Book A Valley So Grand

Download or read book A Valley So Grand written by Robert W. McLeod and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The community of Grand Junction, Colorado, began in 1881 following the deportation of most of the state's western Ute Indian tribes to the Uintah Indian Reservation in the Utah Territory. After "Lo" (the poor Indian) was forcibly removed, white men could not populate the vicinity fast enough. What was once the exclusive domain of the Ute was rapidly usurped by toilers of the tiller's trade. The vast expanses of Gunnison County were divided into Mesa, Delta and Montrose counties. Conditions in the newly founded town of Grand Junction were Spartan, to say the least, but within 30 years the community was as cosmopolitan as any in America. Irrigation canals were constructed and the desert bloomed in profusion until Mesa County became nearly the finest agricultural-producing locality in the country. The whole story is here-from horse blanket-doored hovels to the multi-story Grand Valley National Bank, streetcars and automobiles. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear . . .

Book Geologic Hazards of Moab Spanish Valley Grand County Utah

Download or read book Geologic Hazards of Moab Spanish Valley Grand County Utah written by Michael D. Hylland and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2003 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moab Valley and the contiguous Spanish Valley comprise a popular residential and recreational area in east-central Utah. Geologic processes that created the rugged and scenic landscape of Moab-Spanish Valley are still active today and can be hazardous to property and life. To address development in areas with geologic hazards, the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) conducted a geologic-hazards investigation to provide information to Moab City and Grand County to help guide development and reduce losses from geologic hazards. This report includes maps of Moab Valley and the northern and central parts of Spanish Valley that provide information on geologic hazards to assist homeowners, planners, and developers in making informed decisions. The maps show areas where hazards may exist and where site-specific studies are advisable prior to development. The maps are for planning purposes only, and do not preclude the necessity for site investigations. Site-specific studies by qualified professionals (engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, hydrologists) should evaluate hazards and, if necessary, recommend hazard-reduction measures. Because of the small scale of the maps, some hazard areas are not shown; hazard studies are therefore recommended for all critical facilities (for example, hospitals, schools, fire stations), including those outside the mapped hazard areas.

People living along this range enjoy watching the sun cast the alpenglow on the cliffs as the sun sets. Ute people, ranchers, settlers even hermits have occupied the cedar, pinion and oak brush-covered slopes. Old and new coal mines dot the mountain from Palisade to Price . The Ute people leaving Colorado at the time of the Meeker Massacre used most of the state for hunting. They also used the numerous hot springs in the mountains for medicinal purposes. Book The Valley of Opportunity

Download or read book The Valley of Opportunity written by Steven F. Mehls and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1982 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication represents the latest Class I (History) to be written for the western slope of Colorado. Our three districts in this region of Colorado now have histories specifically for them. Such works provide a valuable and needed synthesis of history and literature for these areas and also gives our managers data that are used on a daily basis for land-use decision making. Multiple land use is a Bureau mission that is being met. Oil and gas, coal, oil shale and other energy minerals, not to mention rights-of-ways, grazing programs, recreation projects and land-use planning, are all supported by histories such as this. Resource Management Plans and subsequent Environmental Impact Statements that are produced for the Bureau's Area Offices are the foundations for long-term land-use management. The Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement is a Bureau pilot document and serves as a management tool for the Glenwood Springs Resource Area. This history, Volley of Opportunity supports the Resource Management Plan. In addition, a history provides background and support for the upcoming Grand Junction Resource Area Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement. The Volley of Opportunity has already been used for Oil Shale Environmental Statements and for the Federal Coal Leasing Program in the Grand Junction, Colorado, District. Truly, such histories are not only multiple-use in scope but are also management tools that provide basic understanding for land use decisions. Additionally, this history represents an ongoing effort to provide the public reader with a work that is not only interesting but is also well researched. In this way, another sector is satisfied. These histories are used by schools, libraries, universities and, of course, the general public. Again, multiple-use is served. Finally, as the Volley of Opportunity was being prepared, it happened that the City of Grand Junction's Centennial would occur in 1982. Coincidentally, the Glenwood Springs Resource Management Plan will be published in November 1982. Since this history serves several purposes, it is appropriate that it also is the Bureau's contribution to Grand Junction's Centennial celebration.
