This study will benefit policy makers, as they will develop, change and improve strategies for effective counseling and advisory services in higher education. The study adopted the descriptive research method and the research questions were adequately answered with a simple percentage. A total of 200 students from the faculty of Education, University of Uyo were enrolled in this study. Young people are constantly plagued by personal, academic, or family influences. Sometimes these influences are positive, while other times the influences are negative. The consequences of negative influences are the strange decisions that young people make to avoid a growth process without problems for them. Counseling and counseling services in universities should help young people overcome these challenges, mainly in an academic environment, regardless of how they look. However, access to counseling and guidance services in the university is one of the services young people do not often use for logical and illogical reasons.

Book excerpt: Individuals' attitudes toward seeking psychological help play a major role in determining their actual help-seeking behavior. Among college student populations, research has focused on psychological help-seeking attitudes in an effort to understand the characteristics of college students who do and do not seek psychological treatment. These help-seeking attitudes have been found to be related to a variety of demographic and psychological variables. The present study investigated the extent to which differences in psychological help-seeking attitudes exist as a function of one particular demographic variable, field of study, in a university graduate student sample. Students in the social sciences were found to have significantly more positive help-seeking attitudes than students in both natural science and applied fields. Clinical Psychology students held the most positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help. These results may be of particular interest to college counseling center staff who wish to maximize the likelihood that students in need of psychological services actually seek treatment. Specific implications for counseling centers are discussed.

However, research examining the attitudes towards seeking mental health services and the effect such perceptions have on the propensity of public use is in its prime. Such knowledge is necessary for the benefit of the consumer as well as concerned mental health professional organizations. Furthermore, the ability to discriminate consumer perception based on the professional identity of the mental health service provider will serve as a benchmark for a young profession- counseling- to understand its current status in the minds of the general public, in comparison to related mental health professions, and for counseling professional organizations to better allocate resources aimed at professional advocacy efforts. As potential consumers of mental health services, it is of great merit to understand college students' perceptions of mental health professionals' therapeutic competence, and their attitudes towards seeking services based on the identity of the mental health service provider; i.e. counselor, psychologist, or social worker. This study provided an overview of - three helping professions: counseling, psychology, and social work. Additionally, it expanded upon the circumstances surrounding the origination of each discipline and their governing bodies, current vocational opportunities and average salaries for members of each discipline, the rationale for conducting this study and the psychometric properties of the instrument- the Inventory of Attitudes toward Seeking Mental Health Services (IASMHS)- utilized by this study. The primary hypothesis which suggested a significant difference in student perception of the mental health professional's level of competence with respect to the identity of the professional was tested. Additionally, student attitudes towards seeking mental health services were measured and a comparison on the basis of the identity of the helper was drawn. The research was unable to find statistical significance regarding the previously posed hypotheses. However, a significant difference was noted between the sexes and their propensity to seek mental health services such that the females in this sample were more likely to seek mental health services than were the male participants. Furthermore, a statistically significant and moderate relationship existed between the number of courses taken in a helping discipline and participants' attitudes towards seeking professional mental health services such that as the number of courses completed increased, so did the positive manner in which participants viewed seeking mental health services. The researcher concluded the study by addressing its limitations and discussing future suggestions for researchers.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to create and test an intervention designed to increase students0́9 positive attitudes toward utilizing mental health services. A review of the literature was conducted to establish the guidelines for creating an intervention that would effectively influence attitudes while being relatively easy to customize and adapt to different settings. The content of the intervention was informed by the literature, reviewed by a panel of experts, and tested with a focus group of students before being finalized. In order to test the effectiveness of the intervention, and experimental study was designed which included an experimental and control group. The control group had the same experience as the experimental group except for the content of the intervention. The control group intervention provided general health information related to topics such as diet and exercise. Student underutilization of counseling services on college campuses is a well- recognized phenomenon. By improving student attitudes toward seeking counseling, it is hypothesized that more students who could benefit from such services would indeed seek them out. This is particularly important as the rates of suicide and serious mental illness on college campuses has increased over the years. Students who receive appropriate treatment for mental health concerns often experience significant improvement. Those students whose mental health is improved may perform better academically than those who remain untreated. Healthier students have the opportunity to be more productive and successful members of the campus community. The intervention was designed to be low cost so that it could be updated and tailored for different institutions. It was also created to be disseminated over the internet to reduce obstacles for students who may wish to view it. The intervention included music, narration, pictures, and animated text to capture the attention of the viewer. The production was accomplished using low-cost software that does not require expert skills to operate. The intervention showed significant effects on the first two subscales of the attitude measure (i.e., psychological openness and help-seeking propensity), but did not show statistical significance on the third (i.e., indifference to stigma) or on the intent to seek counseling measure (ISCI). Future studies could explore improvements to the current intervention and could examine the effects of the intervention over time (i.e., longitudinal design).

Book excerpt: Research has shown that although many college students experience depression, most do not seek professional help from available mental health services. The current study uses the Theory of Planned Behavior (Azjen, 1988; 1991) as a model for changing attitudes toward seeking mental health help as well as increasing mental health counseling usage. The Theory of Planned Behavior posits that the best predictor of behavior is one's intention to do that behavior, which is in turn predicted by personal attitudes toward that behavior, what important others think of that behavior, and one's perceived self-efficacy to perform that behavior. For the current study, college students were asked to complete a short online questionnaire that included questions on attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services, depression, culture, and demographic information. After a week, participants were randomly assigned to either a control or experimental condition. Participants in the experimental condition watched a short film on going to the counseling center that was based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Participants in the control condition watched a short film on an unrelated topic. After the film, all participants completed a questionnaire regarding attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services and depression. After four weeks, participants were asked to complete a follow-up survey online about attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services and depression. Results from the current study do not support the use of the Theory of Planned Behavior as a model for predicting professional mental health service seeking. The intervention was found to be effective in changing attitudes, but was unsuccessful in changing behavior. Implications and suggestions for improving interventions that seek to increase professional mental health services utilization are provided in the discussion.
