Book excerpt: GIDEON RETURNS – A Damsel in Distress Book 3 Gideon Detective Series A detective with his whodunnit murder mystery or a chemistry professor seeking the structure of a new compound uses little of formal and logical modes of reasoning. It is times they stumble upon the correct explanation from a feeling in their gut and have just the right knack of seizing the opportunity when it comes within their reach. Sidney St. James originally wrote "Rosenthall" in 2016, Book 1 in the Gideon Detective Series. In 2019, his newest release, Gideon Returns – A Damsel in Distress, Vincent Gideon continued his infamous skills at investigation and was in the right place at the right time, twice. Or, at least a young German woman by the name of Abigail Hoffmann would tend to agree. Taking place in a seaside village in Oregon, a small fishing village, Black Rock Cove is the scene for lots of action and intrigue. Gideon hasn't had a case in months and is glad to receive word from the Portland Police Chief that a group of assassins and thieves were about to arrive in the States from Oldenburg, Germany. His job was simple enough. Go and apprehend the criminals and bring them to justice. He was asked to go to the docks to await the arrival of the Johann Dethardt, the large ocean liner that carried the four villains onboard, along with six hundred other passengers. However, when he went out to meet the ship, all Hell broke loose. Mystery, sex, and hot summer nights ensued for weeks after that. Is Gideon going to let the criminals go free the way he did Rosenthall, or is he going apprehend them with no loose ends to follow? A young and beautiful woman falls overboard and into the dark waters of the Pacific two miles offshore from Black Rock Cove. A knife to the chest probably caused her fall. Was she dead? Vincent Gideon thought so and fell out of his skiff as the body plunged almost hitting him in the small dinghy below. The woman who fell overboard says she is Abigail Hoffmann. Another woman who calls herself Abigail Hoffmann cashes in three hundred and fifty thousand dollars in bonds. Who is the real Abigail Hoffmann? Who is the murderer of Derek Schiller in Oldenburg, Germany? Does Rosenthall have something to do with this overall scheme to drag his nemesis back out of retirement? There are many twists and turns. The question you will ask yourself throughout the entire novel is, "Who is the real Abigail Hoffman?" Or, can Vincent Gideon put aside his romantic feelings for Abigail and focus on the facts before him? Will his desire for this beautiful woman let a resourceful killer off the hook, again? Murder and mystery throughout this novel are peppered with romance and humor in this fast-paced whodunit detective mystery series amidst the spectacular Oregon landscape and the Pacific's seaside sunsets.

Book Gideon s People 2 volume Set

Download or read book Gideon s People 2 volume Set written by Corinna Dally-Starna and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gideon’s People is the story of an American Indian community in the Housatonic Valley of northwestern Connecticut. It is based on some three decades of nearly uninterrupted German-language diaries and allied records kept by the Moravian missionaries who had joined the Indians at a place called Pachgatgoch, later Schaghticoke. It is supplemented by colonial records and regional political, social, and religious histories and ethnographies. As such, it represents the only comprehensive, thoroughly contextualized description of a Native people in southern New England and adjacent eastern New York for the mid-eighteenth century. The Moravians’ diaries report on the day-to-day activities in the community, including house-building, the production of material goods, hunting, fishing, and farming. We are told of marriages, births, deaths, disease, and the calamity of alcohol abuse. The unavoidable interactions with surrounding Indians and close-by colonial farmers and townspeople are offered in detail, along with the sometimes contentious relations with local and colonial authorities. And there is the omnipresence of the missionaries’ religious message to the Indians, frequently accepted and then tested by the inevitable temptations and, more than once, spurned. But we also learn of the struggles of the Moravians to feed and clothe themselves at a distance from their congregation in Bethlehem and their endeavors, often marked by conflict and deep personal pain, to lead their Native flock to the Lamb.

Book The Prodigal Son in English and American Literature

Download or read book The Prodigal Son in English and American Literature written by Alison M. Jack and published by Biblical Refigurations. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parable of the Prodigal Son is one of the best-known stories in the Bible. It has captured the imagination of commentators, preachers and writers. Alison M. Jack explores the reconfiguring of the character of the Prodigal Son and his family in literature in English. She considers diverse literary periods and genres in which the paradigm is particularly prevalent, such as Elizabethan literature, the work of Shakespeare, the novels of female Victorian writers, the American short story tradition, novels focused on the lives of ordained ministers, and the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop and Iain Crichton Smith. Drawing on scholarship from biblical and literary studies, this study demonstrates the remarkable potency of the parable in generating new, and at times contradictory, meanings in different contexts. Historical and literary criticism are brought into dialogue to explore this remarkably resilient and nimble character as he dances through drama, novels and poetry across the centuries.

Download or read book Theological Adventures written by Phillip Michael Garner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological Adventures began as a challenge to the teachers of The Institute for Global Outreach Developments International to provide me with those passages of Scripture they found the most difficult to produce an interpretive theology consistent with nonviolence and a nonviolent God. The allegorical method for dealing with OT violence has not led to a constructive theology capable of eradicating violence from the Christian tradition. However, genre identification of particular books enables a reader to discern the prejudicial nature of a book claiming to speak for God, e.g., Joshua as conquest narrative. Judges, as a reflection on violence and male-female relationships, qualifies as a “social critique” on Israelite society. This is wonderfully portrayed in the study of Samson as the archetypal strongman who represents Israel as a people. It is healthy to be honest enough about OT Scripture to require basic morality as a guide for reading its claims and stories. The gift of a moral conscience is a powerful voice for God’s image in us. I have found the OT to be consistent with the revelation of God in Christ Jesus when a person learns to read it correctly. The guiding interpretive lens is honesty about the intolerable violence sanctioned in the OT.

Book Doctor Detectives in the Mystery Novel

Download or read book Doctor Detectives in the Mystery Novel written by Howard Brody and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer a critical analysis of one variant of the mystery story or novel—the use of a physician as the major detective. There is little difference between a medical “case study” and a mystery story. The book reviews the works of major authors, from R. Austin Freeman, Helen McCloy, Josephine Bell, and H.C. Bailey, to Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, Aaron Elkins, and Colin Cotterill, with briefer reviews of minor authors. It also addresses historical (fictional) physician detectives, psychological detectives, and physician detective nonfiction. Physicians and health workers are avid readers of detective fiction and will welcome this volume, which addresses their specific interests. Its critical analysis of books that have long been viewed as central to detective fiction will also appeal to fans of the mystery story.

Book Chasing Gideon

  • Author : Karen Houppert
  • Publisher : New Press, The
  • Release : 2013-03-19
  • ISBN : 1595588698
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Chasing Gideon written by Karen Houppert and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 18, 1963, in one of its most significant legal decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Gideon v. Wainwright that all defendants facing significant jail time have the constitutional right to a free attorney if they cannot afford their own. Fifty years later, 80 percent of criminal defendants are served by public defenders. In a book that combines the sweep of history with the intimate details of individual lives and legal cases, veteran reporter Karen Houppert movingly chronicles the stories of people in all parts of the country who have relied on Gideon’s promise. There is the harrowing saga of a young man who is charged with involuntary vehicular homicide in Washington State, where overextended public defenders juggle impossible caseloads, forcing his defender to go to court to protect her own right to provide an adequate defense. In Florida, Houppert describes a public defender’s office, loaded with upward of seven hundred cases per attorney, and discovers the degree to which Clarence Earl Gideon’s promise is still unrealized. In New Orleans, she follows the case of a man imprisoned for twenty-seven years for a crime he didn’t commit, finding a public defense system already near collapse before Katrina and chronicling the harrowing months after the storm, during which overworked volunteers and students struggled to get the system working again. In Georgia, Houppert finds a mentally disabled man who is to be executed for murder, despite the best efforts of a dedicated but severely overworked and underfunded capital defender. Half a century after Anthony Lewis’s award-winning Gideon’s Trumpet brought us the story of the court case that changed the American justice system, Chasing Gideon is a crucial book that provides essential reckoning of our attempts to implement this fundamental constitutional right.
