Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century, Ho Chi Minh was founder of the Indochina Communist Party and its successor, the Viet-Minh, and was president from 1945 to 1969 of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). In exploring the life and career of Ho Chi Minh, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam provides a window into traditions and culture that influenced the American war in Vietnam, while highlighting the importance of nationalism in determining the war's outcome. As depicted by Halberstam, Ho is first and foremost a nationalist and a patriot. He was also, according to the author, a pragmatist "who was able to turn the abstract into the practical and to embody the concept of revolution to his own people." This edition includes a new preface by the author.

Maybelline is a multifaceted narrator whose drive to right wrongs and stand up to injustice deserves applause. Ho illuminates both activism and mental health in marginalized communities, showing that even a bright, young achiever can experience depression without anyone knowing.”—Booklist "A powerful, hopeful YA debut. May’s journey through personal and familial grief is poignant and questions of power and privilege are explored with nuance that will spark conversation among teen readers." —School Library Journal “This sensitive novel does an impressive balancing act, examining mental illness and its stigma among Asian Americans while weaving in themes of racism and grief. The overarching messages—listening with empathy, and seeking help—ring loud and clear.” —Horn Book Joanna Ho, New York Times bestselling author of Eyes That Kiss in the Corners, has written an exquisite, heart-rending debut young adult novel that will inspire all to speak truth to power. Maybelline Chen isn’t the Chinese Taiwanese American daughter her mother expects her to be. May prefers hoodies over dresses and wants to become a writer. When asked, her mom can’t come up with one specific reason for why she's proud of her only daughter. May’s beloved brother, Danny, on the other hand, has just been admitted to Princeton. But Danny secretly struggles with depression, and when he dies by suicide, May's world is shattered. In the aftermath, racist accusations are hurled against May's parents for putting too much “pressure” on him. May’s father tells her to keep her head down. Instead, May challenges these ugly stereotypes through her writing. Yet the consequences of speaking out run much deeper than anyone could foresee. Who gets to tell our stories, and who gets silenced? It’s up to May to take back the narrative. Joanna Ho masterfully explores timely themes of mental health, racism, and classism. A poignant call to action.” —Randy Ribay, National Book Award finalist for Patron Saints of Nothing

Book Sir Robert Ho Tung

    Book Details:
  • Author : May Holdsworth
  • Publisher : Hong Kong University Press
  • Release : 2022-05-03
  • ISBN : 9888754246
  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book Sir Robert Ho Tung written by May Holdsworth and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Robert Ho Tung (1862–1954) is a compelling figure in Hong Kong history. He is regularly portrayed as the colony’s greatest philanthropist and wealthiest man of his day, the first Chinese to live on the Peak, and, at the end of his life, the ‘Grand Old Man of Hongkong’. The illegitimate son of a Chinese mother and European father, he was highly sensitive about his mixed heritage though he consistently made the most of his fate. He was a man perfectly in tune with his place and time, his success driven as much by his entrepreneurial talents as by his being Eurasian. This book shows him in all his immense variety—clerk with the Imperial Maritime Customs, chief compradore of Jardine Matheson, financial wizard, husband and lover, patriarch of a large family of five sons and eight daughters, loyal British subject but also, paradoxically, Chinese patriot. China’s president Yuan Shikai awarded him the Order of the Excellent Crop, and King George V knighted him. May Holdsworth’s thoughtful and deftly written account of the life is the first full-length biography in English. Given unique and unprecedented access to family and personal papers, including letters, diaries, notes, and photographs, she offers a nuanced perspective on a public but also private man. Her book will be a rich resource for historians and general readers interested in the men and women who played a key part in the shaping of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Hong Kong. ‘With painstaking research using an invaluable cache of private letters, family photographs, and other rarely seen archival materials, May Holdsworth has produced a definitive English-language biography of Hong Kong’s Grand Old Man, Sir Robert Ho Tung, as both public figure and private man. A must-read for anyone interested in Hong Kong history.’ —Emma J. Teng, Massachusetts Institute of Technology ‘This biography of Sir Robert Ho Tung is well written, well organized, and based on original unpublished documentary sources that have not been previously utilized. Though of a scholarly nature, it is eminently readable and should appeal to a broad readership, including lovers of Hong Kong history.’ —Edward J. M. Rhoads, University of Texas at Austin

Book Conversations With Dr Reimar Horten and His All Wing Designs Ho 1 to Ho 229 Part 2

Download or read book Conversations With Dr Reimar Horten and His All Wing Designs Ho 1 to Ho 229 Part 2 written by David Myhra PhD and published by RCW Technology & Ebook Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February of 1982, I flew to Buenos Aires then on to Cordoba, Argentina to meet with Dr Reimar Horten, (1915-1994) the designer of a series of sail and powered all wing flying machines. He lived in retirement on a ranch 15 to 20 miles from the small town of Villa General Belgrano. After an over night flight from Miami,Florida I arrived at the Cordoba. Reimar Horten, with a full head of white hair, met me and we drove off to his ranch in a white Ford pickup truck. Reimar had total recall. I have met only two such people in my life. We spoke only in English and our conversations were recorded on cassette tapes...which several years later I donated to the National Air & Space Museum library. After several days of speaking only English, Reimar was speaking English to everyone, his wife, helpers on his ranch, shop keepers in Villa General Belgano, and families he'd meet walking on the road into town when he offered them a ride in the back of his truck. Few English-speaking people ever visited this remote area of Argentina at the foot hills of Andes Mountains. His wife, Gisela ,frequently had to remind her husband that all these Argentines had no idea of what he was saying to them so please speak Spanish. I lived at the Horten ranch for one month recording my conversation with Reimar Horten. I returned the following year (1983) for another month. Our two month conversation resulted in 86 two hour taped cassettes. The material presented in this volume (a second volume contains conversations with Walter Horten over numerous visits to his home in Baden Baden, West Germany) has been used in my five copyrighted books on the Horten Brothers. I thank them immensely and now the world hears their voice, their personal struggles, failures, as well as their successes in seeking to perfect the performances of the all-wing aircraft.

Book My Saigon The Local Guide to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Download or read book My Saigon The Local Guide to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam written by Elly Thuy Nguyen and published by Elly Thuy Nguyen. This book was released on 2024-01-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience real Saigon: My Saigon 2024 Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) offers bustling streets, amazing walks, too-hip-for-you cafes, rocking music clubs, luxurious salons, explosively delicious restaurants, and indoor cat zoos. Saigon is Vietnam. It’s young, practical, crowded, and a little bit brash. Most visitors to Saigon see the same boring “attractions”: boring restaurants, tourist-trap markets, and War propaganda. Saigon has so much more to experience than tourists see. My Saigon gives you the insider track: the most amazing experiences, the cultural backstories, the practical go-to tips, the best coffee, the best food (far beyond pho and banh mi), the best hangouts, the coolest stuff, and hipsters, hipsters everywhere. Details about 90-day and multi-entry electronic visas to Vietnam (new as of August, 2023). Big-picture navigation. History your tour guides aren't allowed to mention. Good hotels for cheap, without hostels, bedbugs, and weird smells. Get mobile data up and running without being scammed. The best pho in Saigon: no, it's not the one in the backpacker district. Awesome, authentic, cheap restaurants where my friends and I eat -- and Tripadvisor has no clue about. Coffee. Did someone say coffee? 1930s coffee, street coffee, "specialty" coffee, all kinds of coffee: I'll tell you where. Hang out with Vietnamese people, munch on dried squid, listen to Viet Pop (if you dare). Make cool friends, date guys or girls, whatever flag you might fly. Bust out with Saigonese slang to make your new friends laugh. Watch out for Saigon's mafia: they run the streets, and they don't announce themselves. Don't unintentionally offend people by wearing a popular tourist souvenir t-shirt. You definitely shouldn't give money to beggars and street kids. Avoiding taxi scams in Saigon is so easy, but most tourists refuse to learn. My Saigon is a guide, a love confessional, an instruction manual, and an ode to the city.
