A strong historical consciousness is mixed with different examples of violence and dispossession as well as an awareness of subconscious associations so that the political and the surreal intermingle - the brutalities of war and exploitation are softened by the tenderness of love. Stylistically inventive, it explores new forms while striving for an overall musicality.

Book excerpt: From Soweto, from the hilltops of initiation, Siphiwe ka Ngwenya adopts the mantle of Killjoy, dissecting our liberation, questioning our infatuations, baptizing us in the juicy waters of procreation. "Dance, Africa!" he cries, before hitting Hillbrow pavements parading brothels, singing for children whose anger and haste cannot be measured or bulldozed, singing for workers who brave themselves from darkness to darkness while the drumbeat serenades and bass strums compassionate, and then stroking the morning dew, turning poverty into fiction, cuddling loneliness, nakedness entangling with passion while commanding us to rise! to celebrate!

Book Soweto

Download or read book Soweto written by Jodi Bieber and published by Jacana Media. This book was released on 2010 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Acclaimed home-grown photographer, Jodi Bieber has created an open-ended essay which is a celebration and a portrait of life in Soweto today. The importance of Soweto in the collective consciousness is hard to overstate. It registers as a place born of resistance, perhaps even embodying the South African struggle for freedom. But the birth of Kwaito is attributed to Soweto too. And beyond the grand narratives, there is and always was a proliferation of dancing, art and fashion in this place defined by its energy and cosmopolitan nature. Labelling and un-labelling, claiming and discarding, Sowetans have created Soweto anew - a phenomenon that is celebrated in this photographic publication which contemplates daily lived realities where here, as elsewhere, South Africans are continually reinventing themselves and their urban space."--Publisher's website.

Book Malikhanye

  • Author : Mxolisi Nyezwa
  • Publisher : Deep South Pub
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9780958491594
  • Pages : 66 pages

Download or read book Malikhanye written by Mxolisi Nyezwa and published by Deep South Pub. This book was released on 2011 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mxolisi Nyezwa's poems are both violent and tender, with an immediacy of language that strikes the reader like a cry, or a note of music. Malikhanye is his third book of poems after Song Trials (2000) and New Country (2008). The book's title comes from the extended lyrical sequence following the death of his infant son Malikhanye, a poem of astonishing humility and beauty. With what has been described as the softest of voices, poet Mxolisi Nyezwa created one of the biggest stirs at the 2008 Poetry Africa festival in Durban, where Nyezwa launched his second collection, a volume called New Country. His readings drew enthusiastic acclaim - and great curiosity from those unfamiliar with his work. Ben Williams, editor, book.co.za October 2008 As with the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Mxolisi Nyezwa's poems register a chilling, physical response before the mind can fully apprehend their meaning. Rather than lull the reader with pretty lyricism, Nyezwa's work strives for transcendence suffused with pain, driving the arrow-tip of searching ever on. Kobus Moolman, writing about New Country Nyezwa characteristically works through an associative poetry, juxtaposing macro- and microcosm, the familiar and the surreal, the local and the universal; often jumping between the five senses [...] This collection extends and invigorates the concerns of the South African lyric in new and breathtaking directions, and I do not believe that tired old genre will ever be the same again. There are poems here as near perfect as anything to be found in the history of our poetry... Kelwyn Sole, reviewing Nyezwa's first collection Song Trials, Mail & Guardian June 2000 Nyezwa grew up in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, where he still lives. He runs a shop and business support service from a steel container in Motherwell township. He is founder and editor of the cultural magazine Kotaz, now in its 14th year.

Book Poetics and Precarity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Myung Mi Kim
  • Publisher : The University at Buffalo Robert Creeley Lectures in Poetry and Poetics

  • ISBN : 1438470002
  • Pages : 250 pages

This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when wars, acts of terrorism, and ecological degradation have intensified and isolationism, misogyny, and ethnic divisiveness have been given distinctively more powerful voice in public discourse, language itself often seems to have failed. The poets and critics in this book argue that language has the potential to address this increasing level of discord and precarity, and they negotiate ways to understand poetics, or the role of the poetic, in relation to language, the body politic, the human body, breath, the bodies of the natural environment, and the body of form. Poetry makes urgent issues audible and poetics helps to theorize those issues into critical consciousness. Poetry also functions as a cry to protest late capitalist imperialism, misogyny, racism, climate change, and all the debilitating conditions of everyday life. Hubs of concern merge and diverge; precarity takes differently gendered, historied, embodied, geopolitical manifestations. The contributors articulate a poetics that renders what has not yet been crystallized as discourse into fields of force. They also acknowledge the beauties of sound, poetry, and music, and celebrate the power of community, marking the surge of energy that can occur at a particular place at a particular moment. Ultimately, Poetics and Precarity fosters further conversations that will imagine the concerns of poetics as a continuously emerging field.
