Book Easing Restrictions on the Stripping and Reconstitution of Government of Canada Bonds

Download or read book Easing Restrictions on the Stripping and Reconstitution of Government of Canada Bonds written by David Jamieson Bolder and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Finance and the Bank of Canada, as its fiscal agent, work closely with financial market participants in the management of the federal government's debt program. From the government's perspective, maintaining a liquid well-functioning market in Government of Canada securities is a key factor in ensuring that debt-service costs are minimized. It is also of general benefit to other participants in the domestic fixed-income market, since Government of Canada securities are a key benchmark for pricing other fixed-income securities. This paper reviews one method for limiting the ability of market participants to exercise undue influence over the prices of individual securities by easing restrictions that limit the fungibility of coupon and principal cash flows in the market for stripped securities. The two restrictions considered include the current ceiling on reconstitution, which states that a bond may not be reconstituted beyond the amount originally issued, and the present non-fungiblility of interest and coupon payments. The authors examine the effectiveness of the alternatives, provide an analysis of the potential market and legal uncertainties that might arise, and finally include a brief review of the stripping practices in some other major government bond markets. The analysis suggests that the potential changes could constitute a useful approach for limiting the development of a squeeze in certain circumstances. These alternatives could, however, create uncertainty with regard to the actual amount outstanding of any given bond. They also raise some questions with respect to the tax treatment of fungible interest-principal payments, as well as questions about the potential for the manipulation of the market for other bonds. Moreover, a review of other major government bond markets reveals that restrictions, similar to those currently in force in Canada, also apply in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Book Government Bonds and their Investors

Download or read book Government Bonds and their Investors written by Mr.Jochen R. Andritzky and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper introduces a new dataset on the composition of the investor base for government securities in the G20 advanced economies and the euro area. During the last decades, investors from abroad have increased their presence in government bond markets. The financial crisis broke this trend. Domestic financial institutions allocated a larger share of government securities in their portfolios, as Japan has done since its crisis in the 1990s. Increases in the share held by institutional investors or non-residents by 10 percentage points are associated with a reduction in yields by about 25 or 40 basis points, respectively. The data show a varied lead-lag relationship between bond yields and investor holdings. Portfolio balance estimates suggest that a change in statutory or regulatory holdings of government securities to the tune of 10 percent of the outstanding stock causes expected returns to decline by 7 to 25 basis points.

Book The International Government Bond Markets

Download or read book The International Government Bond Markets written by Frank Joseph Jones and published by Irwin Professional Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increased awareness of the international bond markets as potential sources of return enhancement and/or risk reduction. As a result, investors throughout the world have increasingly adopted a global approach and invested in bonds from several countries. Governments have encouraged this by liberalizing their bond markets, making them more liquid and more accessible to international investors. Futures and options markets have been developed on government bonds in several major countries, permitting more effective implementation of investment strategies. Many global investors restrict their participation in foreign bond markets to foreign government bonds because of their low credit risk and their liquidity. Because of their crucial role, The International Government Bond Markets by Frank J. Jones and Frank J. Fabozzi focuses on eight of the world's major government bond markets: the U.S., Japan, Germany, the U.K., France, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia. It is the first book that provides a single, unified, succinct source of information about these major government bond markets. The core information is supplemented by the treatment of several other topics of importance and interest to global bond investors. The book is divided into three sections: . Section I provides background information about price yield/conventions, accrued interest calculation, international clearing organizations and global custody. Section II describes the eight government bond markets in terms of: nature of the market (maturity, structure and types of issues); method of issuance (primary market); secondary market; price/yield conventions; settlement procedures; taxation; and futures and options markets. Section III discusses investment strategies, beginning with an overview of the foreign exchange market and instruments for controlling foreign exchange risk, and concluding with a general framework for designing an active global bond portfolio strategy.
