Book excerpt: In his time, Thomas Hill, a British-born painter who worked extensively in the American West during the second half of the nineteenth century, earned favorable comparison with Albert Bierstadt in the East Coast press, and received highest honors for landscape painting at the Philadelphia Centennial. By the late 1860s, his monumental canvases of Yosemite commanded five thousand dollars apiece and attracted national critical acclaim. Hill is generally associated with those paintings of Yosemite and other grand landscapes and his The Driving of the Last Spike. These large-scale compositions, however, incompletely represent Thomas Hill's talents and enthusiams. Some of the artist's finest achievements are realized in smaller paintings, classified as oil sketches, of subjects as diverse as Newport, Rhode Island, Lake Tahoe in California, and the Pacific Northwest. These modest works attest to Hill's powers of observation, his abilities to render immediate descriptions of his subjects, and his enchantment with his motifs. Oil sketches - usually made on board or paper and under sixteen-by-twenty inches - comprise a significant portion of Thomas Hill's work. Despite the fact that his name has been linked with luminism since the term was first coined, Suydam has not received the scholarly attention he deserves. With approximately 180 reproductions (eighty in color), this book considers Suydam's work in tandem with that of fellow Hudson River School artists such as Asher B. Durand, Frederic E. Church, and John F. Kensett and therefore contributes an important chapter to the history of American landscape painting. Significantly, Suydam's enduring legacy extends beyond his own creative output; his passionate commitment to art motivated his encouragement of emerging artists and his purchase of their paintings. When Suydam died he bequeathed ninety-two contemporary American and European paintings to the Academy, a gift that formed the nucleus of the Academy's permanent collection. Book excerpt: Today, outside a small group of traditional painters, art historians and dealers, Danish-American Impressionist/Realist painter Søren Emile Carlsen's (1848-1932) reputation is almost all but forgotten; an extreme contrast to the nearly "rock star" status he once held with the public and his peers during his lifetime. Carlsen was part of the circle of America's best known painters including William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919), Childe Hassam (1859-1935), and John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902). At his height, Carlsen's paintings commanded the equivalent of as much as $50,000 per canvas-in today's money-during the early 20th-century. Perhaps, it was the Dane's loner demeanor or his obsessive focus on the making of art that aided to his lost reputation with the public. But, it is because of these traits that Carlsen has reached near hero status among today's traditional painters and collectors.
