Book The Harvard List of Books in Psychology

Download or read book The Harvard List of Books in Psychology written by Harvard University and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harvard List of Books in Psychology was first compiled in the 1930s, when each student in the department enjoyed the luxury of an individual tutorial. Together tutor and student could map out a course of reading. By 1938, the list had proved so useful that its 349 titles were annotated and printed, though mainly for local consumption. Growth of an outside demand from students, librarians, and the reading public led to a supplement in 1944 and a number of successive editions bearing the present title. The present edition updates the List without expanding it beyond useful size: for each new title the compilers have faithfully tried to delete one, and new entries account for almost half of the present total of 744. Each title is annotated with descriptive and evaluative material.

Book The Heredity of Behavior Disorders in Adults and Children

Download or read book The Heredity of Behavior Disorders in Adults and Children written by D.L. Pauls and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current trends in morbidity suggest that by the beginning of the twen ty-first century, psychiatric illness may become the most pressing problem in public health in many of the advanced countries. As ably demonstrated by Vandenberg, Singer, and Pauls, the principal identifia ble etiology of the major psychiatric disorders is heredity; if progress is to be made in prevention and treatment of these disorders, it may have to come from improved understanding of their inheritance. A relentless increase has been observed in the frequency of mood disorders, primarily major depression but also manic-depressive ill ness, appearing earlier and more frequently in each age cohort born since (approximately) 1940. Because major depression is a recurrent disorder, whose episodes increase in frequency with age, the number of observed depressions can be expected to increase dramatically as these people reach middle and old age. The rate of suicide has also increased enormously, according to birth cohort. Starting with people born around 1935, the rate of suicide between 15 and 19 years of age has increased more than 10 times from the earliest to the most recent birth cohorts. What is not clear is if there will be a compensatory reduction in suicide rate as this cohort ages, because people likely to commit suicide will have done so earlier, or if this presages a general increase in suicide, comparable to the increase in mood disorders and perhaps a function of them.

Part 2 reports on emotional and learning disorders, such as autism, while Part 3 applies cognitive science to educational and mental health, as well as to settings such as the classroom, rehabilitation centre or doctor’s office.

Book Research in the Schizophrenic Disorders

Download or read book Research in the Schizophrenic Disorders written by R. Cancro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1957, Stanley R. Dean proposed the creation of a founda tion on schizophrenia to a group of friends. The purpose was to bring the illness of schizophrenia before the public's attention and out of the shameful anonymity in which it was buried. Stanley Dean recognized the major public health importance of this illness and was determined to have an impact on it during his lifetime. By December of that year, the decision was made to create an organization called Research in Schizophrenia Endowment (RISE). Within less than two months articles of incorporation for RISE were issued by the State of Connecticut. By the latter part of March 1958, Dean was successful in getting Congress to provide $1,300,000 for research into schizophrenia. This was the first time that Congress had targeted funds specifically for research on this disorder. Within a year, by April 1959, Dr. Dean was instrumental in getting Congress to increase its appro priation to the NIMH by more than $8,000,000 with the specific instruction that approximately one-half of the total research funds of the NIMH be used for projects relating to schizophrenia. In the spring of 1960, RISE relinquished its corporate charter and became an integral part of the Research Foundation of the National Association for Mental Health. This merger occurred before RISE had implemented its planned annual award program for outstanding research in schizophrenia. Several members of the Board of Directors of RISE, under the leadership of Dr. James G.

Book Psychiatry and Psychology in the USSR

Download or read book Psychiatry and Psychology in the USSR written by Samuel Corson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at a professional audience of psychiatrists, psychologists, and educators, as well as Slavic studies scholars and teachers and intelligent lay readers. It would be presumptious to attempt to cover the entire field of Soviet psychiatry and psychology in one modest volume. During the past several decades there has been a remarkable flourishing and diversification of research in psychology and psychiatry in the USSR. What we have attempted to do in this symposium is to present a constructive critical overview of certain limited areas by arranging an interchange of observations and ideas between several American scientists knowledgeable in these fields and a psychologist and psychiatrist who obtained their education and working experience in the USSR. We hope to be able to expand such symposia in the future, so as to cover other important areas of these disciplines. This monograph presents an eyewitness account of Pavlov by W. Horsley Gantt, one of three surviving students of Pavlov, and, to the best of my knowledge, the only American who actually studied and worked with Pavlov. It is a measure of Dr. Gantt's devotion to the development of scientific psychiatry that he went to the USSR to spend six years in Pavlov's laboratory at a time of extreme economic hardship and political turmoil in that country and in the face of having to master a difficult language. In his presentation, Dr.

Book Perspectives in Abnormal Behavior

Download or read book Perspectives in Abnormal Behavior written by Richard J. Morris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Abnormal Behavior is a compilation of articles in the field of abnormal psychology. An article titled the Myth of Mental Illness discusses the different signs in determining a brain disease. The second article is about the diagnoses of schizophrenia. A section of the article talks about the misconception the public have about the disease and the symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Another part of the second article defines behaviors that are perceived as deviant. The third article in the book is addressed to the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses and covers the advantages and disadvantages of these diagnoses. The subsequent article rejects the method of psychiatric diagnoses and emphasizes the importance of using behavioral analysis in treating patients. The said article enumerates the problems in the diagnostic systems. Topic such as the methods of data collection for a functional analysis is also discussed. The book will be a useful tool for psychologists and academic students.
