Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of Geodesy: Appendix No. 16, Report for 1887 During the progress of the compiling, various overtures were made by institutions desiring to become the source from which the completed work should emanate, but it was deemed only proper that it should be published in the country which witnessed its inception and fostered its growth. Therefore it is with pardonable pride that the compiler sees the results of his labors issuing from an institution of his own country, which throughout the world is the recognized advance guard in geodetic science. Download or read book Geodesy What s That written by Irene K. Fischer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geodesy (the measurement of the size and shape of the earth), fascinating since the time of Erathosenes, became a basic science for the space program. Irene Fischer was a leader in the construction of the World Geodetic System (has an Earth reference ellipsoid named in her honor) when it was still being done by surveyors, piecing together terrestrial, gravitational and astronomical data. By the 1970s, satellite geodesy and marine geodesy were just coming into their own. Using her career, Fischer revels in explaining how the science unfolded, and how misunderstandings occur across scientific fields, e.g., why the "standard ocean" and the geoid do not easily translate across the fields of oceanography and geodesy. Her account should appeal to those writing the history of women in science. Government science, too, is less well studied than academic science even though some fields, such as geodesy, were always government led. Fischer provides food for thought, as well, to those who claim to study the management of science in bureaucratic settings different from those of industry or academia. Peppered among these themes are Fischer's solutions to historical mysteries such as why Columbus' used a figure for the size of the earth's circumference that was so much smaller than Erastothenes' or Posidonius' (with the added benefit of making it easier to persuade his patrons).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a systematic overview of the fundamental theories, frameworks and methods for measurement and evaluation applying to geodesy, though the contribution of geodetic spatial techniques for positioning and for establishing the gravitational field receives particular emphasis. These methods have led to a change in the setting up of geodetic basic networks that is also of importance in practical terms; for interdisciplinary geodynamics research geodesy can likewise make major contributions with their assistance. The current status of geodesy is illustrated by numerous examples from survey, evaluation and analysis; an extensive literature list makes further study all the easier. The book conveys an extensive overview of the profound changes that geodesy has undergone in the past twenty years.

  • Release : 2012-05-29
  • ISBN : 3110250004
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book Geodesy written by Wolfgang Torge and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this textbook has been thoroughly revised in order to reflect the central role which geodesy has achieved in the past ten years. The Global Geodetic Observing System established by the IAG utilizes a variety of techniques to determine the geometric shape of the earth and its kinematics, the variations of earth rotation, and the earth’s gravity field. Space techniques play a fundamental role, with recent space missions also including gravity field recovery. Terrestrial techniques are important for regional and local applications, and for validating the results of the space missions. Global and regional reference systems are now well established and widely used. They also serve as a basis for geo-information systems. The analysis of the time variation of the geodetic products provides the link to other geosciences and contributes to proper modelling of geodynamic processes. The book follows the principal directions of geodesy, providing the theoretical background as well as the principles of measurement and evaluation methods. Selected examples of instruments illustrate the geodetic work. An extensive reference list supports further studies. The book is intended to serve as an introductory textbook for graduate students as well as a reference for scientists and engineers in the fields of geodesy, geophysics, surveying engineering and geomatics.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this well-known textbook, first published in 1980, has been completely revised in order to adequately reflect the drastic changes which occured in the field of geodesy in the last twenty years. Reference systems are now well established by space techniques, which dominate positioning and gravity field determination. Terrestrial techniques still play an important role at local and regional applications, whereby remarkable progress has been made with respect to automatic data aquisition. Evaluation methods are now three-dimensional in principle, and have to take the gravity field into account. Geodetic control networks follow these developments, with far-reaching consequences for geodetic practice. Finally, the increased accuracy of geodetic products and high data rates have significantly increased the contributions of geodesy to geodynamics research, thus strengthening the role of geodesy within the geosciences. The present state of geodesy is illustrated by recent examples of instruments and results. An extensive reference list supports further studies.
