Lewis defined Christianity, and being truly human, as a relationship between thepersonal Creator and his creation mediated through faith in his son, Jesus. The influential writer and mythologist Joseph Campbell had a different perspective, understanding Christianity as composed of mythical themes similar to those in other religious and secular myths. While accepting certain portions of the biblical record as historical, Campbell taught the theological and miraculous aspects as symbolic - as stories in which the reader discovers what it means to be human today. In contrast, Lewis presented the theological and the miraculous in a literal way. Although Lewis understood how one could see symbolism and lessons for life in miraculous events, he believed they were more than symbolic and indeed took place in human history. Book excerpt: In this biblical study, Menzies argues that the crucial eschatological issues Pentecostals face today are not centered on the specific nature of end-time chronology (e.g., premillennial or amillennial). Rather, the real issues have to do with retaining a sense of urgency and clarity regarding our mission, which requires proclaiming the reality of a future judgment and the centrality of Jesus' return as our "blessed hope." The former means that we must take seriously the early church's message that Jesus will return to judge the world, a key reason repentance and faith in Christ are crucially important. The latter calls us to live with a "sober optimism" that affirms both "the already" and "not yet" aspects of the kingdom of God. While we have hope for our mission of displaying and proclaiming the kingdom of God as Spirit-empowered believers, we also recognize that the political institutions of the inter-advent age are flawed, tend to become anti-Christ and oppressive, and will spiral downward (if not already there) shortly before the end. Menzies thus argues that Pentecostals in general and the Assemblies of God in particular should reassess doctrinal statements that call for a commitment to a premillennial perspective. His eight eschatological essentials, which flow out of his biblical critique of dispensationalism and premillennialism, affirm that we can and should face the future with hope. This is the case, not because our world is destined to get better in the short-term; but rather, because we and our world are headed towards God's ultimate goal, and, amazingly, we are called to be a part of His glorious, redemptive plan.
