Book Setting the Scene for Gaia and LAMOST IAU S298

Download or read book Setting the Scene for Gaia and LAMOST IAU S298 written by Sofia Feltzing and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaia is an ambitious satellite mission to chart a three-dimensional map of the Milky Way. By measuring the proper motions and parallaxes for a billion stars, Gaia is set to transform the way we study the composition, formation and evolution of our galaxy. Concurrently the LAMOST survey facility in China will make a complementary spectral survey of millions of objects in much of the northern sky. This volume, comprising the reviews and contributed talks presented at IAU Symposium 298, is an up-to-date review of what we know about the Milky Way as a galaxy prior to the launch of Gaia. It covers many topics including the status of dynamical simulations, photometric and spectroscopic surveys, and interstellar matter in the Milky Way, as well as detailed studies of stellar atmospheres. The expert reviews will interest all those working on Milky Way astronomy as well as galaxy formation and evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the experienced amateur astronomer who is wondering if there is something useful, valuable, and permanent that can be done with his or her observational skills, the answer is, “Yes, there is!” This is THE book for the amateur astronomer who is ready to take the next step in his or her astronomical journey. Till now there has been no text that points curious amateur astronomers to the research possibilities open to them. At the 2006 meeting of the Society for Astronomical Sciences, participants agreed that the lack of such a text was a serious gap in the astronomical book market. This book plugs that hole.

Book Observing Variable Stars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerry A. Good
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781852334987
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Observing Variable Stars written by Gerry A. Good and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observing variable stars is one of the major contributions amateur astronomers make to science. There are 36,000 variable stars listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, so it is clearly impossible for the limited number of professional observatories to target even the majority of them. That's where amateur astronomers come in - thousands of them turning their telescopes to the sky every night. Variable star observing is the most popular of "real science" activities for amateurs, and Gerry Good's book provides everything needed. The first part of the book provides a highly detailed account of the various classes of variable star, with examples, illustrations and physical descriptions. The second section covers practical aspects of observing, everything from preparation and planning, through observing techniques, to data management and reduction.

Book Stories of Astronomers and Their Stars

Download or read book Stories of Astronomers and Their Stars written by David E. Falkner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the stories of the astronomical pioneers who forever changed our views of the cosmos. The chapters delve into their fascinating lives over the centuries, showing how these pivotal minds built upon the work of their predecessors and unlocked the unique properties of specific stars. From ancient astronomy to modern imaging and spectroscopy, each tale at once showcases the pace of scientific discovery and the shared passions that drove these starwatchers. Accompanying the stories are a plethora of constellation and finder charts, stellar coordinates and directions, and suggestions for viewing specific stars, all of which are visible to the naked eye or through a small telescope. In addition, the histories on specific star names and designations are given, along with an overview of the most popular catalogues and online databases that readers can use for reference.

Book Cataclysmic Cosmic Events and How to Observe Them

Download or read book Cataclysmic Cosmic Events and How to Observe Them written by Martin Mobberley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Victorian era – or for non-British readers, the mid-to-late nineteenth century – amateur astronomy tended to center on Solar System objects. The Moon and planets, as well as bright comets, were the key objects of interest. The brighter variable stars were monitored, but photography was in its infancy and digital imaging lay a century in the future. Today, at the start of the twenty-first century, amateurs are better equipped than any professionals of the mid-twentieth century, let alone the nineteenth. An amateur equipped with a 30-cm telescope and a CCD camera can easily image objects below magnitude 20 and, from very dark sites, 22 or 23. Such limits would have been within the realm of the 100- and 200-inch reflectors on Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar in the 1950s, but no other observatories. However, even those telescopes took hours to reach such limits, and then the photographic plates had to be developed, fixed, and examined by eye. In the modern era digital images can be obtained in minutes and analyzed ‘on the fly’ while more images are being downloaded. Developments can be e-mailed to other interested amateurs in real time, during an observing session, so that when a cataclysmic event takes place amateurs worldwide know about it. As recently as the 1980s, even professional astronomers could only dream of such instantaneous communication and proc- sing ability.

Download or read book Eclipsing Binary Stars written by Josef Kallrath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focussing on the formulation of mathematical models for the light curves of eclipsing binary stars, and on the algorithms for generating such models, this book provides astronomers, both amateur and professional, with a guide for - specifying an astrophysical model for a set of observations - selecting an algorithm to determine the parameters of the model - estimating the errors of the parameters. It is written for readers with knowledge of basic calculus and linear algebra; appendices cover mathematical details on such matters as optimisation, co-ordinate systems, and specific models. While emphasising the physical and mathematical framework, the discussion remains close to the problems of actual implementation. The book concludes with chapters on specific models and approaches and the authors'views on the structure of future light-curve programs.

Download or read book Information On Line Data in Astronomy written by D Egret and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of storing, managing, and giving access to the huge quantity of data collected by astronomical observatories is one of the major challenges of modern astronomy. At the same time, the growing complexity of data systems implies a change of concepts: the scientist has to manipulate data as well as information. Recent developments of the `WorldWideWeb' bring interesting answers to these problems. The book presents a wide selection of databases, archives, data centers, and information systems. Clear and up-to-date descriptions are included, together with their scientific context and motivations. Audience: This volume provides an essential tool for astronomers, librarians, data specialists and computer engineers.
