Book Growth and Characterization of Lead Zirconate Titanate PbZr1 xTixO3 Based Novel Piezo Ferroelectric Single Crystals

Download or read book Growth and Characterization of Lead Zirconate Titanate PbZr1 xTixO3 Based Novel Piezo Ferroelectric Single Crystals written by Bixia Wang and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piezo-/ferroelectric materials form an important class of functional materials that can transduce mechanical energy to electrical energy and vice versa. PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT) ceramics are the most extensively used piezoelectric materials owing to their good piezoelectric and electromechanical properties near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). However, the microstructures of this class of materials and the atomistic phenomena that cause the outstanding performance have not been thoroughly understood yet. Therefore, it is of particular interest to grow single crystals of PZT, which are not only necessary for thorough characterization of the anisotropic properties of this system, but also are expected to exhibit superior piezo-/ferroelectric performance over their ceramic counterparts. In this work, PZT single crystals with compositions of x = 0.54 and 0.45 were grown successfully by a top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy (PLM), piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), and dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric measurements. On the other hand, given that PZT ceramics used in industry are always chemically modified to obtain desired and enhanced properties for specific applications, we extended our work to grow donor (La3+ and Bi3+)- and acceptor (Mg2+ and Mn2+)-doped PZT single crystals and to investigate the effects of the doping on the structure and properties. The compositions and homogeneity of the as-grown doped PZT single crystals were investigated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of these single crystals were investigated. These very first set of data on doped PZT single crystals not only provide a better understanding of structure-property relationship of PZT-based single crystals and their doping mechanisms, but also points to the possible applications of doped PZT single crystals as a new high-TC, high-performance piezo-/ferroelectric material. Moreover, there have been pressing demands for lead-free or lead-reduced replacement materials because of the environment concerns arising from the potential toxicity of the lead in high-performance piezo-/ferroelectric material such as PZT. In our search for high-temperature, lead-reduced piezoelectric materials, novel ferroelectric single crystals of complex perovskite ternary solid solution Bi(Zn0.5Ti0.5)O3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 (BZT-PZ-PT) have been grown for the first time. The structure and properties of these crytals suggest that the BZT-PZ-PT ternary single crystals constitute a new family of high-TC ferroelectric materials, which are promising for various applications such as high-power electromechanical transducers that can operate in a wide temperature range.

Book Resource for Piezoelectric Single Crystals

Download or read book Resource for Piezoelectric Single Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents work performed over the period of April 1, 1998-July 1, 2001 under the ONR/DARPA program titled 'Resource for Piezoelectric Single Crystals', contract no. N00014-98-1-0527. The program encompasses novel piezoelectric materials, characterization, and domain studies, innovative growth technique and device engineering, the latter including MEMS and electro-optics. Research on this program is represented in the technical appendices. The program was on domain/crystallographic engineering of Relaxor-PT single crystals, e.g., Pb(Zn(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3-PbTiO3 and Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3-PbTiO3. From this program, it was confirmed that in single crystal form, Relaxor-PT materials offer significant piezoelectric performance with coupling coefficients greater than 90% and strains exceeding 1%. In Characterization, the complete set of dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic coefficients were determined for 100 domain engineering rhombohedral PZN-4.5%PT, PZN-8%PT, and PMN-33%PT crystals. For all the systems characterized, coupling coefficients (k33> 90%) with piezoelectric strain coefficients (d33> 2000 pC/N) were found. The concept of cryogenic poling was utilized to reduce property variation among crystals relatively close to the morphotropic phase boundary, due to rhombohedral-tetragonal transformations. Domain studies revealed the complexity of the crystals in terms of the macrosymmetry being orthorhombic mm2 or lower than the assumed 4mm. The possibility of a monoclinic phase was suggested to aid in the understanding of the complex domain configuration of underlying high piezoelectric activity. In addition to high temperature flux and Bridgman growth technique, Laser Heating Pedestal Growth crystal of non-lead Zr modified BaTiO3 and PMN-PT were successfully grown with rates> 0.3 mm/min. The concept of domain engineering was demonstrated on non-PbO ferroelectrics with enhanced levels of piezoelectric activity confirmed.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Lead free Perovskite Solid Solutions

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Lead free Perovskite Solid Solutions written by Jenny Yeuw Yeen Wong and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piezo-/ferroelectrics form an important class of functional materials that can transduce mechanical energy to electrical energy and vice versa. They have large impacts in medicine (ultrasound imaging), in naval exploration/defence (sonar) and in consumer products (random access memories, capacitors). Currently, there is high interest in the development of new lead-free materials due to health and environmental risk factors of high-performance lead-based materials, such as Pb(Zr,Ti)O3. One promising lead-free system is the (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN) solid solution, as it has a high Curie temperature, which allows for a wide operating temperature range for devices. In order to better understand the structure and property relations, single crystals are needed. In this work, single crystals of K0.1Na0.9NbO3 (KNN) and 0.98K0.8Na0.2NbO3 - 0.02LiNbO3 (KNN-LN) have been grown using a high-temperature solution growth method with K2CO3 and B2O3 as flux. Polarized light microscopy was used to study the Na-rich KNN crystals, and the phase diagram on the Na-rich end of the (1-x)KNbO3 - xNaNbO3 solid solution has been updated. With the intention of addressing the issue of composition segregation, a modified vapour transport equilibration technique has been developed and demonstrated to be a viable approach to increase the Li-content in the KNN-LN crystals. In addition, a new ternary solid solution of y(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 - (1-y)[(1-x)Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 - xBaTiO3] has been synthesized in the form of ceramics with compositions of y = 0.96 to y = 0.98 and its partial phase diagram has been established. Aside from KNN-based materials, translucent ceramics of (1-x)(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 - xAgNbO3 (NBT-AN) and (1-x)(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 - xAgTaO3 (NBT-AT) have been successfully prepared via a solid state method under ambient pressure. The dielectric permittivity as a function of temperature is found to be constant for compositions of x > 0.12 (e.g. its variation is within ±10 % for both NBT-AN and NBT-AT (x = 0.16) between 0 °C and 350 °C), while the polarization versus electric field relation shows pure capacitive behaviour up to 250 °C. With these properties, NBT-AN and NBT-AT are promising candidates for electro-optics and/or high-temperature capacitors.
