengold and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all more primitive and irrational than we care to acknowledge, says Dr. Leonard Shengold in this profound and eloquent book. We all suffer to some degree from delusions--vestiges of infantile mental functioning that continue into adult life and that at times of crisis manifest themselves in narcissistic thoughts of omnipotence, immortality, or perfection. Dr. Shengold argues that we can never eliminate these delusions of everyday life, but we can lessen their effect if we acknowledge, or "own", them. He asserts that insight into what we are and what has happened to us is a prerequisite for caring about others and for accepting the transient conditions of life--both necessary to attain happiness. Dr. Shengold discusses delusions we all experience as well as delusions associated with paranoia, perversions, being in love, and identification with delusional parents. He illustrates his ideas by referring to the lives and works of such literary figures as Shakespeare, Swift, Tolstoy, Pascal, Rilke, Randall Jarrell, Dickens, Hardy, and, especially, Samuel Butler. Dr. Shengold also brings in relevant clinical material because, as he points out, delusions of everyday life are at the heart of misunderstanding and conflict in life and of resistance to change in psychological treatment. These delusions must be attenuated if therapy is to be successful.

Download or read book Paving the Great Way written by Jonathan Gold and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu (fourthÐfifth century C.E.) is known for his critical contribution to Buddhist Abhidharma thought, his turn to the Mahayana tradition, and his concise, influential Yogacara-Vij–anavada texts. Paving the Great Way reveals another dimension of his legacy: his integration of several seemingly incompatible intellectual and scriptural traditions, with far-ranging consequences for the development of Buddhist epistemology and the theorization of tantra. Most scholars read VasubandhuÕs texts in isolation and separate his intellectual development into distinct phases. Featuring close studies of VasubandhuÕs Abhidharmakosabhasya, Vyakhyayukti, Vimsatika, and Trisvabhavanirdesa, among other works, this book identifies recurrent treatments of causality and scriptural interpretation that unify distinct strands of thought under a single, coherent Buddhist philosophy. In VasubandhuÕs hands, the BuddhaÕs rejection of the self as a false construction provides a framework through which to clarify problematic philosophical issues, such as the nature of moral agency and subjectivity under a broadly causal worldview. Recognizing this continuity of purpose across VasubandhuÕs diverse corpus recasts the interests of the philosopher and his truly innovative vision, which influenced Buddhist thought for a millennium and continues to resonate with todayÕs philosophical issues. An appendix includes extensive English-language translations of the major texts discussed.

Book What the Hell Did I Just Read

Download or read book What the Hell Did I Just Read written by David Wong and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the story "They" don't want you to read. Though, to be fair, "They" are probably right about this one. To quote the Bible, "Learning the truth can be like loosening a necktie, only to realize it was the only thing keeping your head attached." No, don't put the book back on the shelf -- it is now your duty to purchase it to prevent others from reading it. Yes, it works with e-books, too, I don't have time to explain how. While investigating a fairly straightforward case of a shape-shifting interdimensional child predator, Dave, John and Amy realized there might actually be something weird going on. Together, they navigate a diabolically convoluted maze of illusions, lies, and their own incompetence in an attempt to uncover a terrible truth they -- like you -- would be better off not knowing. Your first impulse will be to think that a story this gruesome -- and, to be frank, stupid -- cannot possibly be true. That is precisely the reaction "They" are hoping for. John Dies at the End's "smart take on fear manages to tap into readers' existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next" (Publishers Weekly) and This Book is Full of Spiders was "unlike any other book of the genre" (Washington Post). Now, New York Times bestselling author David Wong is back with What the Hell Did I Just Read, the third installment of this black-humored thriller series.
