Book Gravity s Revolt Part One

Download or read book Gravity s Revolt Part One written by William Guy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-01-09 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1975. Christopher Reed, a young minister in his first job, receives much-needed seasoning, is necessarily disillusioned. How? On one level by having an affair with Becky Grierson, one of his teen-aged parishioners. But the affair is begun on a theological dare so to speak, in order to test an intriguing vision of the freedom of the Gospel which Dr. Buttrick, the senior pastor under whom Reed works, a truly Christ-like man (though it depends, of course, on what your image of Jesus is) has presented. "Scrupulous," or guilt-stricken, Reed tells his wife Vinnie, an artist and a free-thinker, what he has done with Becky. Vinnie erupts, then curiously, over time, adjusts, gradually accommodates herself, allows the affair to continue. Reed also tells Dr. Buttrick what he has done. Great-spirited, a wise old man, a genius, Dr. Buttrick listens and counsels. He counsels both Reed and Vinnie. The three of them discuss the limits of marriage, the relevance of Christianity to same. Vinnie and Dr. Buttrick have their own intense relationship. Meanwhile the meteoric Becky moves through her senior year in high school, fights free of her youth and prepares to leave for college. Obsessed almost, Reed suffers at the prospect of "losing" her. And grows in some way as a person or at least as a pastor, learning to expect less of the flock which he supposedly leads, since if often acts less than nobly. Some members even turn on Dr. Buttrick, the genuinely good man, in the year of the novels action.

Book The Structural Foundations of Quantum Gravity

Download or read book The Structural Foundations of Quantum Gravity written by Dean Rickles and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum gravity is the name given to a theory that unites general relativity - Einstein's theory of gravitation and spacetime - with quantum field theory, our framework for describing non-gravitational forces. The Structural Foundations of Quantum Gravity brings together philosophers and physicists to discuss a range of conceptual issues that surface in the effort to unite these theories, focusing in particular on the ontological nature of the spacetime that results. Although there has been a great deal written about quantum gravity from the perspective of physicists and mathematicians, very little attention has been paid to the philosophical aspects. This volume closes that gap, with essays written by some of the leading researchers in the field. Individual papers defend or attack a structuralist perspective on the fundamental ontologies of our physical theories, which offers the possibility of shedding new light on a number of foundational problems. It is a book that will be of interest not only to physicists and philosophers of physics but to anyone concerned with foundational issues and curious to explore new directions in our understanding of spacetime and quantum physics.

Book The Early Modern State Drivers Beneficiaries and Discontents

Download or read book The Early Modern State Drivers Beneficiaries and Discontents written by Pepijn Brandon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the early modern period, the capacity of European states to raise finances, wage wars, subject their own and far away populations, and exert bureaucratic power over a variety of areas of social life increased dramatically. Nevertheless, these changes were far less absolute and definitive than the literature on the rise of the "modern state" once held. While war pushed the boundaries of the emerging fiscal military states of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, rulers remained highly dependent on negotiations with competing elite groups and the private networks of contractors and financial intermediaries. Attempts to increase control over subjects often resulted in popular resistance, that in their turn set limits to and influenced the direction of the development of state institutions. Written in honour of the leading historian of war and state formation in the early modern Low Countries, Marjolein 't Hart, the chapters gathered in this volume examine the main drivers, beneficiaries and discontents of state formation across and beyond Europe in the early modern period.

Download or read book Terrorism written by Donald J. Hanle and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism is often depicted as something new and totally alien, a phantom enemy that cannot be understood. But by employing a sophisticated analysis soundly based on an encyclopedic knowledge of military history, Donald J. Hanle shows that three major forms of terrorism—military, revolutionary, and state-sponsored—qualify as the newest forms of war. The author's in-depth investigation reveals that these kinds of terrorists operate in the same basic manner as military forces employed in traditional warfare and have the same basic capabilities and weaknesses. He argues convincingly that countermeasures against these types of terrorist organizations should be based on classical principles of war and combat, and suggests countervailing strategies. Terrorism: The Newest Face of Warfare is a starting point for a sensible and coherent counterterrorism strategy, one that enlists a valuable but heretofore neglected Western arsenal—the study of military history—in the battle against terrorism.

Download or read book The Scientific Revolution written by H. Floris Cohen and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-10-03 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first book-length historiographical study of the Scientific Revolution, H. Floris Cohen examines the body of work on the intellectual, social, and cultural origins of early modern science. Cohen critically surveys a wide range of scholarship since the nineteenth century, offering new perspectives on how the Scientific Revolution changed forever the way we understand the natural world and our place in it. Cohen's discussions range from scholarly interpretations of Galileo, Kepler, and Newton, to the question of why the Scientific Revolution took place in seventeenth-century Western Europe, rather than in ancient Greece, China, or the Islamic world. Cohen contends that the emergence of early modern science was essential to the rise of the modern world, in the way it fostered advances in technology. A valuable entrée to the literature on the Scientific Revolution, this book assesses both a controversial body of scholarship, and contributes to understanding how modern science came into the world.
