Book Religion and the Specter of the West

Download or read book Religion and the Specter of the West written by Arvind-Pal S. Mandair and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that intellectual movements, such as deconstruction, postsecular theory, and political theology, have different implications for cultures and societies that live with the debilitating effects of past imperialisms, Arvind Mandair unsettles the politics of knowledge construction in which the category of "religion" continues to be central. Through a case study of Sikhism, he launches an extended critique of religion as a cultural universal. At the same time, he presents a portrait of how certain aspects of Sikh tradition were reinvented as "religion" during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. India's imperial elite subtly recast Sikh tradition as a sui generis religion, which robbed its teachings of their political force. In turn, Sikhs began to define themselves as a "nation" and a "world religion" that was separate from, but parallel to, the rise of the Indian state and global Hinduism. Rather than investigate these processes in isolation from Europe, Mandair shifts the focus closer to the political history of ideas, thereby recovering part of Europe's repressed colonial memory. Mandair rethinks the intersection of religion and the secular in discourses such as history of religions, postcolonial theory, and recent continental philosophy. Though seemingly unconnected, these discourses are shown to be linked to a philosophy of "generalized translation" that emerged as a key conceptual matrix in the colonial encounter between India and the West. In this riveting study, Mandair demonstrates how this philosophy of translation continues to influence the repetitions of religion and identity politics in the lives of South Asians, and the way the academy, state, and media have analyzed such phenomena.

Download or read book Drug Abuse written by Punit Puri and published by Educreation Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's youth face many risks, including drug abuse, violence, and HIV/AIDS. Responding to these risks before they become problems can be difficult. One of the goals of writing this book is to help the public understand the causes of drug abuse and to prevent its onset. Drug abuse has serious consequences in our homes, schools, and communities. From this book’s perspective, the use of all illicit drugs and the inappropriate use of illicit drugs are considered drug abuse. Prevention science has made great progress in recent years. Many interventions are being tested in "real-world" settings, so they can be more easily adapted for community use. Scientists are studying a broader range of populations and topics. They have identified, for example, effective interventions with younger populations to help prevent risk behaviors before drug abuse occurs. Researchers are also studying older teens, which are already using drugs to find ways to prevent further abuse or addiction. Practical issues, such as cost-benefitanalyses, are being studied. Presenting these findings to the public through this book is the most important responsibilities. I am pleased to offer this First edition of the publication, DRUG ABUSE - PROBLEM MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION First Edition. The first edition offers updated principles, new questions and answers, new program information, and expanded references. This edition summarizes sections of the guide for community use. This book is designed as per the latest syllabus of Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. I hope you will find this First edition useful and helpful. Prof. Punit [email protected]

Book Oilseed Cake for Nematode Management

Download or read book Oilseed Cake for Nematode Management written by Faheem Ahmad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) devastate many crop plants, causing billions of dollars in agricultural losses each year. Effective management methods to combat PPNs are synthetic nematicides, but most are non-specific and notoriously toxic and threaten the soil ecosystem, groundwater and human health. The plant by-products, such as oilseed cakes, are sources of bioactive compounds with nematicidal potential. Oilseed cakes are an excellent organic fertilizer, and their bioactive compounds are now gaining importance as they are safe for the environment. This book provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date review of research on the use of oilseed cakes against PPNs. The complete knowledge of better uses of oilseed cakes for nematode management is necessary for developing effective nematode control options to reduce yield loss. Key features: • Describes plant by-products such as oilseed cakes and their potential applications • Explores bioactive compounds from oilseed cakes for agricultural biofertilization and nematicidal activity • Discusses nematode management in vegetable, fruit and legume crops • Covers the use of oilseed cakes and management of the associated challenges This volume is designed and edited to serve as an invaluable resource text for readers associated with plant nematology, plant pathology, plant protection and agricultural science, including researchers, teachers, advanced undergraduates and graduate students and even agricultural extension agents and farmers.

Book Brassinosteroids in Plant Developmental Biology and Stress Tolerance

Download or read book Brassinosteroids in Plant Developmental Biology and Stress Tolerance written by Jing Quan Yu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brassinosteroids in Plant Developmental Biology and Stress Tolerance presents the mechanisms of brassinosteroid-regulated plant developmental biology and stress tolerance that cover various biochemical, physiological, genetic and molecular studies. As unprecedented climate change threatens global food security, studies reveal that BRs could not only protect plants from stresses to ensure food security, but also reduce toxic compounds in edible plant parts. As the utilization of BRs in modern agriculture is of great significance in the context of global climate change, this book presents key information on how to develop eco-friendly growth regulators and understand the importance of brassinosteroids in safe food production. Presents the multifaceted roles of brassinosteroids as phytohormones in plant growth, development and response to biotic and/or abiotic stresses Unveils the physiological and molecular mechanisms controlling plant stress response to biotic and abiotic stress Discusses developmental processes relating to environmental adaptations that are mediated by brassinosteroids Brings together recent works of experts studying brassinosteroid crosstalk with other signals, including hormones, sugars, redox and light signals
