This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report providing a subjective assessment of the scope, applicability, and overall reliability of existing published references related to natural regeneration of white, Engelmann, and black spruce in North America and a synopsis of references on the subject. The references are listed alphabetically by author for each of 563 references, based on a dBASE IV database coded according to 105 keywords. The database allows the user to search geographically, by species of spruce, by forest section within Canada, or by any of the keywords listed. The emphasis is on white spruce in a boreal mixedwood setting but also includes information on natural regeneration of Engelmann spruce and upland black spruce, plus a limited amount of Norway spruce. Most of the references are from the 1990s.

Book Restoration of Boreal and Temperate Forests

Download or read book Restoration of Boreal and Temperate Forests written by John A. Stanturf and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-12-28 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the commitment to protect and restore forest ecosystems has become a policy goal in many countries since the Rio Conference, there is still no general consensus on what constitutes restoration. This authoritative reference presents the best practices for fostering increased sustainability, enhancing biodiversity, and repairing ecosystem func

Book Continuous Cover Forestry

Download or read book Continuous Cover Forestry written by Timo Pukkala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.

Book Norway Spruce Conversion Options and Consequences

Download or read book Norway Spruce Conversion Options and Consequences written by Heinrich Spiecker and published by European Forest Institute Rese. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to the end of the 19th century, many European forests suffered from devastation and soil deterioration, which caused fears of timber shortage. In order to counteract this possible shortage, many forest areas were reforested with coniferous tree species, especially Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst). Consequently, coniferous forests (often Norway spruce forests), consisting of trees of the same age, were established on many sites naturally dominated by broadleaves. As a result, damages caused by storm, snow, ice, drought, insects, fungi and possibly soil degradation seemed to occur more frequently in these secondary Norway spruce forests than in forests consisting of species better adapted to the ambient conditions. Conversion of Norway spruce stands may reduce these risks and upgrade biodiversity and the genetic potential of forests. As the economic results of forestry, future wood markets and various other goods and services that are provided to society by forest ecosystems, are affected by present and future decision-making, all aspects of conversion must be well understood. EFI's Regional Project Centre, CONFOREST, is continuously striving to improve implementation of conversion projects by consolidation of the expertise available in all forestry disciplines. This book comprises the findings in all conversion-related areas aiming to consider ecosystem needs while ensuring availability of silvicultural methods and operational feasibility of their implementation. Simultaneously, the cost-effectiveness of conversion scenarios is analysed by forestry economists. Since a change in public perception and ecological awareness may cause policy makers to either or not endorse further conversion efforts, input by experts in forestry politics is also provided.

Book Natural Regeneration of Subalpine Fir and Engelmann Spruce in Partially Harvested High elevation Stands in East central British Columbia

Download or read book Natural Regeneration of Subalpine Fir and Engelmann Spruce in Partially Harvested High elevation Stands in East central British Columbia written by O. A. Steen and published by British Columbia Forest Science Program. This book was released on 2008 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines factors affecting natural restocking of small openings created by partial harvesting of high elevation (> 1500 m) Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm.)-subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa [Hook.] Nutt.) stands in east-central British Columbia, Canada. We examined the effects of opening size (0.03, 0.13, and 1.0 ha), seedbed, and seed supply on density of post-logging regeneration for 10 years post-harvest. The effect of opening size on growth release of advance regeneration was also examined. Both seed production and seedbed limited densities of post-logging seedlings. Densities of subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce post-logging regeneration remained low at two sites where seedfall was low. Seedbed scarification significantly increased seedling densities where seed rain was high. In the absence of scarification, abundant seed production had little effect on post-logging seedling densities. Increased height and basal diameter growth of advance regeneration following logging was greater on 1.0-ha than 0.13-ha and 0.03-ha openings. This study demonstrates that post-logging natural regeneration in combination with advance regeneration can restock small openings in partially harvested stands where there is an adequate distribution of mineral soil seedbed and logging or site preparation coincide with or shortly precede a year of abundant seed production.

Book Clearcutting and Its Alternatives for Upland Black Spruce

Download or read book Clearcutting and Its Alternatives for Upland Black Spruce written by Ontario. Northwest Science & Technology and published by Thunder Bay, Ont. : Northwest Science & Technology. This book was released on 1998 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begins with a literature review on the habitat, reproduction, seedbed requirements, and growth of black spruce, and continues with an overview of black spruce silvicultural systems for Ontario upland sites. Research needs and management considerations are then outlined. Concludes with reports on two case studies of black spruce silviculture at the Leo Vidlak Demonstration Forest near Raith, Ontario. The first study involved two-stage harvesting as an alternative to clear-cutting, and the second explored natural regeneration in stands without advance growth.
