Book excerpt: Microfinance has, over the past decades, been proved as an effective and irreversible technique for tackling poverty. Banker to the Poor Muhammad Yunus's story in Bangladesh has long become a worldwide household tale. Yet this book brings you into a successful Grameen replication story in one of the most troublesome regions in the post-Cold War Balkans and details how microlending, often a few hundred euros at a time, can be a lifeline for tens of thousands of village women in the post-war Kosovo. Olympic volunteer and CGI U commitment-maker Hongyu Wang's two months ground survey, observation, and interview in Bangladesh, in Dhaka and in villages, with Yunus himself or with this replication's pioneers who stationed in Kosovo from NATO bombing days up until now, is a vivid account on how microcredit humanitarian manoeuvre, in war and in peace, can be just as successful in any culture and socioeconomic-political circumstance. Book American Confusion from Vietnam to Kosovo

Download or read book American Confusion from Vietnam to Kosovo written by William R. Taylor and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Taylor presents an original theory of the dynamics of confusion in governments and in the lives of ordinary citizens. His model postulates a vicious cycle in which the causes of confusion evoke coping tactics which often worsen those causes. One of the most destructive coping tactics, “Find-an-Enemy-and-Lose-Your-Confusion” spawns conflict and increases the lies and other information pathology already circulating. “Exports” from this vicious cycle include environmental depredation, political oppression, war and death. Using his model, he illuminates the binds entrapping Robert McNamara and Lyndon Johnson as they expanded the Vietnam War in 1965. He then extends the theory using fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs), and submits the model to the ultimate test: forecasting in “real time” certain events in the 1999 NATO-Serbia War and its aftermath. He published these predictions on his web site during and after that war. This project represents the first use of FCMs to forecast political-military events in real time. The concluding chapters test whether a knowledge of confusion dynamics will increase empathy between opponents, and whether the model is useful for planning humanitarian efforts by betterment organizations.

Apart from theoretical arguments in favor of the value-based cooperative business model, this book presents the performance indicators of various forms of cooperatives, their potentialities, and challenges they face across borders. The contributors reexamine how cooperatives empower the marginalized population of the world by bringing them into the mainstream of socio-economic activities through creating employment opportunities, working towards alleviation of poverty, ensuring for more equitable distribution of scarce resources, and providing the basis for a sustainable economy and its meaningful growth. Today, in the global competitive economy, the challenges for cooperatives are enormous due to their particular value commitments, forms of incorporation, and organizational structures. In spite of the presence of several challenges, cooperatives promote economic growth and social justice. In this context, this book also presents the critical roles of cooperatives in balancing economic, social, and environmental concerns to build a better, equitable, and sustainable world.

Book Women Sustainable Entrepreneurship and the Economy

Download or read book Women Sustainable Entrepreneurship and the Economy written by Kıymet Tunca Çalıyurt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a woman decides to become an ‘entrepreneur,’ she starts her business with a sense of excitement, freedom, wealth, happiness, prestige; however, these feelings can soon turn to fears over debt, difficulties, unpaid invoices, stress, and uncertainty. Being an entrepreneur means taking risks, making decisions, adapting management styles in line with developmental needs, clashing with rivals, being more agile than competitors, negotiating risky scenarios, following business trends, capturing new opportunities before, and being better than the competition. If a woman wants to be successful as an entrepreneur, she needs to have a business education, undergo continued professional development, and have patience and emotional intelligence. Supporting women in their entrepreneurial activities has been shown to positively affect the economy, which is why governments pay special attention to opening new funding opportunities and training programs for women who want to start or develop a business. Female entrepreneurship has individual characteristics because of those aspects of the business which are affected by cultural, technological, legislative, social, and historical developments. This book discusses the relationship between female entrepreneurship and the economy, and academic authors from developing countries such as Brazil, Turkey, Albania, Kosovo, Portugal, and Malaysia analyze the developments encompassing women and entrepreneurship in their respective countries. The authors discuss the regulatory frameworks of each country to show how these either help or hinder female entrepreneurship, and consequently, the place of women in the economy. Women and entrepreneurship is an emerging theme, and this book is a must-read for researchers from both developing and developed countries.
