Book excerpt: · In Portland, Oregon, the wives of several prominent businessmen have disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only a black rose and a note with a simple message: “Gone, But Not Forgotten.” · An identical series of disappearances occurred in Hunter’s Point, New York, ten years ago—but the killer was caught, the case was closed and the special “rose killer” task force was disbanded. · Betsy Tannenbaum, a Portland wife and mother who has gained national recognition as a feminist defense attorney, is retained by multimillionaire Portland developer Martin Darius—for no apparent reason. · Nancy Gordon, a homicide detective for the Hunter’s Point Police Department and an original member of the “rose killer” task force, hasn’t slept a full night in ten years, haunted by nightmares of a sadistic killer who, she swears, is still out there. . . · Alan Page, the Portland district attorney, trying to make sense of the sudden series of disappearances, opens his front door one evening to find Nancy Gordon on his doorstep—determined to tell him a story he won’t soon forget. · Across the country, in Washington, D.C., the President of the United States has just selected United States Senator Raymond Colby to be the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In a private meeting, Colby assures the President there are no skeletons in his closet. Complex, utterly compelling, and brilliantly executed, GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN is a book that truly lives up to its extraordinary advance praise: Once begun it simply cannot be put down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gone but Not Forgotten is the first of a historical fiction trilogy set in America and Europe from 1914 to 1918. It chronicles the tale of the Gilded Age of pageantry through the end of the Great War. It is the story of the Champions, the Wagners and the Sterns, an epical saga of their lives, trials, and tribulations. The story opens at an outdoor wedding in fashionable Newport, Rhode Island. The heroines are beautiful twin sisters, Veda and Rose Champion. Veda is the spoiled American debutante with an iron will. Rose is the gentler beauty and is passively strong. Hans Wagner, the male protagonist, is a German immigrant who comes to America with the quest to live his dream. His best Jewish friend, Rudolph Stern, also arrives from Germany to study medicine. The toils of the Great War halt the hopes of both while ushering in a series of tragedies for the Champion family, including the sinking of the Lusitania, the death of the twins’ brother, Marius Champion, on the battlefields of France, and the vicious murder of their grandparents in Verdon. The novel will be followed by two others, spanning 1918–2000. The trilogy is a portrait of the most significant events in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: "An assured, powerful novel that blends suspense and rich family drama...it is, in a word, unforgettable." --William Landay, author of DEFENDING JACOB Wendy Walker's All Is Not Forgotten begins in the small, affluent town of Fairview, Connecticut, where everything seems picture perfect. Until one night when young Jenny Kramer is attacked at a local party. In the hours immediately after, she is given a controversial drug to medically erase her memory of the violent assault. But, in the weeks and months that follow, as she heals from her physical wounds, and with no factual recall of the attack, Jenny struggles with her raging emotional memory. Her father, Tom, becomes obsessed with his inability to find her attacker and seek justice while her mother, Charlotte, struggles to pretend this horrific event did not touch her carefully constructed world. As Tom and Charlotte seek help for their daughter, the fault lines within their marriage and their close-knit community emerge from the shadows where they have been hidden for years, and the relentless quest to find the monster who invaded their town - or perhaps lives among them - drive this psychological thriller to a shocking and unexpected conclusion.

Book excerpt: "This book examines the ways that Atlantans have remembered the Civil War since 1865. During the Civil War, Atlanta became the second most important city in the Confederacy, after Richmond. Since the end of the war, Atlanta's civic and business leaders promoted its image as a 'Phoenix City' rising from the ashes of General William T. Sherman's wartime destruction. According to this carefully constructed view, Atlanta respects its Confederate past while also moving forward with business growth and 'progress.' Yet in spite of its economic success since 1865, Atlanta is a city where the meaning of the Civil War continues to be debated and contested, where whites and blacks remember the war in different and conflicting ways. Periodically, racial tension has marred the city's reputation and its progressive spirit. Today, Atlanta (and the South) have achieved reconciliation with the North but debate over Civil War memory is ongoing"--

Book Grown and Gone But Not Forgotten

Download or read book Grown and Gone But Not Forgotten written by Ron Fuller and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of short stories mostly from my childhood growing up in Central Florida. Most of the stories are true and my characters are real. However, I have included some stories that have just enough truth to keep it real and just enough embellishment to keep it entertaining. I began writing these stories as a journal of sorts to be able to pass on to my children and grandchildren some stories of my childhood. After I wrote five or six, I thought I had exhausted all my memories. However, as I wrote, one memory led to another, and another, and so on. I had always been convinced that my childhood had been relatively insignificant. As I took the opportunity to look back on my childhood through the eyes of a man in his 60's, I slowly began to realize I had a great childhood. I just didn't realize it at the time. You see, neglected to ask my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and siblings enough questions to really get to know them. I knew what their adult lives were like, but I now wonder what their childhood was like. As I wrote, I would post on Facebook Group pages for my hometown, which was the Winter Haven/Auburndale area. The stories seemed to hit home with many folks, and I was encouraged to assemble my stories into a book. I also created a few videos about growing up and I have included links to those in the ebook edition.

Book excerpt: With hundreds of rare pictures, this award-winning volume captures the many architectural gems that North Carolina's Port City has lost from the colonial period to the present day. Some were lost to natural disasters like fires and hurricanes. Others fell victim to the "progress" of Urban Renewal or the sometimes short-sightedness of private developers. Regardless of how or why these buildings were torn down and lost, they represent pages ripped from the community's collective history. Preservationist Beverly Tetterton has assembled a collection of lost places that serve as cautionary tales for modern planners and citizens.

He had the privilege of studying with Dr. Viktor Frankl, the author of Man’s Search for Meaning.
