Book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts

Download or read book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts written by Gabor Maté, MD and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “thought-provoking and powerful” study that reframes everything you’ve been taught about addiction and recovery—from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Myth of Normal (Bruce Perry, author of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog). A world-renowned trauma expert combines real-life stories with cutting-edge research to offer a holistic approach to understanding addiction—its origins, its place in society, and the importance of self-compassion in recovery. Based on Gabor Maté’s two decades of experience as a medical doctor and his groundbreaking work with people with addiction on Vancouver’s skid row, this #1 international bestseller radically re-envisions a much misunderstood condition by taking a compassionate approach to substance abuse and addiction recovery. In the same vein as Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts traces the root causes of addiction to childhood trauma and examines the pervasiveness of addiction in society. Dr. Maté presents addiction not as a discrete phenomenon confined to an unfortunate or weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs throughout—and perhaps underpins—our society. It is not a medical “condition” distinct from the lives it affects but rather the result of a complex interplay among personal history, emotional and neurological development, brain chemistry, and the drugs and behaviors of addiction. Simplifying a wide array of brain and addiction research findings from around the globe, the book avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting a thorough and compassionate self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness. Dr. Maté argues persuasively against contemporary health, social, and criminal justice policies toward addiction and how they perpetuate the War on Drugs. The mix of personal stories—including the author’s candid discussion of his own “high-status” addictive tendencies—and science with positive solutions makes the book equally useful for lay readers and professionals.

Book Core Emotional Addictions at the Root of Compulsive Behaviors

Download or read book Core Emotional Addictions at the Root of Compulsive Behaviors written by Caroline Eick and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While you may know something about your core beliefs or imprints - for example, that you carry the deep belief that you are not good enough, or that you can't count on anyone but yourself, or that you have to win at all cost or else someone will take advantage of you, and more - you may still find yourself repeating the same self-defeating behaviors of people-pleasing, of self-sabotage, of compulsively competing for things you don't even want, and so on. That's because of what keeps your beliefs about yourself alive in your neurological core: the energies of emotions to which you have become addicted. In this book, Caroline Eick explains how the very emotions we have been avoiding, repressing, projecting, or trying to control, we have become physically and psychologically addicted to, and that recurring self-defeating behaviors as well as substance and process addictions are in great part manifestations of patterns of emotional addictions. She offers a way to gain emotional peace by getting acquainted with emotions as energies that can be transmuted through attention and intention. Integrating spirituality and science, she offers a practical approach to sustained emotional sobriety.

Book Life Is as Simple as a Butterfly

Download or read book Life Is as Simple as a Butterfly written by Valentina Kirichilina and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So where has he gone, the red nosed man? The one with the misty washed light blue eyes? That man with the guilty little boyish grin? Today he was very still Lying silently, motionless, in his coffin gray Gray as the day In the funeral parlor Where a few gathered to pay their last respects To Rudolph my half brother Who was finally laid to rest in peace This is a true story of a soul that was bound and captured in a state of hopelessness, despair and poverty that unfortunately exists in this world even though there is help available for them. The desire for the addiction that consumes their life steals the reality of its consequences; eventually killing the participant; destroying any hope of a future for them with family and friends and life in general. The addiction becomes their reason for existence; the reason for waking up and the last satisfying desire before lying down to sleep. The addiction could be one of alcohol or drugs; often the root cause for crime, homelessness and promiscuity in order to provide the needed finances to feed their obsession. If you have never had to contend with someone addicted to a substance that alters the mind and eventually takes complete control of their life and will; it may be very difficult to comprehend the power these addictions can have. Many unfortunately, believe that they should have the ability to stop their addictions and pick up on what is considered to be a normal routine for living. Not so easily done, due to burn out and loss of normal brain cells and guilt. Satan has them chained, in his cunning and subtle work to steal, kill and destroy; he does not let them go free that easily once he has a legal door to enter in. It is a struggle, requiring a power greater than we have as humans, to be set free, the battle is of spiritual existence. Deliverance lies in the hands of the One who is greater and comes to give life, than he who comes to destroy, but, you need to submit and then you need to resist. It is a constant battle for the one who is trying to overcome, needing the support and tough love of family and friends who need to realize they must accept the things they cannot change; have courage to help change the things they can with wisdom to know the difference and inner strength to Let Go and Let God when they need to.

Book Take Control of Your Anxiety

Download or read book Take Control of Your Anxiety written by Christopher Cortman and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Non-Pharmaceutical, Evidence-Based Approach to Mastering Anxiety and Living a Productive, Well-Balanced Life Do you know what really triggers panic attacks? Are you aware of what thinking patterns create anxiety? Are you a chronic worrier? Have you ever self-medicated with alcohol or tranquilizers? According to mental health professionals, anxiety disorders have emerged as the common cold of mental illness. Every family is touched in some way or another by anxiety issues and, with ever-increasing frequency, diagnosable anxiety disorders. In Take Control of Your Anxiety--an easy-to-read, self-help book for the layperson--Drs. Cortman, Shinitzky, and O'Connor present the current understanding of anxiety: its genesis in the brain, its functions and contributions to human survival and growth, and its progression to pathology. Each of the five major anxiety disorders is featured in a chapter that explores its etiology, practical steps and exercises for successful resolution, and real-life case studies of patients who have overcome the disorder. The authors use some levity to teach their concepts, including Dr. Seuss-like poems, popular music parodies, and other easy-to-remember aids. A tool box of simple resources and self-help techniques is also included. Most importantly, the authors emphasize a non-pharmaceutical, evidence-based approach to mastering anxiety issues and living a productive, well-balanced life.
