Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Many-Storied Mountains: The Life of Glacier National Park In Glacier National Park the land is folded up. On the east, Chief Mountain, Curly Bear, and Rising Wolf break the prairie's hold. When the early French fur trappers saw these peaks glistening in the distance with summer-long snows and perpetual ice, they named this region the land of shining mountains. But for all the ice and snow that reflect the summer sun, the park's pres ent glaciers are but snowflakes compared to the mighty rivers of ice that carved this land. Glaciation, the magnificent sculptor, left its bold signature everywhere, and this park honors with its name the force that shaped it. Book Over the Trails of Glacier National Park Classic Reprint

Download or read book Over the Trails of Glacier National Park Classic Reprint written by Tom Dillon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Trails of Glacier National Park The park, as a whole, will never be a place for a coach-and-four or the honking automobile. An automobile road has bcen built along the level stretches eastof the mountains. It is a beautiful trip, but the inner recesses will ever be for the saddle and the sturdy pedestrian. When the aeroplane is a household attachment the mountain ponies will still be footing the Whiskey trail as they did two hundred years ago; and from their backs men and women will talk of that mysterious highway of a dim, distant past, which can be still traced to the jungle of Central America. There was a trail there for man and beast when the Romans were building roads to Britain. It was there when the first Hudson Bay fur-hunters peered through the passes, and since then many a hard pressed man has raced with death over it. Download or read book Flora of Glacier National Park Montana Classic Reprint written by Paul C. Standley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Glacier National Park, Montana Glacier National Park lies in northwestern Montana along the main range of the Rockies. It embraces an area of square miles, nearly all of which consists of masses of high mountains. On the north it adjoins British Columbia and Alberta; eastward stretch the prairies of the Blackfoot Indian Reservation, and to the west lie the mountains and heavy forests of the Flathead Valley. The Continental Divide runs along the crest of the chief mountain ridge. The drainage of the west (pacific) slope of the park is couse quently into the Columbia River, while on the east (atlantic) slope it is partly to Hudson Bay and partly to the Missouri River. From one point, Triple Divide Peak, the drainage is partly into each of the three systems. The highest peaks of the region reach an altitude of but little more than meters feet), but the elevation of the surrounding country is comparatively low (950 meters on 'the west slope and meters on the east slope), so that the mountains are quite as imposing in appearance as many of those in the southern Rockies which have a much greater elevation. Book Some Lakes of Glacier National Park Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Lakes of Glacier National Park Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Lakes of Glacier National Park During the summers of 1009. 1910. and 1911 I spent considerable time in the study of the lakes of the Glacier Park. The object was to make observations in regard to their depth, and, in the case of those lakes which do not now contain fish, to make a study of the microscopic life as a source of fish food, and, in addition, to make soundings to determine the depth of the water, so as to arrive at a fairly satisfactory conclusion of those lakes as producers of fish. Most of the larger lakes are connected with rivers through creeks which have no high falls, and which consequently admit fish from the rivers to the lakes. Many of the lakes are small. Some, however, are of considerable size and appear to be capable of supplying food for large numbers of fish. The method of taking soundings was as follows: An ordinary plumbers bob of lead or iron was used, with several hundred feet of heavy cord of the kind ordinarily used for trolling. This cord was passed through a piece of apparatus such as is used for measuring wire in installing telephones and telegraphs. All that was necessary was to adjust the apparatus on the edge of the boat and let the cord run out until the bottom was struck, then read the depth on the dial. The method of securing depth by this process is quite accurate if the water is still, and there is no question whatever about determining when the lead strikes the bottom of a lake. The life of the lakes was determined by using a surface net made of Xo. 20 silk bolting cloth of the finest mesh procurable, such as is used in flour mills. Attached to this was a little brass bucket with little windows, which were covered with the same kind of silk cloth. The water was screened through the net and the specimens collected in the little bucket at the end, the whole thing being shaped like a funnel. The bucket is detachable, by this means making it possible to collect the life from a large quantity of water into a small space and preserve it for future study. Book Through Glacier Park Seeing America First with Howard Eaton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Through Glacier Park Seeing America First with Howard Eaton Classic Reprint written by Mary Roberts Rinehart and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Glacier Park, Seeing America First With Howard Eaton There are many to whom new places are only new pictures. But, after much wandering, this thing I have learned, and I wish I had learned it sooner: that travel is a matter, not only of seeing, but of doing. It is much more than that. It is a matter of new human contacts. It is not of places, but of people. What are regions but the setting for life? The desert, without its Arabs, is but the place that God forgot. To travel, then, is to do, not only to see. To travel best is to be of the sportsmen of the road. To take a chance, and win; to feel the glow of muscles too long unused; to sleep on the ground at night and find it soft; to eat, not because it is time to eat, but because one's body is clamoring for food; to drink where every stream and river is pure and cold; to get close to the earth and see the stars - this is travel. Download or read book Wild Animals of Glacier National Park written by Vernon Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Animals of Glacier National Park: The Mammals, With Notes on Physiography and Life Zones Glacier National Park lies in northwestern Montana, along the main range Of the Rocky Mountains from the Canadian boundary south to the Great Northern Railway. From the rugged crest of the Continental Divide it descends on the east to the edge of the Great Plains, and on the west to the dense forests of the Flathead Valley. Its sinuous and spiny backbone forms one Of the roughest ranges on the Continent; and, while its highest peaks reach an elevation but little above feet, it has all the appearance of a more lofty range, for the timberline is low and its upper slopes and peaks reach far into the snow and glacier-laden arctic-alpine Zone. Its steep and jagged sides are deeply cut and furrowed by ancient glaciers, and the old glacial troughs are now filled by long, deep lakes of wonderful purity and beauty. Some of the smaller lakes are still milky from the grinding of the glaciers above them, but those farther from the ice throw back from transparent depths the deepest shades of blue and green. The long lake valleys on both sides of the range extend out between riblike lateral ridges almost as high and rugged as the dorsal crest of the range. In fact some of the highest peaks rise from these lateral ridges, while the main divide has been eaten through by the ice in notches that serve as the only available passes for present trails and future highways.
