It draws upon industrial organization (IO) economics to derive five forces that determine the competitive intensity and therefore the attractiveness of an industry. Attractiveness in this context refers to the overall industry profitability. An "unattractive" industry is one in which the combination of these five forces acts to drive down overall profitability. A very unattractive industry would be one approaching "pure competition," in which available profits for all firms are driven to normal profit. This analysis is associated with its principal innovator Michael E. Porter of Harvard University. This updated and expanded second edition of Book provides a user-friendly introduction to the subject, Taking a clear structural framework, it guides the reader through the subject's core elements. A flowing writing style combines with the use of illustrations and diagrams throughout the text to ensure the reader understands even the most complex of concepts. This succinct and enlightening overview is a required reading for all those interested in the subject . We hope you find this book useful in shaping your future career & Business.

Book Case Interview Frameworks

Download or read book Case Interview Frameworks written by Robert Steiner and published by Robert Steiner. This book was released on 2015-08-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You often hear in discussions about case interviews that you should not use standard business frameworks and concepts at all, because they just don’t fit to the specific case question and interviewers don’t like it when candidates use standard frameworks to solve cases. However, when challenging this shallow, generalized and popularized statements, there aren’t any of those arguments remaining on the table. It is most definitely true that you can't crack a realistic interview case by relying solely on standardized frameworks - but all those business frameworks and concepts are extremely helpful templates which you can and even should put into your toolbox and use them whenever appropriate (if not to the full extent, at least partly!). Such a standard business framework is just a tool - and the tool itself is rarely good or bad, it mainly depends on how and for which purpose you use it. With this book, you achieve all of the following: - Get a profound overview of the most important business concepts and frameworks needed in consulting case interviews. - Really understand those business concepts and frameworks, instead of possessing only knowledge of dangerous half-truths. - Impress your interviewer on how structured and therefore client-friendly you tackle tough case interview questions. - Quickly learn how to actually apply those frameworks to concrete business situations, instead of just having a shallow theoretic knowledge of them. - Be more MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) in setting up your overall case structure at the beginning of your case interview. - Better structure your answers to particular questions later on in your case interview, again being more MECE. - Save tons of time by having high-quality content from 10+ years of consulting and interivew experience together in one single book. - Significantly reduce the risk of losing a tier-1 consulting firm job offer because you were not structured enough in your interview (and we all know how important it is to be ABS - Always Be Structured).

Book The Supply Chain Differentiation Guide

Download or read book The Supply Chain Differentiation Guide written by Erik Hofmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of supply chain management has increased over the last few decades. Today, entire supply chains are competing with each other instead of individual companies. As such, supply chain management has become a way for companies to set themselves apart from competing companies and their supply chains. Interestingly, supply chain management mainly focuses on efficiency-oriented topics rather than effectiveness-driven issues, in particular the design of supply chains from manufacturing sites downstream, instead of upstream from the customer. The Supply Chain Differentiation Guide offers a modern approach to supply chain management. While for many years “one-size-fits-all” approaches to supply chain management were very common, the current efforts of managers and academics alike focus on the simultaneous management of multiple supply chains. Despite the interest of the business sector in the management of multiple supply chains, academia has largely neglected this topic to date. The Supply Chain Differentiation Guide addresses this shortcoming, introducing both established and cutting-edge management methods to the context of supply chain differentiation and providing inspirations for how to improve corporate operations.

Book Backward innovation An opportunity to extend product life cycles on a global basis

Download or read book Backward innovation An opportunity to extend product life cycles on a global basis written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-07-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, language: English, abstract: With mostly saturated markets in developed countries, the markets of the emerging economies constitute the major growth opportunity for most multi-national corporations (MNCs) today. But tapping into the potential of these markets is no easy task. Simple export strategies with little or no responsiveness to local needs failed numerous times. MNCs often have the wrong mindsets to be successful in these markets, assuming these markets will go through the same process of development as the western markets, only ten or twenty years behind. Product policies therefore concentrate on dumping old and outdated products in these markets. Many MNCs had problems with this way of approaching emerging markets, as they have unique requirements that need to be considered. Backward innovation, the deliberate simplification of existing products, can be seen as one strategy that responds to those needs and can be very successful in these emerging markets. Backward innovation falls back on using existing, but modified products; a successful use of this strategy may well be a way to extend the life of a product that finds itself already in the maturity or declining stage of its life cycle in its home market. To examine how backward innovation is used in global (particularly in emerging) markets and how successful it is in extending the life of a product will be the main focus of this paper.

Book Manufacturing Strategy

Download or read book Manufacturing Strategy written by John Miltenburg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-03-09 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To stay competitive and meet market expectations in a global economy, both domestic and foreign companies must realign their manufacturing processes, make improvements, and increase their manufacturing capabilities. With large numbers of employees working in a network of domestic and foreign facilities, production processes are as varied as the products being produced. Manufacturing managers need a manufacturing plan or strategy that will bring structure to this complex environment. In Manufacturing Strategy: How to Formulate and Implement a Winning Plan, 2nd Edition, John Miltenburg offers a sensible and systematic method to: (1) evaluate domestic and foreign factories and international manufacturing and (2) plan the appropriate manufacturing strategy to be first in the market. Incorporating comments and suggestions from managers who used the first edition of Manufacturing Strategy, John Miltenburg expands and improves on his focus in the areas of: International Manufacturing — where the focus is on a company's international network of factories; Competitive Strategy — where managers must understand the role manufacturing strategy plays in their company's business strategy; and Manufacturing Programs — showing how programs such as quality management, six sigma, agile manufacturing, and supply chain management fit within the manufacturing strategy. Manufacturing Strategy gives managers a common language for dealing with manufacturing problems at both strategic and operational levels. It improves communication between manufacturing managers and those outside manufacturing (who will now have a better understanding of what manufacturing can and cannot do).
