Book excerpt: Explore this stunning quality of God’s grace: It never ends! In this revision of a foundational work, John Piper reveals how grace is not only God’s undeserved gift to us in the past, but also God’s power to make good happen for us today, tomorrow, and forever. True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.
Download or read book Time in Ancient Stories of Origin written by Anke Walter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek and Roman stories of origin, or aetia, provide a fascinating window onto ancient conceptions of time. Aetia pervade ancient literature at all its stages, and connect the past with the present by telling us which aspects of the past survive "even now" or "ever since then". Yet, while the standard aetiological formulae remain surprisingly stable over time, the understanding of time that lies behind stories of origin undergoes profound changes. By studying a broad range of texts and by closely examining select stories of origin from archaic Greece, Hellenistic Greece, Augustan Rome, and early Christian literature, Time in Ancient Stories of Origin traces the changing forms of stories of origin and the underlying changing attitudes to time: to the interaction of the time of gods and men, to historical time, to change and continuity, as well as to a time beyond the present one. Walter provides a model of how to analyse the temporal construction of aetia, by combining close attention to detail with a view towards the larger temporal agenda of each work. In the process, new insights are provided both into some of the best-known aetiological works of antiquity (e.g. by Hesiod, Callimachus, Vergil, Ovid) and lesser-known works (e.g. Ephorus, Prudentius, Orosius). This volume shows that aetia do not merely convey factual information about the continuity of the past, but implicate the present in ever new complex messages about time.

The #1 New York Times bestselling true story about the American rowing triumph of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin—from the author of Facing the Mountain For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A person’s handwriting reveals something about who they are—their intellect, perspectives, natural abilities, and hidden aptitudes. It’s also a form of expression that sends a message about how they want to be seen by others. In our lives and world, things are not as they are by accident. They’re written in a specific way, and the size, placement, direction, and pressure of strokes has everything to do with the One who signed His name on it all. The Signature of God is about a God who reveals who He is through the beauty and intricacy of creation. He’s signed His name on all He made, and the purpose in it is nothing short of miraculous. Nature, the universe, and God’s interaction with us through His creation say much about Him and how He feels about us. If we look carefully at His writing, we realize that He’s always given us a way to know His character and heart. In this book of Christian apologetics and personal reflection, Rhonda Dawes Milner delves into her experiences as a physician, therapist, spiritual director, and mother to show us the significance and meaning of God’s signature in our lives and in the world.

His keen perspective looks carefully around, peers into the depths of the soul, and gazes up at the heights. Little in nature escaped Father Tabb's notice: flowers; birdsong; the beating of the rain; the passage of sun, moon, and stars; the cycles of the seasons; and the march of the years. Everywhere, he saw reflections and heard echoes of the gamut of human experience-loneliness and companionship, losses and rewards, regrets and hopes, man and God. He expressed the essence of his unique vision in a profusion of small poems. This collection of 244 poems-most of which have no more than eight lines-displays the best of Tabb's work, gathered into sets that showcase his various approaches to similar topics. With notes to help the reader with unfamiliar words and concepts, Long to Love and Memory brings John B. Tabb's gems out into the light once more and sets them anew for a new century.

Now he shares reflections upon these battles in the form of poetry and short stories. In his earthly life, at the age of six, he witnessed the horrific death of his father in a motorcycle accident. He then contracted pharynx polio, which left him unable to speak correctly. Prior to coming to earth, Taylor lived in the system of the star Kolob, past the Andromeda Galaxy. There he was a one-star general in the midst of a civil war. His loyalties were torn, and his hesitation in choosing sides led to his banishment to Earth, where only through dreams and visions is he able to understand his purpose. What’s more, while living an earthly life, he has been burdened with visions of female demons who tortured him and dragged him to the dungeons of hell—introducing him to the unseen world of spiritual warfare. He has turned to God for help, struggling to do right and to find love and affection along the way. In this collection of prose and verse, one man reflects on his journey through life not just on this planet but also in a distant galaxy and in the realm of the spirit.
