Book excerpt: For years, scientists and researchers have studied, speculated about, and searched for an enigmatic creature that is legendary in the annals of American folklore. Now, learn the truth about... BIGFOOT! In this fascinating and comprehensive look at the fact, fiction, and fable of the North American "Sasquatch," award-winning author Loren Coleman takes readers on a journey into America's biggest mystery -- could an unrecognized "ape" be living in our midst? Drawing on over forty years of investigations, interviews, and fieldwork on these incredible beasts, Coleman explores the modern debates about these powerful, ape-like creatures, why they have remained a mystery for so long, and what we can learn about ourselves from these animals, our nearest cousins! From reports of Bigfoot's existence found in ancient Native American traditions, to the controversial Patterson-Gimlin film of a Bigfoot in the wild, to today's Internet sites that record the sightings almost as soon as they occur, Coleman uncovers the past, explains the present, and considers the future of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the natural world.

Book Bigfoot Encounters in Ohio

Download or read book Bigfoot Encounters in Ohio written by Christoper Murphy and published by Crypto Editions. This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable & entertaining account of the bigfoot phenomenon. Ohio is among the top five states in reported bigfoot incidents because of the state's vast farmlands (easy food), extensive forest areas, and abundant water resources. Numerous reports of a strange apelike creature continue to emanate from Ohio's vast rural and forested areas. Now commonly known as bigfoot, the creature is mainly seen in farming communities as it obviously searches for easy food. Large humanlike footprints in cornfields, pasture lands and woodland trails provide tangible evidence of its passage. Joedy Cook and George Clappison have spent almost twenty years investigating the bigfoot phenomenon in Ohio and other eastern states. The information they have gathered on Ohio incidents is presented in this thought-provoking book by Chris Murphy, an author and bigfoot researcher in British Columbia, Canada. While most scientists still reject the possible existence of bigfoot, this book will leave you in awe as to why more is not being done to resolve what is surely North America's greatest mystery. Originally published in 1997 under a different title, the Murphy, Cook, Clappison team has completely revised and updated the work. Many new sightings have been documented and numerous photographs and illustrations have been added. The book has had a complete makeover, with the provision of more and better information on all aspects of the remarkable bigfoot phenomenon in the State of Ohio. Ohio ranks sixth in North America in the number of bigfoot-related incidents by state or province. The details provided in this book give a clear understanding of just how widespread the phenomenon is in Ohio. The astounding eye-witness accounts will convince even the most ardent skeptics that the bigfoot issue has gone far beyond legend and willful fabrications. About the title: Use of the Ohio term Grassman to identify an unusual ape-man creature appears to go back to at least the turn of the last century. Apparently, sightings of the creature in tall grass (including the young of the species) on Ohio's plains resulted in the name. As the creature was somewhat terrifying in appearance, it appears the term was used in a foreboding sense with children (i.e., the Grassman will get you ). Descriptions of the Grassman are identical to those of bigfoot or the sasquatch; however, the Grassman appears to have some different habits or ways of life.

I've written different articles for blogs and my organization, the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Project, to help others understand. What I've learned others may not agree with. That's just about guaranteed. There are many viewpoints on the Bigfoot species. Are they the North American Wood Ape? A yet Undiscovered Ancient Hominid, a Primate, Dinanthropoides magnipus, etc? Are they the many Native American creature, the Ohio Grassman, Wendigo, the Sasquatch, Skookum, Woodbooger, Boogeyman of our grandfathers, Skunk Apes, or the more scientific name of Australopithecus robustus? We're all learning together. We researchers must share our knowledge so that we all can learn more about these amazing creatures.

Book Talking to the Shaman Within

Download or read book Talking to the Shaman Within written by Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything about hunting leads inexorably to death; the challenge for all hunters is how to justify the kill. But the hunters emotional response to the kill is immensely complex. Hunters respectand even lovethe animals they kill. Talking to the Shaman Within: Musings on Hunting addresses this paradox head-on, dissecting the emotional and psychological response of the hunter to his quarry and, more broadly, his surroundings. The climax of the chase brings the hunter closer to realizing the nature intelligence that modern civilization has suppressed. Through his investigation of the instinct that lies beneath the urge to hunt, author Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries reveals something basic and fundamental about human behavior. The hunting instinct is hardwired into the human psyche, and, for all our sophistication and urbanization, it exerts a powerful influence over the way we conduct our lives even to this day. Talking to the Shaman Within draws on depictions of hunting in art and literature throughout the ages exploring changing trends in human social norms with frequent reference to literature, art, film, television, and music. It unites a dispassionate academic hypothesis with an engaging and colourful narrative into which Kets de Vries weaves stories from his own lifeas both an academic and a hunter.

Book excerpt: In the 21st century, reality television and the Internet have fed public interest in ghosts, UFOs, cryptozoology and other unusual phenomena. By 2010, roughly 2000 amateur research and investigation groups formed in the U.S.--ghost hunters, Bigfoot chasers and UFO researchers, using an array of (supposedly) scientific equipment and methods to prove the existence of the paranormal. American culture's honorific regard for science, coupled with the public's unfamiliarity with scientific methods, created a niche for self-styled paranormal experts to achieve national renown without scientific training or credentials. The author provides a comprehensive examination of the ideas, missions and methods promoted by these passionate amateurs.

Book Mysterious Creatures 2 volumes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to cryptozoology—the quest to identify animals that have not been officially catalogued by science and to place these unknown animals into their proper zoological categories. In this fascinating two-volume encyclopedia, author George M. Eberhart provides a comprehensive catalog of nearly 1,000 cryptids—unknown animals usually reported through eyewitness accounts and not yet described by science. Cryptids are the stuff of folklore, hoaxes, and genuine scientific breakthroughs. There are 400 now-classified cryptids once considered either extinct or pure fantasy. The cryptozoologist's job is to strip away the myth, misidentification, and mystery—and separate fact from fiction. Mysterious Creatures covers everything from dinosaurs and the emala-ntouka, an elephant-killing dinosaur-like animal of central Africa, to searches for the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, and other cryptozoological hoaxes. Entries about specific animals include the derivation or meaning of each cryptid's name, its scientific name, variant names, a physical description, behavior, description of tracks, habitat, significant sightings, present status, and possible explanations. Illustrations and photographs accompany many entries. The book also includes resources and references for further information.

Book Imaginary Animals

Download or read book Imaginary Animals written by Boria Sax and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary menagerie of fantastical and unreal beasts featuring hundreds of illustrations, from griffins to dog-men, mermaids, dragons, unicorns, and yetis. Fire-breathing dragons, beautiful mermaids, majestic unicorns, terrifying three-headed dogs—these fantastic creatures have long excited our imagination. Medieval authors placed them in the borders of manuscripts as markers of the boundaries of our understanding. Tales from around the world place these beasts in deserts, deep woods, remote islands, ocean depths, and alternate universes—just out of our reach. And in the sections on the apocalypse in the Bible, they proliferate as the end of time approaches, with horses with heads like lions, dragons, and serpents signaling the destruction of the world. Legends tell us that imaginary animals belong to a primordial time, before everything in the world had names, categories, and conceptual frameworks. In this book, Boria Sax digs into the stories of these fabulous beasts. He shows how, despite their liminal role, imaginary animals like griffins, dog-men, yetis, and more are socially constructed creatures, created through the same complex play of sensuality and imagination as real ones. Tracing the history of imaginary animals from Paleolithic art to their roles in stories such as Harry Potter and even the advent of robotic pets, he reveals that these extraordinary figures help us psychologically—as monsters, they give form to our amorphous fears, while as creatures of wonder, they embody our hopes. Their greatest service, Sax concludes, is to continually challenge our imaginations, directing us beyond the limitations of conventional beliefs and expectations. Featuring over 230 illustrations of a veritable menagerie of fantastical and unreal beasts, Imaginary Animals is a feast for the eyes and the imagination.

Book Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology written by Michael Newton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

Paranormal Nation: Why America Needs Ghosts, UFOs, and Bigfoot explores the events that have defined paranormal belief systems today.
