This problem has been a central concern of the authors and their colleagues over the past two decades. They have wisely (to my mind) realized that any viable solution must be informed by a deep understanding of both the structural properties of alternative formalisms and the cognitive demands that they impose on decision makers. Considering the two in parallel reduces the risk of forcing decision makers to say things and endorse models that they do not really understand. It opens the door for creative solutions, incorporating insights from both decision theory and cognitive psychology. It is this opportunity that the authors have so ably exploited in this important book. Under the pressures of an interview situation, people will often answer a question that is put to them. Thus the understanding of human behaviour becomes more and more important. Furthermore the behavioural aspect of the decision making process plays a big role, as everyone of us would face resource allocation situations or portfolio decisions and people always do not make optimal decisions as mathematical models would do, but rather a completely another way often based on heuristics. Therefore it is interesting to investigate how people tackle such decision making situations intuitively and which cognitive strategies they follow thereby. This work aims to give a detailed overview about the relating literatures at first. Then decision making processes in portfolio decision situations are experimentally investigated regarding to behavioural aspects, in this case concerning knapsack problems, with the application of the methodology verbal protocol analysis. Concrete heuristics which subjects were following during the decision process could be identified and classified under the terms of certain criterions for further analysis. Hereby verbal protocol analysis helped to collect good and applicable data for determining specific behaviour of people in portfolio decision processes.

Thus the author is deliberately expanding this discussion beyond the realm of merely aggregating opinions. There are a number of reasons for doing so. There may well be situations involving groups of individuals wherein the real goal is merely that of combining degrees of belief concerning statements (hypotheses) about the world. However, opinions in the usual sense of that word would generally incorporate preferences as well. There is even some reason to doubt that degrees of beliefs and preferences (utilizes) can be separately elicited even in a normative setting (Dr. H. Rubin, personal communication). In short, there is some doubt as to whether the aggregation of degrees of belief is a meaningful undertaking. In any case, it would seem that in a significant number if not the majority of situations involving groups of individuals, a joint decision is called for. This joint decision could itself be an aggregate of the individual expressions of degrees of belief. But this recasts the problem into the context of group decision making and redirects our interest towards this latter area.
