Grange and published by National Historic Parks and Sites Branch, Parks Canada. This book was released on 1982 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1965-66 excavations of the right redoubt and blockhouse at Fort Lennox National Park, Quebec are described in this report. The structural remains of the blockhouse and the features found in a test of the redoubt rampart and casemates are discussed. The archaeological features are correlated with historical plans and elevation drawings of the redoubt. The artificats, mostly from the debris of the later navy yard period (1813-34), are described and used to confirm the dating of the redoubt and blockhouse structures. The report provides data for comparative studies and may also serve as the basis for the planning of future excavations.

Book excerpt: Posted to Canada examines, for the first time, the immense body of work created by George Dartnell, a British army surgeon stationed in Canada from 1835 to 1844. Dartnell, an accomplished and popular surgeon, sketched more than 150 scenes of a pristine Canada of dense forests, clear lakes and rough-edged beauty during his nine-year posting – all of which form an important part of Canada’s pre-photographic visual history. In this, the first book on Dartnell, his vibrant depictions of rural Quebec and Ontario, Montreal, Quebec City, Penetanguishene, London, and Port Talbot are examined in great detail. Dartnell’s work offers rare and insightful glimpses of both the life of a surgeon in the early nineteenth century and the fledgling communities in which he served. among the rare scenes portrayed by Dartnell lare the first known depictions of St. Marys, Ontario, and maple-sugaring near Penetanguishene. Of the dozens of sketches reproduced in the book, many have been culled from private collections and never before displayed publicly.

Book Coarse Earthenwares from the Fortress of Louisbourg

Download or read book Coarse Earthenwares from the Fortress of Louisbourg written by Kenneth James Barton and published by National Historic Parks and Sites Branch Parks Canada. This book was released on 1981 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper identifies and attempts to evaluate 39 groups of wares derived from an examination of 58,737 sherds of pottery. These wares were discovered as a result of the extensive excavations that have taken place at Louisbourg in the past 20 years. They comprise coarse earthenwares only - the fine wares are the subject of separate attention. The French wares were probably derived from two sources, the west coast naval base of Rochefort and the south coast port and naval supply base of Marseilles. Both places attracted goods from some distance for northern French material occurs here as do northern Italian wares. The colonial wares are varied and suggest several sources; there are also ephemeral groups of wares from England and the Orient.

Book Glass of the British Military Ca 1755 1820

Download or read book Glass of the British Military Ca 1755 1820 written by Olive R. Jones and published by National Historic Parks and Sites Branch, Parks Canada. This book was released on 1985 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists and curators working on military sites have to address the problems of what kinds of objects were used by officers and men, how and when they were used and whether they were privately owned or supplied by the military. To help both these groups and for the interest of the general public an illustrated catalogue of glassware used by the British military in Canada from ca. 1755 to 1820 was compiled. The catalogue focusses on the Seven Years' War (1756-63), the American Revolution (1776-83) and the War of 1812-14. Categories used include drinking by type of beverage, storage and serving vessels, drinking glasses, wine glass coolers and finger glasses; eating vessels for condiments, serving vessels and desserts; canteens; health and personal care; and lighting. Material on ownership, sources of supply, and details on production are also included.
