Book excerpt: 'All Moonshine' is a journey through time and history, made by a young girl with a strong sense of her ancestry rooted in a love of the sea and in God's purpose for their lives. As the story unfolds the characters develop enabling us to recognise their strengths and weaknesses. It is about a family who are shaped by great tragedy, cruel hardship, intrigue and Victorian snobbery. Martha Moon's husband and his brother are Master Mariners who loose their lives at sea leaving their wives to provide for their children. When Martha's only son then dies tragically of a deadly disease in Australia, her daughters are left to make the most of their poverty with dignity and the 'hope' of a lost legacy. Matilda, Martha's eldest daughter struggles to bring up nine children with little help from her husband and it is then left to Minnie, her eldest daughter to try to regain lost ground. A feisty character, Minnie is ready to uphold the poor and needy and the rights of both women and children. She surprises everyone by marrying against her principles and looses her home twice to fire, at the same time loosing any hope of motherhood or personal fulfilment; but inspired by her grandmother, she keeps her faith in God and lives to be over a hundred years old. Her brother's daughter, Sabina is the one remaining descendent of the 'Moon" family in England. She has an uncertain future and poor health, but Min sees to it that she will inherit what is left of their legacy, and together they discover that it is 'All Moonshine'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sydney Saylor Farr is a woman who knows Appalachia well. Born on Stoney Fork in southeastern Kentucky, she has lived much of her life close to the mountains, among people whose roots are deep in the soil and who pass on to their children a love for the land, a strong sense of belonging and of place.Mountain food and how it is cooked is very much a part of this sense of place. Ask any displaced Appalachians what they miss most and they will probably talk about soup beans, country ham, and homemade buscuits. They may also remember the kitchens at home, the warmth from the wood-burning stove, the smell of coffee, and the family gathered around the kitchen table to eat and talk.More than Moonshine is both a cookbook and a narrative that recounts the way of life of southern Appalachia from the 1940s to 1983. The women of Stoney Fork rarely had cash to spend, so they depended upon the free products of nature - their cookery used every nutritious, edible thing they could scour from the gardens and hillsides. These survival skills are recounted in the pages of More than Moonshine, with instructions for making moonshine whiskey, for fixing baked groundhog with sweet potatoes, for making turnip kraut, craklin' bread, egg pie, apple stackcake, and other traditional dishes.More than Moonshine is more than a cookbook. It evokes a way of life in the mid-twentieth century not unlike that of pioneer days.

Book excerpt: Hi, my name is Neven. I'm very attractive and come from a family that were never slaves. The family is very large and physically beautiful. Our family has always been wealthy. Once, they almost lost everything, but they came back with a vengeance, never to be without again by any means necessary. To this day, none of the elders in my family have never had to work and have been able to take care of their large families. My granny raised me and two of my older cousins. I have an amazing life that I was born in, and any problems I have ever had, for the most part, did not have to happen. I have always had very expensive things. The people in my life never knew how wealthy our family is, so they did extravagant things for me. I'm handsome, humble, and sometimes I can have a slick mouth, which they like; and if you push me, I will lose my head on you. I have very famous friends that, for the most part, don't know me. They just see the pretty picture and that I don't have to want for anything like some of them. I have more money than them.

Book excerpt: Daniel is a young Métis man searching for a way to exist in a world of lateral violence, intergenerational trauma and systemic racism. Facing obstacles of his own at every turn, he observes and learns from the lived realities of his family members, friends, teachers and lovers. He finds hope in the inherent connection of Indigenous Peopls to the land, and the permanence of culture, language and ceremony in the face of displacement. Set in Edmonton, this story considers Indigenous youth in relation to the urban constructs and colonial spaces in which they survive—from violence, whitewashing, trauma and racism to language revitalization, relationships with Elders, restaking land claims and ultimately, triumph. Based on Papaschase and Métis oral histories and lived experience, Conor Kerr’s debut novel will not soon be forgotten.

Book Moonshine to Moonbloom

Download or read book Moonshine to Moonbloom written by Barbara Knott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aradella Stark came into a world beautifully rooted in nature but limited in cultural development. How she transcends that limitation is the overarching theme of the book, set during the mid-1900s in a cotton mill village located in Northwest Georgia where her mother is a nightshift spinner at the mill and her father a house painter who makes most of his income from bootlegging moonshine whiskey. Nurtured by her angelic uncle, often referred to as "peculiar," she learns to love nature and experiences racial harmony with nearby neighbors. This story of Aradella Stark's coming of age is surrounded and supported by story chapters that enrich the sense of her emerging from a strongly imagized particular place and community and family. Her own intelligence and compassion, discerned and brought into bloom by a church pastor who links her to work and college in Atlanta, make possible her eventual doctoral education and her return to reclaim her roots. Despite the absence of cultural advantages known to city dwellers, what was not absent from her youth were the alternating tragic and comic motifs found in the best Southern fiction tradition, designed to bring to the reader deep engagement and moments of great delight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ozarks conveys a different mental image for everyone. Some visualize long black beards, moonshine whiskey, and corncob pipes, while others imagine canoe trips down clear, free-flowing, gravel-bottom streams, oak and hickory forests, a log cabin nestled in a wooded grove, and a wisp of blue-gray smoke floating above a native stone chimney. Life in the Missouri Ozarks was hard and taken seriously. At the same time, the folks who scratched out a living from the rocky ground never lost their sense of humor and the zest for life. Pie suppers, turkey shoots, and church were time for folks to get together and catch up on what was happening with their neighbors. Between the covers of this book, you will experience colorful characters, boyhood shenanigans, and a real feel for what is was like to be a big-city kid moving back to his ancestral roots. If you haven't experienced the sweetness of a ripe watermelon chilled in a cold spring and laced with high-quality moonshine, you should add it to your bucket list. Or better yet, discover the experience through the tale of an innocent boy's first taste.

Book Rustics and Politics

Download or read book Rustics and Politics written by Leslie Dale Feldman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beverly Hillbillies includes the portrayal of rich versus poor, the American dream, wealth, and social mobility in popular culture. The Hillbillies was a phenomenon of post-World War II America, the second wave after the 1950s, the dustbelt Depression meets the promise of opportunity achieved through luck. Luck counts in liberal society. It is, said Machiavelli, “the arbiter of half of what we do.” But is success based on luck really the American dream? And who is the bigger success story—the Hillbillies or those who have earned their wealth? Whom do we want to be or be like? Everyone wants to win the lottery, but is everyone willing to do what it takes to achieve financial independence without winning the lottery? Does winning the lottery bring social status or can it only be achieved by labor? In sum, Paul Henning’s brilliant comedy series The Beverly Hillbillies is replete with political ideas and has come to occupy a special place in popular culture as a classic television icon because of its deeper meaning and relationship to how we think about wealth, status, social mobility and the American dream.
