Book God Bless America Pack Of 25

Download or read book God Bless America Pack Of 25 written by Lindsay Terry and published by . This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Bless America It's as much at home being sung in stadiums packed with thousands of sports fans as it is in churches filled with reflective audiences. Regardless of the setting, "God Bless America" has fittingly become our nation's prayer and rallying cry since the events of September 11, 2001. God bless America, land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Through the night with a light from above. From the mountains to the prairies To the oceans white with foam, God bless America, my home, sweet home. God bless America, my home, sweet home. This "solemn prayer" for America has already been answered in countless ways and in millions of lives. We are so blessed to live, laugh, and love in freedom--freedom to enjoy all that our hearts hold so dear. God has generously blessed our nation, from the peaceful Pacific that bathes our western shores to the restless Atlantic in the east; from the massive Great Lakes in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south. The unique cities and towns that dot our land, the rolling hills, the spacious plains, the majestic mountains, and the colorful deserts all make up what we lovingly call "America." Truly this is our "home, sweet home." We are a diverse population, gathered from the four corners of the earth, working together to make America a unique and unparalleled nation in which to live. Approaching our country through New York Harbor and passing by "Lady Liberty" that has stood for more than a century, one can see the message she displays: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free . . . send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me." America offers to share its opportunities with people of every nationality and ethnic origin and invites them to live in this great land. But in the midst of these benefits we often fail to recognize the greatest blessing that we, and all people of the world, were created for--a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. And this can only be possible through true repentance. The Bible says, "Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5). And in Acts 17:30 we read, "God . . . commands all people everywhere to repent." The meaning of the word repent is "change your mind." It's doing a complete turnaround. Instead of going away from God, we must turn toward Him and accept His plan for our lives. Here's His plan... First: Recognize and confess to God that we all have sinned before Him. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him [Jesus] the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:6). Second: Realize that Jesus paid our sin-debt by dying on the cross. Three days later God raised Him from the dead. Jesus wants to save you from an eternity separated from God. "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18). "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him [Jesus] should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Third: Receive Christ as your personal Savior. "To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" from eternity in hell (Romans 10:13). If you will pray this short prayer and sincerely mean it in your heart, the Lord will hear you and make you one of His own children. You will be forgiven and receive God's gift of eternal life. And that's the most wonderful blessing from God you'll ever receive in this blessed country! Dear God, I confess I have sinned against You. I accept what Christ did for me on the cross as payment for my sins. Please cleanse my heart from my sins and save me right now. Amen.

After the attacks on September 11th, it was sung on the steps of the Capitol, at spontaneous memorial sites, and during the seventh inning stretch at baseball games, becoming even more deeply embedded in America's collective consciousness. In God Bless America, Sheryl Kaskowitz tells the fascinating story behind America's other national anthem. It begins with the song's composition by Irving Berlin in 1918 and first performance by Kate Smith in 1938, revealing an early struggle for control between composer and performer as well as the hidden economics behind the song's royalties. Kaskowitz shows how the early popularity of "God Bless America" reflected the anxiety of the pre-war period and sparked a surprising anti-Semitic and xenophobic backlash. She follows the song's rightward ideological trajectory from early associations with religious and ethnic tolerance to increasing uses as an anthem for the Christian Right, and considers the song's popularity directly after the September 11th attacks. The book concludes with a portrait of the song's post-9/11 function within professional baseball, illuminating the power of the song - and of communal singing itself - as a vehicle for both commemoration and coercion. A companion website offers streaming audio of recordings referenced in the book, links to videos of relevant performances, appendices of information, and an opportunity for readers to participate in the author's survey. Based on extensive archival research and fieldwork, God Bless America sheds new light on cultural tensions within the U.S., past and present, and offers a historical chronicle that is full of surprises and that will both edify and delight readers from all walks of life.

Persecuted as Jews, Izzy Baline and his family emigrated from Russia to New York, where he fell in love with his new country. He heard music everywhere and was full to bursting with his own. Izzy's thump-two-three, ting-a-ling, whee tunes soon brought him acclaim as the sought-after songwriter Irving Berlin. He ignited the imaginations of fellow countrymen and women with his Broadway and Hollywood numbers, crafting tunes that have become classics we still sing today. But when darker times came and the nation went to war, it was time for Irving to compose a new kind of song: A boom-rah-rah song. A big brass belter. A loud heart-melter. A song for America. And so "God Bless America" was born, the heart swelling standard that Americans have returned to again and again after its 1918 composition. This is the tale of how a former refugee gave America one of its most celebrated patriotic songs. With stirring, rhythmic text by Adah Nuchi and delightful, energetic art by Rob Polivka, readers will be ready to hum along to this exuberant picturebook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Pearl Harbor, Tin Pan Alley songwriters rushed to write the Great American War Song—an "Over There" for World War II. The most popular songs, however, continued to be romantic ballads, escapist tunes, or novelty songs. To remedy the situation, the federal government created the National Wartime Music Committee, an advisory group of the Office of War Information (OWI), which outlined "proper" war songs, along with tips on how and what to write. The music business also formed its own Music War Committee to promote war songs. Neither group succeeded. The OWI hoped that Tin Pan Alley could be converted from manufacturing love songs to manufacturing war songs just as automobile plants had retooled to assemble planes and tanks. But the OWI failed to comprehend the large extent by which the war effort would be defined by advertisers and merchandisers. Selling merchandise was the first priority of Tin Pan Alley, and the OWI never swayed them from this course. Kathleen E.R. Smith concludes the government's fears of faltering morale did not materialize. Americans did not need such war songs as "Goodbye, Mama, I'm Off To Yokohama", "There Are No Wings On a Foxhole", or even "The Sun Will Soon Be Setting On The Land Of The Rising Sun" to convince them to support the war. The crusade for a "proper" war song was misguided from the beginning, and the music business, then and now, continues to make huge profits selling love—not war—songs.

Book excerpt: "Carefully reviewing events from 1500 AD to 1830 AD, Coddington and Chapman provide a persuasive list of examples of how they believe God favorably intervened in the establishment of the United States. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with their arguments, you will be amazed at the number of times the margin between victory and defeat was determined by factors totally outside human control." -C. Craig Williford, PhD, president, Denver Seminary With the deep division in the United States today over religion and politics, the question of religion's decisive role in shaping America's founding and heritage remains a pivotal one. Dean Coddington and Richard Chapman bring a unique and highly informative contribution to this ongoing dialogue by examining religion's influence on early American history through such tools as probability analysis. Coddington and Chapman question whether religion and a desire for independence worked together to establish and sustain early America. They explore the connection through their comprehensive summaries of the American Revolution, the first six presidencies, the Louisiana Purchase, and other historically significant events up until 1830. They also take a closer look at an often-overshadowed component in the equation: the first and second Great Awakenings, religious revivals that effectively changed America's culture. With detailed examples, documented evidence, and thoughtful conclusions, God Bless America is a powerful addition to the growing collection of literature on this controversial topic.

Book Eisenhower

Book excerpt: Newly discovered and declassified documents make for a surprising and revealing portrait of the president we thought we knew. America’s thirty-fourth president was belittled by his critics as the babysitter-in-chief. This new look reveals how wrong they were. Dwight Eisenhower was bequeathed the atomic bomb and refused to use it. He ground down Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism until both became, as he said, "McCarthywasm." He stimulated the economy to lift it from recession, built an interstate highway system, turned an $8 billion deficit in 1953 into a $500 million surplus in 1960. (Ike was the last President until Bill Clinton to leave his country in the black.) The President Eisenhower of popular imagination is a benign figure, armed with a putter, a winning smile, and little else. The Eisenhower of veteran journalist Jim Newton's rendering is shrewd, sentimental, and tempestuous. He mourned the death of his first son and doted on his grandchildren but could, one aide recalled, "peel the varnish off a desk" with his temper. Mocked as shallow and inarticulate, he was in fact a meticulous manager. Admired as a general, he was a champion of peace. In Korea and Vietnam, in Quemoy and Berlin, his generals urged him to wage nuclear war. Time and again he considered the idea and rejected it. And it was Eisenhower who appointed the liberal justices Earl Warren and William Brennan and who then called in the military to enforce desegregation in the schools. Rare interviews, newly discovered records, and fresh insights undergird this gripping and timely narrative.
