Book Grandmama and The Church of the People

Download or read book Grandmama and The Church of the People written by Yevonne and Benton Cohen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grandmama and the Church of the People Inspired by Psalm 78 v. 1-4, this engaging series of lesson-laden vignettes, set in a fictitious, small-town, Negro church in South Carolina over the course of 20 years between 1945 and 1965, serves as a pretext for Grandmama to teach her passel of unnamed grandchildren about the curious ways of the "Good Lord God"...Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Through the telling of her stories, Grandmama unfurls fables about the forms and fashions as well as the fun foibles of faith fellowship at The Church of the People, and shows us all that in our human-ness, we will surely fall short of God's perfect ways sometimes, even Grandmama, her own self. The stories are related in the conversational Ebonics of that era. Grandmama is a woman with a formal education that only reached sixth grade, yet she has the Master's degree in Christian life learning, as taught by the Holy Spirit. Most of the stories are light and some are "fall out" funny, but others tackle subjects that challenge Christian communities to eschew the worship of denominations, individual churches or charismatic leaders in favor of a real personal relationship with God, the Holy Father of all Creation...God, the Son, who sacrificed everything for the undeserving...and God, the Person of Holy Spirit, who walks and talks with us through the signposts of life, and who can get His feelings hurt when we disobey, in the name of God.

Book Everyone Should Have a Gay Son

Download or read book Everyone Should Have a Gay Son written by Rev. Dr. Jeri E. Williams and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Rev. Dr. Jeri E. Williams is an American Baptist pastor, people assume having a gay son must be devastating and contradictory to her beliefs. In some extremes, people even recommended conversion therapy or disowning her own son. But, in reality, having a gay son has driven her to be even stronger in standing up to the bullies and to demonstrate she would do anything for him, just as she would for any of her children. In an effort to stop the hurt and help people love one another, no matter who we are or whom we love, she presents an insightful exploration of how one small church has made an overwhelmingly large difference in the lives of many of God’s children who have been ostracized by the church-at-large. Everyone Should Have a Gay Son shares Williams’ story, a story that’s been guided by the Holy Spirit, in hopes that you’ll find your own pathway on the road to acceptance. Everyone Should Have a Gay Son reveals a pastor’s journey beyond the church’s exclusion of the LGBTQ+ community to a stance of inclusion – from growing up thinking homosexuality is a sin to an absolute belief that it is not.

Book I Will Not Leave You Comfortless

Download or read book I Will Not Leave You Comfortless written by Jeremy Jackson and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir of “a happy childhood in rural Missouri just before the digital revolution [is] a sweet record of a time and a place that was not Always On.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spanning one year of the author’s life—1984—I Will Not Leave You Comfortless is the intimate memoir of a young boy coming to consciousness in small-town Missouri. The year will bring ten-year-old Jeremy first loves, first losses, and a break from the innocence of boyhood that will never be fully repaired. For Jeremy, the seeming security of his life on the family farm is forever shaken by the life-altering events of that pivotal year. Throughout, he recalls the deeply sensual wonders of his rural Midwestern childhood—bicycle rides in September sunlight; the horizon vanishing behind tall grasses—while stories both heart-wrenching and humorous, tragic and triumphant, Jackson weaves past, present, and future into the rich Missouri landscape. “I could smell the mulberries crushed underfoot and the sweet steam of the cinnamon roll Grandma heated in the toaster oven just for Jeremy, hear the ever-increasing volume of an approaching late-spring storm . . . The year of Jeremy Jackson’s life on which he meditates in I Will Not Leave You Comfortless marked his transition from the perfect happiness of childhood to the much more complex reality of adulthood. It records, as well, the abiding comfort that remains—family, home and love.” —Wichita Eagle “Jackson writes about Missouri as the young Hemingway wrote about Michigan: with a clear eye; with hard-edged nostalgia; and (here’s the thing) with brilliance.” —Darin Strauss, author of Half a Life

Book Caught Between Two Spiritual Worlds

Download or read book Caught Between Two Spiritual Worlds written by Reverend Harold A. Vieux and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story, a series of events that transpired in my life which I deemed necessary to expose and by so doing alert others to vigilance. Naturally, the subject matter is sensitive both for me and all parties involved. I can never discount the relevance of demons, deny their reality and their harassing ways. If and when I was to do so, I would magnify the role of human agents. Frequently, even mature Christians underestimate the magnitude of the spiritual warfare enlisted in from the time of the new birth. We are in a severe struggle, persistently and subtly driven by powerful, spiritual opposing forces beyond our comprehension. Often we rely on human resources and fail to use the spiritual source available to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. I fell in the fourth generation of my maternal fore-parents lineage to suffer unnecessary heartbreaking consequences because of spiritual ignorance. Since I came to see the light of Jesus Christ, I made up my mind to loose all yokes of bondage over my generation and the ones to come after me should Christ tarry. I now know demonic spirits are to be kept afar and never be trusted. Even though at times through subtlety we may be deceived to think that certain spirits work for the good and well-being of a person, such deception should be seen as a trap, a means of securing the individual into a mesh. Sooner or later, such individual will be caught unaware and conquered. It should never be a surprise how the Devil, the starch enemy of the saints, will use anyone, foe and often those who would be considered ally, to win a person over to cause him to fall. Read on and enjoy this treat to your spiritual health!

Book In My Grandmother s House

Download or read book In My Grandmother s House written by Yolanda Pierce and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the most steadfast faith you'll ever encounter comes from a Black grandmother? The church mothers who raised Yolanda Pierce, dean of Howard University School of Divinity, were busily focused on her survival. In a world hostile to Black women's bodies and spirits, they had to be. Born on a former cotton plantation and having fled the terrors of the South, Pierce's grandmother raised her in the faith inherited from those who were enslaved. Now, in the pages of In My Grandmother's House, Pierce reckons with that tradition, building an everyday womanist theology rooted in liberating scriptures, experiences in the Black church, and truths from Black women's lives. Pierce tells stories that center the experiences of those living on the underside of history, teasing out the tensions of race, spirituality, trauma, freedom, resistance, and memory. A grandmother's theology carries wisdom strong enough for future generations. The Divine has been showing up at the kitchen tables of Black women for a long time. It's time to get to know that God.
