Book Return to Greatness

Download or read book Return to Greatness written by Alan Wolfe and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has America, in its quest for goodness, sacrificed its sense of greatness? In this sharp-witted, historically informed book, veteran political observer Alan Wolfe argues that most Americans show greater concern with saving the country's soul than with making the nation great. Wolfe castigates both conservatives and liberals for opting for small-mindedness over greatness. Liberals, who at their best insisted on policies of national solidarity, have convinced themselves that small is beautiful, prefer multiculturalism to one nation, and are mistrustful of executive political power. Conservatives, who once embraced strong, active central government and an ideal of national citizenship, now support huge tax cuts that undermine America's future ability to undertake any ambitious, long-term project at home or abroad. No great society, in Wolfe's view, has ever been built on the cheap. Wolfe notes that neither the conservatives' call for small-scale faith-based initiatives nor the recent embrace on the left of a grassroots "civil society" can provide health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans or ensure national security in an age of terrorism. To find better solutions, Wolfe looks back at specific moments in our national experience, when, in the face of sharp resistance, aspirations for the idea of national greatness shaped American history. He demonstrates how a bold and ambitious political agenda, championed at various times by Alexander Hamilton, John Marshall, Abraham Lincoln, and the two Roosevelts, steered the country toward periods of national strength and unity. Steeped in a colorful, panoramic reading of history, Return to Greatness offers a fresh take on American national identity and purpose. A call to action for a renewed embrace of the ideal of an activist federal government and bold policy agendas, it is sure to become a centerpiece of national debate.

Book The End of Greatness

Download or read book The End of Greatness written by Aaron David Miller and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Presidency has always been an implausible—some might even say an impossible—job. Part of the problem is that the challenges of the presidency and the expectations Americans have for their presidents have skyrocketed, while the president's capacity and power to deliver on what ails the nations has diminished. Indeed, as citizens we continue to aspire and hope for greatness in our only nationally elected office. The problem of course is that the demand for great presidents has always exceeded the supply. As a result, Americans are adrift in a kind of Presidential Bermuda Triangle suspended between the great presidents we want and the ones we can no longer have. The End of Greatness explores the concept of greatness in the presidency and the ways in which it has become both essential and detrimental to America and the nation's politics. Miller argues that greatness in presidents is a much overrated virtue. Indeed, greatness is too rare to be relevant in our current politics, and driven as it is by nation-encumbering crisis, too dangerous to be desirable. Our preoccupation with greatness in the presidency consistently inflates our expectations, skews the debate over presidential performance, and drives presidents to misjudge their own times and capacity. And our focus on the individual misses the constraints of both the office and the times, distorting how Presidents actually lead. In wanting and expecting our leaders to be great, we have simply made it impossible for them to be good. The End of Greatness takes a journey through presidential history, helping us understand how greatness in the presidency was achieved, why it's gone, and how we can better come to appreciate the presidents we have, rather than being consumed with the ones we want.

Book A Half century of Greatness

Download or read book A Half century of Greatness written by Frederic Ewen and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Half-Century of Greatness paints a vivid and dramatic picture of the creative thought of mid- to late nineteenth century Europe and the influence of the unsuccessful Revolutions of 1848. It reveals often unexpected links between novelists, poets, and philosophers from England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine-especially Dickens, Carlyle, Mill, the Bront?s, and George Eliot; Hegel, Strauss, Feuerbach, Marx, Engels, Wagner, and several German poets; the Hungarian poet Sndor Petfi; Gogol, Dostoevsky, Bakunin, and Herzen in Russia, and the great Ukrainian poet Shevchenko. The book was reconstructed and edited by Dr. Jeffrey Wollock from Ewen's final manuscript. It includes the author's own reference citations throughout, a reconstructed bibliography, and an updated "further reading" list. This is Ewen's last work, the long-lost companion to his Heroic Imagination. Together, these books present a panorama of the social, political, and artistic aspects of European Romanticism, especially foreshadowing and complementing recent work on the relation of Marxism to romanticism. Anyone interested in what Lukacs called "Romantic anticapitalism," who appreciates such books as Marshall Berman's Adventures in Marxism (1999) Lwy & Sayre's Romanticism against the Tide of Modernity (2001) or E.P. Thompson's The Romantics (1997), will find the Ewen volumes a welcome addition.

Book excerpt: This book is written to demonstrate to you that you are gifted enough to birth your greatness, if you can use the power of your mind to interpret the predicaments, pains, shortcomings, rejections, disappointments and travails that are making life looks to you as an adventure that is not worth exploring; making you feel discouraged to fight the battles of your life; make you feel inferior, concedes to failures and defeats and be entertaining the belief that you are not qualified to win the top prize in life, which thereby makes the space you ought to have occupied in life to be vacant. We used the English alphabets with names of prominent individuals - mostly Nigerians - who have made marks in their path, to show how you can use your "Mind" to envision your dream; to activate your cause, instinct, originality and uniqueness to take "Action" and create, endure, focus, grow, involve, leverage, risk and network in the pursuit of your ambition, in order for you to achieve your goals; and gain balance in "Life," access opportunities and treasures to flourish in your cause, become victorious in your callings and see you rises to the zenith of what you have chosen to live for, the path you have chosen to tread. In this book, you will discover that no successful story is the same. Though, some might look similar. You will learn that out of unflinching drive and unquenchable thirst, some people have designed their successes. Out of the zeal to pursue their ambition, some people have used their talents to navigate in their quest to meeting the time on their own terms. And out of relentless strive to stretch beyond their limits; some people have caused the fruits of their destiny to yield. Behold is the Path to Your Greatness!
