Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Invasion I have attempted to demonstrate the absurdity of the suggestion that a German attack upon England could take the form of an international duel with the Powers looking on in a neutral ring. I have tried to show that the conflict would set Europe instantly ablaze, and that the flames could not be prevented from spreading far beyond the boundaries of one continent. I have suggested that a policy of wanton aggression would involve the German Empire in political and military perils which her wise and sober statesmen will surely not provoke. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who Goes There Who Goes There! Not with indifferent or with flippant hand Draw the curtains corner to disclose A rose, a leaf, a path through this sad land Untrampled yet by foes. Out of the Past - the Hearts last Hermitage - A wistful Phantom glides to me again Here where I pace that solitary cage They call, The World of Men. In vain she mirrors me the Golden Age; Vain is her Voice of Spring in wood and glen; The winter sunlight falls across my page Gilding a broken pen. Withered the magic gardens which were mine; Eden, in embers, blackens in the sun; Rooting amid crushed roses the Wild Swine Still root, and spare not one. Village and spire and scented forest path, Pastures and brooks, meadows and hills and fens Heard not the secret whispering in Gath There where the Gray Boar dens, Till burst his dreadful clamour on the Rhine And all the World shrank deafened by the roar Aghast before the out-rush of Wild Swine Led by the great Gray Boar. Book The English Invasion of Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Invasion of Germany Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Invasion of Germany It must be conceded that India absorbs men, a figure which, at the present moment, one would be less than ever inclined to reduce. The other colonies would absorb certainly in Ireland, where the Germans might be disposed to make some attempt, about men will need to be left; finally, in England itself, would be necessary, if only to guard the depots. There remain a good for the expeditionary army. But that is the figure of the future division of cavalry, 160 to 180 big guns, and, of auxiliary troops, perhaps in all men or thereabouts. To take the offensive against Germany with men! An untenable proposi tion, you will say, which will raise a smile in Berlin, whence such ill-natured comments issued at the time of the humiliating reverses of the Boer War. The proposition is by no means so untenable; and, in order to demonstrate the fact, it is only necessary carefully to lay down the various conditions under which an armed attack on the coast of Germany might successfully be effected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium and Germany: d104s and Documents We have collected in the present volume a certain number of texts, facsimiles, and other photographs of such a nature as to give an accurate picture of the heroic but deplorable situation of Belgium in the present war. Our country which existed by Right has been crushed by Might. But her honour remains, and with it remains the glory of the struggle in which she has sought to avenge her afflictions. After a superhuman effort on the part of her soldiers under the leadership of their King, and vigorous protests on the part of her Government and moral, civil and religious authorities. And while awaiting the day of reparation which must inevitably come, Belgium avails herself of her right to make clear to the world how loyal has been her spirit and how undeserved her sufferings. Indeed, it is her duty to do so. An enemy, strong beyond all measure, defying treaties and setting at nought the most solemn promises, has fallen upon her, laid her low and devastated her according to a pre conceived plan, and left her in ruins and drenched in blood, in the hope of obtaining by terrorism what he has been unable to obtain by threats and to compensate himself for the price he has had to pay for victory. Because he was checked in his advance successively at Liege, Antwerp and. The Yser, the invading monster thought by calumny to belittle the honour and the loyalty of Belgian Citizens. Book The German War Its Morals and Ends Classic Reprint

Download or read book The German War Its Morals and Ends Classic Reprint written by Samuel Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German War, Its Morals and Ends German Krieg has become the traditional method of German acquisition and aggrandisement. Indeed, kriegen in German colloquial speech denotes precisely this. And what does Germany want? She wants to make war and have other nations remain neutral, while she slays and destroys where she will. This is all that Germany asked of Great Britain, of France, of Russia, and of her quondam ally, the kingdom of Italy. Germany has not in good faith advanced one just reason for her waging of war. Her real reason is the prosecution of her premeditated plan to throw Europe into chaos for the purpose of adding to her territorial domains by the wreck and slaughter of her neighbors. This war is an atrocity made in Germany. It lacks even the elements of a fair game with its seditious spies, incendiary bombs, and submarine torpedoes by which Germany has pushed her ubiquitous nose into the affairs and security of other nations until she has made of herself an international offense. Do the Germans think by these means to cower and conquer the nations? Of course they cannot do it. They are only laying up for themselves a store of wrath and contempt that justly or unjustly will be visited upon their children's children, and from which they may only be redeemed by a repudiation of the creed and the craft of those who prepare war and contrive offensive engines of death and devastation. There will be a new mind in Germany by the time the cripples she has made in this war have disappeared from her sight. For the gentle German there will then be no more of glory in the Sieges Alee. The only excuse advanced by Germany for choosing war which is at all adequate as a justification for her belligerent trespasses, is that Germany was surrounded by a world of enemies who had avowed her destruction. And in the indigenous and radical tongue of the German, uncorrupted and unmollified as it has been, by the language and comity of Rome, an enemy is literally a fiend to be hated and destroyed. The Germans have certainly become fiends in their enmity toward the nations against which they have made war. And this fiendish animus, which seems to be a natural project of the German conscience and imagination, is by them freely ascribed to those nations which as belligerents are opposed to Germany in the present war. As I heard one simple and sincere German put it: "Sie wollen die deutsche Sprache ganz vernichten." It is true that the German grunts, and that his guttural speech has no consonance with the tongue of any other nation, but this does not justify the lie that the European powers were in a coalition to promote offensive measures for the destruction and partition of Germany, which lie has been reiterated by Germans in all degrees, from Kaiser to Knecht, until they seem to believe it to be the truth. And it is for this lie that Germany professedly wages this atrocious war, and fills earth and air and sea with fiends who wield the implements of death and rain. The Germans have made of war a religion, the professors of which for forty years have stood in rostrum and pulpit as the preceptors of the people. The whole people, in all degrees, have thus been impregnated with a culture of brutal materialism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany Vs, Civilization: Notes on the Atrocious War While this book is on the press, President Wilson has taken a firm stand, from which, we may hope, he will put an end to foreign arrogance and to domestic plotting and sedition. My references to his policy, written earlier, reflect the grave anxiety which many of us felt during the autumn and winter, and I let them remain because they bear witness to a very important element in the crisis. The long period of doubt over the President's intentions not only stifled American patriotism, but greatly encouraged the enemies at work in the United States. In this sketch I have purposely assembled a sufficient body of the characteristic doctrines of the shapers of Prussian policy, from Frederick the Great to General Bernhardi, to remind the reader of the essential German elements underlying the Atrocious War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Germans: As Others See Them Sir, - Judged by your writings, you appear to be one of the few sane men now in Germany and the only sober and independent Editor of a newspaper. There were one or two besides who wrote and who told the German people a part of the truth, but they have seemingly been silenced by your Government and have dis appeared. The Authorities have tried suppressing your paper Die Zukunft and are, I understand, again endeavouring to silence you. If they do not deprive you of your liberty you would possibly earn the gratitude of future generations were you able to wash from the eyes of your countrymen some more of the dust which your Government has thrown into them in dense clouds since it made war upon the world. Here are further points which I would suggest your bringing to their notice, some of which you have overlooked.
