Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Topography and Geology of Great Bear Lake and of a Chain of Lakes and Streams Thence to Great Slave Lake The Wrigley reached Fort Simpson on the 2ist of May, and I re trriwsti'ort mained here a week to make ready our outfit for the summer's trip and Slimsstm. To obtain more information concerning the Bear Lake country. We set out from Fort Simpson on the 28th of hlay in our own canoe, the swift current of the Mackenzie so materially aiding our paddles that we reached Fort Wrigley in a day and a half. At Rocherslui-trempe hal'eau, about 80 miles below this pent, we halted for a few days on our journey in order to make a short trip into the interior. The rocks of this mountain have been so well described by l r. Mcconnell of the Geological Survey, that it is unnecessary for me toelahornte his account. Arriving at Fort Norman on the 3rd of June, we learned that Bear m, ya! At Lake l't'l' had brohm up only the clay before and that indium; t'olll t'ort Norman. Ing down from Great Bear lake announced that travelling there oron the river would be quite impossible for three weeks to come. Llere, therefore, I again occupt myself in making short trips into the ln terior and by rearranging my plans and outfit. At Fort Norman I Md engaged two more men. Charles Camsell and John Sanderson, the (mama, former agreeing to help me as much as possible in scientific work and the latter to act as guide and interpreter around G eat Bear lake. Book Geology of the Northern Part of the East Shore of Great Bear Lake N W T

Download or read book Geology of the Northern Part of the East Shore of Great Bear Lake N W T written by Robert Mulligan and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The sedimentary, volcanic and intrusive rocks of an area in the northern part of the Canadian Shield are described. Particular reference is made to the relative ages of these formations* their structures, and to major faults. The field evidence suggests that a red feldsparporphyry intrusive is younger than the granite which intrudes the volcanic porphyries. This, and to some extent the stratigraphic sequence proposed differ from previous findings. The distribution and attitudes of the sedimentary and volcanic formations indicate a flexure in a regional northv/esterly-trending open fold- Two sets of right-hand faults strike northerly and northeasterly respectively. The latter are marked by large displacements and in places by giant quartz veins. The horizontal movement along one such northeasterly-trending fault is determined as three to four miles. The age relations and causes of faulting are discussed." --

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of the Controller Bay Region, Alaska When Bering led the first exploratory voyage across the North Pacific in 1741, Cape St. Elias was his first landfall and either Kayak or Wingham Island his first landing place. The first explora tion of this province thus dates back to the beginning Of Alaskan history. But this beginning, although of historical interest, was of little importance, for Bering merely sent boats ashore for water, and then went back across the Pacific without extending his explorations or even touching on the mainland.
