Download or read book Liner Shipping Economics written by Jan Jansson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of international liner shipping needs little emphasizing. A large majority of international trade moves by sea, and the liner shipping share in total freight revenue exceeds one-half. Notwithstanding, people in general know surprisingly little about the basic facts of the liner shipping industry, and, in particular, about the economics ofliner shipping. Perhaps because it is an international industry, where shipping lines flying many different flags participate, it has tended to fall in between national accounts of domestic industries. Even transport economists have, generally speaking, treated liner shipping rather 'stepmotherly'; besides the work of Bennathan and Walters (1969), a relatively small group of specialized maritime economists, including A. Stromme-Svendsen, T. Thorburn, S. Sturmey, R. Goss, and B. M. Deakin, have in the post-war period made important contributions to the subject, but so far no coherent and reasonably comprehensive treatise of liner shipping economics has appeared. The first purpose of the present volume is therefore obvious: to provide just that. The book is divided in three parts: Part I The liner shipping industry; Part II Liner service optimization; Part III Economic evaluation of the conference system. Needless to say, all three parts concur to fulfill the first purpose of providing a complete book of liner shipping economics. In Part II a more or less separate, second, purpose has been to develop analytical tools for liner service optimization. Thereby we use different approaches.

Book Plant Design and Operations

Download or read book Plant Design and Operations written by Ian Sutton and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Design and Operations, Second Edition, explores design and operational considerations for oil and gas facilities, covering all stages of the plant cycle, with an emphasis on safety and risk. The oil and gas industry is constantly looking for cost optimization strategies, requiring plant-based personnel to expand their knowledge base outside their discipline or subject. Relevant reference materials are scattered throughout various official standards, while staff lack the immediate hands-on knowledge to safely facilitate the full operational life cycle of the plant. This second edition is a complete source of solutions for major process projects including offshore facilities, chemical plants, oil refineries, and pipelines. This single reference provides insight for safer operations and maintenance best practices. It has been updated with more focus on safety in design and operations, standards, and compliance, and more detailed information on equipment and system/component design. Explores design and operational considerations for oil and gas facilities, covering all stages of the plant cycle, with an emphasis on safety and risk Includes updated new chapters covering principles of design, security regulations, and human factors Includes more relevant equipment information covering storage tanks, valves, and control systems Remains the only source to provide hands-on solutions for process plants in the refining and chemical industries

Book General Cargo Ship Economics

Download or read book General Cargo Ship Economics written by Perry M. Bertolas and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the current economic situation in the cargo shipping industry. Specifically, a detailed supply/demand and cost/benefit analysis of the commercial shipping industry is presented. This is done to determine the relevant trends and cost factors associated with cargo shipping operations. The main findings of the economic review are: (1) certain technological developments are leading to significant cost savings in cargo shipping, (2) the key cost of most any containership operation utilizing U.S. ports, will be the port/cargo handling costs, and (3) the U.S. shipbuilders and ship operating companies are currently facing, and will continue to face, difficult economic times if they persist to compete in the world commercial shipping business in the same way they are now.
