Book Simplicial Structures in Topology

Download or read book Simplicial Structures in Topology written by Davide L. Ferrario and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplicial Structures in Topology provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the subject. Ideas are developed in the first four chapters. The fifth chapter studies closed surfaces and gives their classification. The last chapter of the book is devoted to homotopy groups, which are used in short introduction on obstruction theory. The text is more in tune with the original development of algebraic topology as given by Henry Poincaré (singular homology is discussed). Illustrative examples throughout and extensive exercises at the end of each chapter for practice enhance the text. Advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students will benefit from this book. Researchers and professionals interested in topology and applications of mathematics will also find this book useful.

Book Piecewise Linear Structures On Topological Manifolds

Download or read book Piecewise Linear Structures On Topological Manifolds written by Yuli Rudyak and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of triangulations of topological spaces has always been at the root of geometric topology. Among the most studied triangulations are piecewise linear triangulations of high-dimensional topological manifolds. Their study culminated in the late 1960s-early 1970s in a complete classification in the work of Kirby and Siebenmann. It is this classification that we discuss in this book, including the celebrated Hauptvermutung and Triangulation Conjecture. The goal of this book is to provide a readable and well-organized exposition of the subject, which would be suitable for advanced graduate students in topology. An exposition like this is currently lacking.

Book Foundational Essays on Topological Manifolds Smoothings and Triangulations AM 88 Volume 88

Download or read book Foundational Essays on Topological Manifolds Smoothings and Triangulations AM 88 Volume 88 written by Robion C. Kirby and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Poincaré's time, topologists have been most concerned with three species of manifold. The most primitive of these--the TOP manifolds--remained rather mysterious until 1968, when Kirby discovered his now famous torus unfurling device. A period of rapid progress with TOP manifolds ensued, including, in 1969, Siebenmann's refutation of the Hauptvermutung and the Triangulation Conjecture. Here is the first connected account of Kirby's and Siebenmann's basic research in this area. The five sections of this book are introduced by three articles by the authors that initially appeared between 1968 and 1970. Appendices provide a full discussion of the classification of homotopy tori, including Casson's unpublished work and a consideration of periodicity in topological surgery.

Book Algorithmic Topology and Classification of 3 Manifolds

Download or read book Algorithmic Topology and Classification of 3 Manifolds written by Sergei Matveev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a thorough review of topics in 3-dimensional topology, derived from a decade of courses taught by the author. The author keeps the exposition to an elementary level by presenting the material mainly from the point of view of special polyhedra and special spines of 3-manifolds. The book culminates with the recognition procedure for Haken manifolds, and includes up-to-date results in computer enumeration of 3-mainfolds. The second edition adds new results, new proofs, and commentaries. Algorithmic Topology and Classification of 3-Manifolds serves as a standard reference for algorithmic 3-dimensional topology for both graduate students and researchers.

Book Introduction to Topological Manifolds

Download or read book Introduction to Topological Manifolds written by John Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-25 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to manifolds at the beginning graduate level, and accessible to any student who has completed a solid undergraduate degree in mathematics. It contains the essential topological ideas that are needed for the further study of manifolds, particularly in the context of differential geometry, algebraic topology, and related fields. Although this second edition has the same basic structure as the first edition, it has been extensively revised and clarified; not a single page has been left untouched. The major changes include a new introduction to CW complexes (replacing most of the material on simplicial complexes in Chapter 5); expanded treatments of manifolds with boundary, local compactness, group actions, and proper maps; and a new section on paracompactness.

Book The Topological Classification of Stratified Spaces

Download or read book The Topological Classification of Stratified Spaces written by Shmuel Weinberger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the theory for stratified spaces, along with important examples and applications, that is analogous to the surgery theory for manifolds. In the first expository account of this field, Weinberger provides topologists with a new way of looking at the classification theory of singular spaces with his original results. Divided into three parts, the book begins with an overview of modern high-dimensional manifold theory. Rather than including complete proofs of all theorems, Weinberger demonstrates key constructions, gives convenient formulations, and shows the usefulness of the technology. Part II offers the parallel theory for stratified spaces. Here, the topological category is most completely developed using the methods of "controlled topology." Many examples illustrating the topological invariance and noninvariance of obstructions and characteristic classes are provided. Applications for embeddings and immersions of manifolds, for the geometry of group actions, for algebraic varieties, and for rigidity theorems are found in Part III. This volume will be of interest to topologists, as well as mathematicians in other fields such as differential geometry, operator theory, and algebraic geometry.

Book Geometric Structures on Manifolds

Download or read book Geometric Structures on Manifolds written by William M. Goldman and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of geometric structures on manifolds which are locally modeled on a homogeneous space of a Lie group traces back to Charles Ehresmann in the 1930s, although many examples had been studied previously. Such locally homogeneous geometric structures are special cases of Cartan connections where the associated curvature vanishes. This theory received a big boost in the 1970s when W. Thurston put his geometrization program for 3-manifolds in this context. The subject of this book is more ambitious in scope. Unlike Thurston's eight 3-dimensional geometries, it covers structures which are not metric structures, such as affine and projective structures. This book describes the known examples in dimensions one, two and three. Each geometry has its own special features, which provide special tools in its study. Emphasis is given to the interrelationships between different geometries and how one kind of geometric structure induces structures modeled on a different geometry. Up to now, much of the literature has been somewhat inaccessible and the book collects many of the pieces into one unified work. This book focuses on several successful classification problems. Namely, fix a geometry in the sense of Klein and a topological manifold. Then the different ways of locally putting the geometry on the manifold lead to a “moduli space”. Often the moduli space carries a rich geometry of its own reflecting the model geometry. The book is self-contained and accessible to students who have taken first-year graduate courses in topology, smooth manifolds, differential geometry and Lie groups.

Book From Differential Geometry to Non commutative Geometry and Topology

Download or read book From Differential Geometry to Non commutative Geometry and Topology written by Neculai S. Teleman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a friendly introduction to non-commutative geometry. It studies index theory from a classical differential geometry perspective up to the point where classical differential geometry methods become insufficient. It then presents non-commutative geometry as a natural continuation of classical differential geometry. It thereby aims to provide a natural link between classical differential geometry and non-commutative geometry. The book shows that the index formula is a topological statement, and ends with non-commutative topology.

Book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds

Download or read book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds written by Hans U. Boden and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains expository papers that give an up-to-date account of recent developments and open problems in the geometry and topology of manifolds, along with several research articles that present new results appearing in published form for the first time. The unifying theme is the problem of understanding manifolds in low dimensions, notably in dimensions three and four, and the techniques include algebraic topology, surgery theory, Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten gauge theory,Heegaard Floer homology, contact and symplectic geometry, and Gromov-Witten invariants. The articles collected for this volume were contributed by participants of the Conference "Geometry and Topology of Manifolds" held at McMaster University on May 14-18, 2004 and are representative of the manyexcellent talks delivered at the conference.

Book The Topology of 4 Manifolds

Download or read book The Topology of 4 Manifolds written by Robion C. Kirby and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the classical theorems about simply connected smooth 4-manifolds: intersection forms and homotopy type, oriented and spin bordism, the index theorem, Wall's diffeomorphisms and h-cobordism, and Rohlin's theorem. Most of the proofs are new or are returbishings of post proofs; all are geometric and make us of handlebody theory. There is a new proof of Rohlin's theorem using spin structures. There is an introduction to Casson handles and Freedman's work including a chapter of unpublished proofs on exotic R4's. The reader needs an understanding of smooth manifolds and characteristic classes in low dimensions. The book should be useful to beginning researchers in 4-manifolds.

Book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds Surfaces and Beyond

Download or read book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds Surfaces and Beyond written by Vicente Muñoz and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a novel approach to differential topology. Its main focus is to give a comprehensive introduction to the classification of manifolds, with special attention paid to the case of surfaces, for which the book provides a complete classification from many points of view: topological, smooth, constant curvature, complex, and conformal. Each chapter briefly revisits basic results usually known to graduate students from an alternative perspective, focusing on surfaces. We provide full proofs of some remarkable results that sometimes are missed in basic courses (e.g., the construction of triangulations on surfaces, the classification of surfaces, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, the degree-genus formula for complex plane curves, the existence of constant curvature metrics on conformal surfaces), and we give hints to questions about higher dimensional manifolds. Many examples and remarks are scattered through the book. Each chapter ends with an exhaustive collection of problems and a list of topics for further study. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students who did take standard introductory courses on algebraic topology, differential and Riemannian geometry, or algebraic geometry, but have not seen their deep interconnections, which permeate a modern approach to geometry and topology of manifolds.
