Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Gad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of s9phistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

Download or read book Ring Theory Waterloo 1978 written by D. Handelman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-01-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ring theory conference took place at the University of Waterloo, 12-16 June 1978, and these are its proceedings. This conference was held as a part of the Summer Research Institute in Ring Theory, at Waterloo, sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society. In soliciting speakers, and contributors to the Proceedings, we attempted to represent those portions of ring theory which seemed to us interesting. There was thus considerable emphasis on lower K-theory and related topics, Artinian and Noetherian rings, as well as actions and representations of groups on rings. Regrettably, we could only obtain one paper in the mainstream of commutative ring theory, but we believe that the lack of quantity is more than made up for by the quality. We also took the liberty of including a survey of results in a field which we feel deserves more attention by ring theorists, C* algebras from an algebraic point of view.

Download or read book Cohen Macaulay Representations written by Graham J. Leuschke and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive treatment of the representation theory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay (MCM) modules over local rings. This topic is at the intersection of commutative algebra, singularity theory, and representations of groups and algebras. Two introductory chapters treat the Krull-Remak-Schmidt Theorem on uniqueness of direct-sum decompositions and its failure for modules over local rings. Chapters 3-10 study the central problem of classifying the rings with only finitely many indecomposable MCM modules up to isomorphism, i.e., rings of finite CM type. The fundamental material--ADE/simple singularities, the double branched cover, Auslander-Reiten theory, and the Brauer-Thrall conjectures--is covered clearly and completely. Much of the content has never before appeared in book form. Examples include the representation theory of Artinian pairs and Burban-Drozd's related construction in dimension two, an introduction to the McKay correspondence from the point of view of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, Auslander-Buchweitz's MCM approximation theory, and a careful treatment of nonzero characteristic. The remaining seven chapters present results on bounded and countable CM type and on the representation theory of totally reflexive modules.
Download or read book Ring Constructions and Applications written by Andrei V. Kelarev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the definitions of several ring constructions used in various applications. The concept of a groupoid-graded ring includes many of these constructions as special cases and makes it possible to unify the exposition. Recent research results on groupoid-graded rings and more specialized constructions are presented. In addition, there is a chapter containing open problems currently considered in the literature. Ring Constructions and Applications can serve as an excellent introduction for graduate students to many ring constructions as well as to essential basic concepts of group, semigroup and ring theories used in proofs.
Download or read book Noncommutative Noetherian Rings written by John C. McConnell and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprinted edition of a work that was considered the definitive account in the subject area upon its initial publication by J. Wiley & Sons in 1987. It presents, within a wider context, a comprehensive account of noncommutative Noetherian rings. The author covers the major developments from the 1950s, stemming from Goldie's theorem and onward, including applications to group rings, enveloping algebras of Lie algebras, PI rings, differential operators, and localization theory. The book is not restricted to Noetherian rings, but discusses wider classes of rings where the methods apply more generally. In the current edition, some errors were corrected, a number of arguments have been expanded, and the references were brought up to date. This reprinted edition will continue to be a valuable and stimulating work for readers interested in ring theory and its applications to other areas of mathematics.
Download or read book Skew Fields written by Paul Moritz Cohn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-07-28 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-commutative fields (also called skew fields or division rings) have not been studied as thoroughly as their commutative counterparts and most accounts have hitherto been confined to division algebras, that is skew fields finite-dimensional over their centre. Based on the author's LMS lecture note volume Skew Field Constructions, the present work offers a comprehensive account of skew fields. The axiomatic foundation and a precise description of the embedding problem are followed by an account of algebraic and topological construction methods, in particular, the author's general embedding theory is presented with full proofs, leading to the construction of skew fields. The powerful coproduct theorems of G. M. Bergman are proved here as well as the properties of the matrix reduction functor, a useful but little-known construction providing a source of examples and counter-examples. The construction and basic properties of existentially closed skew fields are given, leading to an example of a model class with an infinite forcing companion which is not axiomatizable. The treatment of equations over skew fields has been simplified and extended by the use of matrix methods, and the beginnings of non-commutative algebraic geometry are presented, with a precise account of the problems that need to be overcome for a satisfactory theory. A separate chapter describes valuations and orderings on skew fields, with a construction applicable to free fields. Numerous exercises test the reader's understanding, presenting further aspects and open problems in concise form, and notes and comments at the ends of chapters provide historical background.
