Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C2 written by Ross L. Sherlock and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of a mapping program in the vicinity of the Boston gold deposit near Hope Bay, south-west Nunavut. It first reviews the regional geology, the granitoid rocks of the Hope Bay volcanic belt, and their contact relationships with the belt. It then focusses on the geology of the deposit area, with descriptions of the rock types, the geologic structures, and the gold mineralization. Finally, implications of the findings for mineralization in other areas of the Hope Bay belt are discussed.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to document results of the electrical resistivity characteristics of rocks from the Astarte River Formation, central Baffin Island, for use in interpreting ground electromagnetic surveys that have been conducted in the central Baffin region. Results are presented for five black graphitic shale samples subjected to three-dimensional electrical resistivity measurements & subsequent data analysis. The samples were selected to characterize the resistivity of the Formation and to determine the effect of strong foliation containing porous layers & of disseminated sulphide mineralization oriented parallel to foliation.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results from uranium-lead dating of plutonic, volcanic, & sedimentary rocks from the Southern Indian Lake to Granville Lake area of northern Manitoba. The samples analyzed were collected from a range of tectonostratigraphic settings and provide constraints on the age of volcanism & sedimentation in the Rusty Lake Belt, on the deposition of fluvial to littoral facies sediments in the Partridge Breast Belt, and on the emplacement of orthogneiss and plutonic rocks.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolostone mounds over 200 metres thick and over four kilometres across developed in deep water during uppermost Arctic Bay Formation shale deposition in the north-west Milne Inlet Graben on northern Baffin Island. This paper describes the geometry of hitherto unrecognized mounds that have been identified from field work in five areas: the Saint Georges Society Cliffs near Arctic Bay; beneath the Nanisivik lead-zinc deposit; Red Rock valley; Magda Lake; and Bellevue Mountain. Their lithology, lateral facies relations, and internal composition are described and an interpretation of the origin & growth of the mounds is offered. Finally, implications of mound growth & distribution for the fault-related flow of mineralizing fluids and consequent base-metal deposition are discussed.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses previous interpretations of the origin of planar laminae and breccia networks found in carbonate rocks of the Society Cliffs Formation, which hosts numerous base metal showings and the Nanisivik zinc-lead deposit on northern Baffin Island. Field observations concerning the sedimentology of the Society Cliffs basinal laminite and the types of breccia found in laminite are presented and a new interpretation of the origin of these rocks is offered. Implications of the findings for oceanic chemistry & base metal mineralization are briefly discussed.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to document results of pore size analyses of rocks from the Astarte River Formation, central Baffin Island, for use in interpreting ground electromagnetic surveys that have been conducted in the central Baffin region. Results are presented for pore size distribution analyses of four black graphitic shale samples subjected to mercury injection porosimetry measurements. These measurements are essential for the electrical mechanism analysis of these samples. Porosity values are compared to those typical of mudstone or crystalline rocks.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Milne Inlet Graben on northern Baffin Island contains unmetamorphosed sedimentary & volcanic rocks. The middle part of the Graben includes the Society Cliffs Formation, which hosts numerous base metal showings and the Nanisivik lead-zinc deposit. Known mineralization in the Graben is predominantly limited to distinct lithofacies & stratigraphic levels of that formation. Understanding the formation's composition, origin, and lateral facies relations may be critical to determining constraints on mineralization. Existing stratigraphic nomenclature for the Formation, based on a type section in the north-west part of the Graben, does not adequately characterize the lateral variations in facies from the north-west to south-east and does not account for the Formation's evolution over time. This paper critically reviews previous research on the Formation, which has focussed on the south-east part of the Graben, and fills in the gaps in knowledge about the Formation's sedimentology & stratigraphy. It describes the distribution & lateral relations of the various lithofacies and interprets the characteristics of the basins in which they were originally deposited.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A well-exposed section about 250 metres wide below the high water line of the Jennings River, Teslin Lake map area in northern British Columbia shows part of the Teslin Fault and provides an opportunity to constrain the fault's kinematic history by direct ground observations. This report describes preliminary structural observations of this section of the Teslin Fault, including the rock types involved, mylonitic & ultramylonitic structures, and deformation. Indications of two main episodes of shearing are discussed.

Book excerpt: The Aylmer Lake volcanic belt, located north of the north-east end of Great Slave Lake, defines an upward-facing structural dome intruded in its core by a number of granitoid plutons and overlain by multiply folded metaturbidite units. This paper provides a summary of field observations of the belt from the 2000-01 field seasons and incorporates preliminary geochemical data from samples collected in 2000. Information is included on rock types & stratigraphic relationships in the Aylmer Lake area, on whole-rock analyses of a representative selection of rock types from the belt, and on structural & metamorphic elements of the north-east Walmsley Lake area (located just west of the belt).

Book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2000 C23

Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2000 C23 written by Anthony Davidson and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of remapping the Mountain Grove pluton, situated in the Sharbot Lake domain in the central part of the Central Metasedimentary Belt, Grenville Province, Ontario. The pluton, previously mapped as a single body of gabbroic rock, is now described as comprising two distinct intrusions. The paper begins with an overview of its geologic setting, then describes the lithology of the two intrusion units, associated dykes, and neighbouring intrusions & plutons. The geochronology of the pluton and its mineral deposits are also briefly noted.
