Book Geodynamic Evolution of East Antarctica

Download or read book Geodynamic Evolution of East Antarctica written by M. Satish-Kumar and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geological correlations of East Antarctica with adjoining continents have been puzzling geologists ever since the concept of a Gondwana supercontinent surfaced. Despite the paucity of outcrops because of ice cover, difficulty of access and extreme weather, the past 50 years of Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions (JARE) has successfully revealed vital elements of the geology of East Antarctica. This volume presents reviews and new research from localities across East Antarctica, especially from Dronning Maud Land to Enderby Land, where the geological record preserves a history that spans the Archaean and Proterozoic. The reviews include extensive bibliographies of results obtained by geologists who participated in the JARE. Comprehensive geological, petrological and geochemical studies, form a platform for future research on the formation and dispersion of Rodinia in the Mesoproterozoic and subsequent assembly of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic to Early Palaeozoic.

  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-05-22
  • ISBN : 331905497X
  • Pages : 328 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book divides Antarctica into eight ice-free regions and provides information on the soils of each region. Soils have been studied in Antarctica for nearly 100 years. Although only 0.35% (45,000 km2) of Antarctica is ice-free, its weathered, unconsolidated material qualify as “soils”. Soils of Antarctica is richly illustrated with nearly 150 images and provisional maps are provided for several key ice-free areas.

Book Continental Reactivation and Reworking

Download or read book Continental Reactivation and Reworking written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2001 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of its bouyancy, continental crust is rarely subducted meaning that successive episodes of continental deformation imparts a complex geological character that is not found in younger oceanic lithosphere.

Book Antarctic Earth Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. L. Oliver
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1983
  • ISBN : 0521258367
  • Pages : 722 pages

Download or read book Antarctic Earth Science written by R. L. Oliver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth international symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences took place in Adelaide, South Australia during the week 16-20 August 1982. This volume contains a record of the centenary activities celebrating Sir Douglas Mawson and the one hundred and seventy-four papers that were presented by delegates for discussion over the five days. Sir Douglas Mawson was part of the first team to reach the magnetic South Pole, a leading geologist and scientific figure during the heroic age of of antarctic exploration. The papers presented during the symposium were divided into fifteen categories covering east and west Antarctica, marine, land and glacial geology, plate tectonics, islands, peninsulas, climatic change and Precambrian and Cenozoic era activity. The two hundred persons from sixteen countries who attended the symposium brought together a wide range of the most current expertise and research to share, of which this volume provides a record.

Book Crustal Evolution of India and Antarctica

Download or read book Crustal Evolution of India and Antarctica written by N.C. Pant and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proterozoic aeon involved at least three major continental readjustments. India and Antarctica appear in most models of supercontinent reconstructions, but their relative position has been the subject of debate. High-resolution petrological and geochronological data, especially from the Proterozoic mobile belts, provide the principal means of resolving this issue. The ice-covered nature of Antarctica allows only limited access to the rocks, and then only in coastal tracts, so detailed studies in more accessible Proterozoic terrains in India assume added significance. This volume, a follow-up to the XII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Science, Goa (a SCAR symposium), provides new data from selected locations in east Antarctica (Enderby Land and Dronning Maud Land) and from India, including the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt (EGMB), Chota Nagpur Gneissic Complex, the Khasi Hills and the Aravalli–Delhi Mobile Belt. The presented geochronological data, constrained by petrological studies, are expected to provide new insights, especially into the EGMB–east Antarctica connection and the rate of continental readjustments in the post-Rodinia break-up.

Book International GeoMaud Expedition of the BGR to Central Dronning Maud Land in 1995 96

Download or read book International GeoMaud Expedition of the BGR to Central Dronning Maud Land in 1995 96 written by Hans-Jürgen Paech and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume cover the orthogneisses and the Pan-African granitoids and charnockites, in addition to studies on the regional metamorphism and the structural evolution of central Dronning Maud Land (DML). The results presented in this volume fill gaps in the knowledge of the geological structure and history of cDML and thus find interest in the Antarctic research community.
