Book Principles of Hydraulic Management of Coastal Lagoons for Aquaculture and Fisheries

Download or read book Principles of Hydraulic Management of Coastal Lagoons for Aquaculture and Fisheries written by John M. Miller and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1990 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is prepared for fisheries biologists, managers and administrators concerned with lagoon fisheries and aquaculture. Our main objective is to draw attention to the need for greater understanding of relationships between the hydraulics and productivity of lagoon fish and shellfish. The fishery yields from lagoons vary widely, and, probably, predictably, once such relationships are understood. Furthermore, the productivities of many lagoons could probably be enhanced by hydraulic manipulations, but the hydraulic manipulation is presently risky, except in dystrophic lagoons. The document includes a description of lagoon physics, how hydraulics are likely linked to lagoon productivity, how lagoons might be expected to respond to hydraulic alterations, and a protocol for physical investigations. This latter is a necessary step to protect as well as enhance fisheries and aquaculture resources in lagoons, which are especially vulnerable to degradation and overexploitation.

Book Marketing of Aquacultured Seabass and Seabream from the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book Marketing of Aquacultured Seabass and Seabream from the Mediterranean Basin written by Marie-Christine Monfort and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean finfish species such as the European seabass and the gilthead seabream have, over the last two decades, been attracting considerable attention among aquaculturists and investors. The net result has been a rapid increase in the supply of the finfish to European markets. Accessing these markets with the right product at the right price is a key factor in the success of any commercial aquaculture project. This report describes the current status of the European market for these and other finfish species and the major characteristics of marketing farmed fish in the Mediterranean basin. Part 1 of the report gives an overview of the global European market, including developments in finfish production and marketing performance. Part 2 reviews major market traits of the European seabass and the gilthead seabream as well as other finfish including tilapia. It discusses suppliers to Europe, prices, marketing strategies and product types. Part 3 presents important European market characteristics such as product quality, consistency of supplies and competitive prices. Part 4 gives key figures regarding aquaculture production by country. Part 5 outlines farming technologies that may be more suited to certain Mediterranean countries and may offer new investment opportunities.--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food webs describe the structure of communities and their energy flows, and they represent interactions between species in ecosystems. Recently, we have witnessed rapid development of techniques for both experimental studies and theoretical/computational studies on food webs as well as species interactions. This reprint book is focused on food chains and food webs in aquatic ecosystems, with seven papers published in the corresponding Special Issue of Applied Sciences. The topics include empirical studies on food chains and food webs as well as effects of environmental factors on organisms in aquatic ecosystems.

Book Selected Papers Presented at the Workshop on Biological Reference Points

Download or read book Selected Papers Presented at the Workshop on Biological Reference Points written by Giuseppe Lembo and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop stressed that the concept of reference points (RPs) needs to be closely connected to the management objective of concerned fisheries, taking into account various parameters such as maximum sustainable yield, economic and social benchmark and environment concern. Participants stressed the need to define different RPs for each dimension of management or to identify a single RP aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the system, thereby no longer limited to biological aspects. A review of possible approaches to setting RPs and indicators for Black Sea fisheries emphasized the dynamic nature of recent ecosystem changes. The traffic light approach was illustrated as a means of following dynamic changes and gaining a broad perspective on events at the ecosystem level. The workshop outlined the main RPs obtained by applying the bio-economic optimization models of effort and effort-catch as derived from the theory of population dynamics.

Book Coastal Wetlands Alteration and Remediation

Download or read book Coastal Wetlands Alteration and Remediation written by Charles W. Finkl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into human-induced and natural impacts on coastal wetlands, intended or otherwise, through a series of vignettes that elucidate the environmental insults and efforts at amelioration and remediation. The alteration, and subsequent restoration, of wetland habitats remain key issues among coastal scientists. These topics are introduced through case studies and pilot programs that are designed to better understand the best practices of trying to save what is left of these fragile ecosystems. Local approaches, as well as national and international efforts to restore the functionality of marsh systems are summarily approached and evaluated by their efficacy in producing resilient reclamations in terms of climate-smart habitat conservation. The outlook of this work is global in extent and local by intent. Included here in summarized form are professional opinions of experts in the field that investigate the crux of the matter, which proves to be human pressure on coastal wetland environments. Even though conservation and preservation of these delicate environmental systems may be coming at a later date, many multi-pronged approaches show promise through advances in education, litigation, and engineering to achieve sustainable coastal systems. The examples in this book are not only of interest to those working exclusively with coastal wetlands, but also to those working to protect the surrounding coastal areas of all types.

Book Handbook on the Economics and Management of Sustainable Oceans

Download or read book Handbook on the Economics and Management of Sustainable Oceans written by Paulo A.L.D. Nunes and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trans-disciplinary thematic areas of oceans management and policy require stocktaking of the state of knowledge on ecosystem services being derived from coastal and marine areas. Recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially Goals 14 and 15 explicitly focus on this. This Handbook brings together a carefully chosen set of world-class contributions from ecology, economics, and other development science and attempts to provide policy relevant scientific information on ecosystem services from marine and coastal ecosystems, nuances of economic valuation, relevant legal and sociological response policies for effective management of marine areas for enhanced human well being. The contributors focus on the possible nexus of science-society and science-policy with the objective of informing on decision makers of the governmental agencies, business and industry and civil society in general with respect to sustainable management of Oceans.
