Book Trafficking and Human Rights

Download or read book Trafficking and Human Rights written by Leslie Holmes and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human trafficking is widely considered to be the fastest growing branch of trafficking. As this important book reveals, it has moved rapidly up the agenda of states and international organisations since the early-1990s, not only because of this growth, but also as its implications for security and human rights have become clearer. This fascinating study by international experts provides original research findings on human trafficking, with particular reference to Europe, South- East Asia and Australia. A major focus is on why and how many states and organisations act in ways that undermine trafficked victims' rights, as part of ?quadruple victimisation'. It compares and contrasts policies and suggests which seem to work best and why. The contributors also advocate radical new approaches that most states and other formal organisations appear loath to introduce, for reasons that are explored in this unique book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Goldstuck - South Africa's urban legends guru - returns with a definitive guide to the hoaxes and rumours that have terrified and confused South Africans over the last twenty years. Why did an estimated 10 000 South Africans go on 'holiday' to Zimbabwe in April 1994? Who, exactly, decided that needles covered in AIDS-infected blood were being left on cinema seats in Cape Town in 1999? How did it come to be reported in several reputable newspapers that the South African government was considering cancelling Christmas in August 2004? Whatever happened to the ' tornado' that was supposed to descend on Johannesburg and Pretoria to devastating effect on 8 October 2007? Did the 100 000 women and children set to be trafficked into South Africa for the 2010 World Cup actually arrive? Have you ever cleared your driveway of 'colour-coded' rubbish, held back from flashing your lights at someone for fear of becoming a victim of a gang initiation rite or forwarded an email about child abduction to your friends and family? If so, have you ever wondered about the origins of these warnings? In this new book, Arthur Goldstuck not only traces the evolution of these urban legends but also digs deep into the human psyche to explain why it is that we are drawn into believing and passing on these warnings even when incontrovertible proof exists that they are false.

Book Panics without Borders

Download or read book Panics without Borders written by Gregory Mitchell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in a time of great panic about “sex trafficking”—an idea whose meaning has been expanded beyond any real usefulness by evangelicals, conspiracy theorists, anti-prostitution feminists, and politicians with their own agendas. This is especially visible during events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, when claims circulate that as many as 40,000 women and girls will be sex trafficked. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Brazil as well as interviews with sex workers, policymakers, missionaries, and activists in Russia, Qatar, Japan, the UK, and South Africa, Gregory Mitchell shows that despite baseless statistical claims to the contrary, sex trafficking never increases as a result of these global mega-events—but police violence against sex workers always does. While advocates have long decried this myth, Mitchell follows the discourse across host countries to ask why this panic so easily embeds during these mega-events. What fears animate it? Who profits? He charts the move of sex trafficking into the realm of the spectacular—street protests, awareness-raising campaigns, telenovelas, social media, and celebrity spokespeople—where it then spreads across borders. This trend is dangerous because these events happen in moments of nationalist fervor during which fears of foreigners and migrants are heightened and easily exploited to frightening ends.

Book Immoral Traffic Prostitution in India

Download or read book Immoral Traffic Prostitution in India written by V. Sithannan and published by eBooks2go, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. Sithannan, author of the title "Immoral Traffic - Prostitution in India", has marked it to the guardians of Law and Morals in India and the world. Standing firmly on the challenging locale of Indian Law and Legal System and drawing substance from his rich and varied experience as a Law Enforcement Officer of the Police Department of Tamil Nadu. Sithannan, in writing this monumental treatise, has fulfilled the longtime need of the Judicial Officers, Law Enforcement Authorities, Social Activists, NGOs, Gender Activists and the general public. In writing this volume, the academic quest of Sithannan has made him to cull out diverse facts and figures from various enactments, official documents and literature relating to Immoral Traffic and Prostitution. Further in this scholarly work, the author does not stop with expressing his sentiments of compassion for the Victims of Prostitution but he is concerned also with their rescue, rehabilitation and their decent placement in society, on a par with others. However, the agents, the brothel-runners and the traffickers in the trade of Prostitution come under his scathing attack and reprehensible condemnation, for these wolves, the world over , have made this ignoble profession into an industry, the third major lucrative global industry, next only to arms-smuggling and trade in narcotics. The Book contains 17 Chapters plus 3 Appendices. In these divisions, the author, talks about the types, causes and impact of prostitution, which result in various forms of harmful diseases. Further, a comparative picture of the legal status of Immoral Traffic in other countries is also given. Also, the author describes various instruments of Law, available for safeguarding the child victims of Trafficking and Prostitution. The Chapters on the Powers of the Police Officers and the Checklist(128) for Investigating Officers are path-breaking indeed! Judgment of cases on Immoral Trafficking and Prostitution, recorded in the Book, along with a list of the Powers of the Court, the Central and the State Governments would be a major source of reference material for the officials of Law and Governments. Apart from this, the 39 points on further role of NGO's and People's Organisations and other Social Activists in the field and would be of immense value, when they go for field work. The author has concluded the Book with suggestions and recommendations for arresting the menace of trafficking in persons and in this respect, he has made as many as 59 very valuable suggestions, besides giving 31 valid proposals and recommendations for effectively preventing child trafficking for purposes of prostitution and for engaging the child in worst forms of child labour. The Appendices have listed in a detailed way the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, in detail in three aspects. This Title is a scholarly one appearing at the most appropriate time, when the scourge of HIV/AIDS is catching up in a developing country like India, as wild fire, capable of halting its economic progress. The author has rightly written in his Preface that when a Law Enforcement Officer reads this Book, he would ensure conviction for the offenders; when an Advocate goes through the Title, he will see to the acquittal of his clients; and when a Judicial Officer reads this Book and pronounces judgments on cases like these, he is sure to pronounce judgments marked by social concern and compassion for the victims-women and children. No wonder that this book is a must for all the advocates, social activists, gender rights workers, NGOs and researchers on Gender Studies and other guardians of Law and Morals.

Book Human Trafficking

Download or read book Human Trafficking written by Marie Segrave and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human trafficking captured the attention of the global community well over a decade ago, inspiring multifarious international, national, regional and local responses. While formally recognized as one of the major threats associated with transnational organized crime, human trafficking remains an issue about which much has been written and yet little is known or supported by empirical evidence. The essays selected for this volume reflect four key areas of debate: the transnational organized crime framework; the data and research landscape; the implementation of anti-trafficking responses; and the articulation of alternative responses to human trafficking. These essays are written by well-known and more recent contributors to this field of research. The collection draws attention to contemporary arguments as well as recent empirical research, and points to the importance of contextualizing human trafficking within both the global and local setting. This volume reflects where human trafficking data, research and debate is currently located and where it is heading, and as such is of interest to academics, students, policymakers and practitioners.

Book The Pimping of Prostitution

Download or read book The Pimping of Prostitution written by Julie Bindel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines one of the most contested issues facing feminists, human rights activists and governments around the globe – the international sex trade. For decades, the liberal left has been conflicted as to whether pro-prostitution activists or abolitionists hold the correct view, and debates are ongoing as to who holds the key to the solutions facing the women and girls involved. Over the course of two years, Bindel conducted 250 interviews in almost 40 countries, cities and states, traveling around Europe, Asia, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and East and South Africa. Visiting legal brothels all around the world, Bindel got to know pimps, pornographers, survivors of the sex trade, and the women being sold by men classed as ‘business entrepreneurs’. Whilst meeting feminist abolitionists, pro-prostitution campaigners, police and government officials, and the men who drive the demand, Bindel uncovered the lies, mythology and criminal activity that shroud this global trade, and suggests here a way forward for the women seeking to abolish the oldest oppression. Informed by the lived human experience of those interviewed, this book will be of great interest to feminists, students, criminal justice advocates, criminologists and human rights activists.
