Beginning as an armed peasant uprising in 1967 under the leadership of radical communists, the movement was inspired by the Marxist-Leninist theory of revolution and involved a significant section of the contemporary youth from diverse social strata with a vision of people’s revolution. It inspired similar radical movements in other South Asian countries such as Nepal. Arguing that the history and memory of the Naxalbari movement is fraught with varied gendered experiences of political motivation, revolutionary activism, and violence, this book analyses the participation of women in the movement and their experiences. Based on extensive ethnographic and archival research, the author argues that women’s emancipation was an integral part of their vision of revolution, and many of them identified the days of their activism as magic moments, as a period of enchanted sense of emancipation. The book places the movement into the postcolonial history of South Asia. It makes a significant contribution to the understanding of radical communist politics in South Asia, particularly in relation to issues concerning the role of women in radical politics.

Due to these complex and overlapping factors, rates of violence against women in India have actually increased despite decades of feminist campaigning. It focuses on women from historically marginalised strata of society whose spaces for political participation opened up as a result of the explosion of low-caste identity politics in India since the 1990s, and the introduction of women¿s reserved quotas in local governance bodies. The book draws on extensive fieldwork in the male-dominated political landscape of the large state of Uttar Pradesh. This includes research on women party activists of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), women activists in other political parties, women Members of the regional Legislative Assembly (MLAs), former women Members of Parliament (MPs), women elected in urban and rural local government bodies by virtue of reserved quotas, and women active in informal village politics. The author presents a new comparative framework to analyse women in politics in settings where unfavourable living conditions and restrictive gender regimes are in place. She argues that issues of gender and politics raised by western political scientists need to be reassessed. Rather than considering Indian women¿s political agency and performance as a poor imitation of those of women in more ¿advanced¿ western democracies, she considered them as political subjects in their own right. Furthermore, the idea of an ¿idiosyncratic democracy¿ ¿ the encounter between political activities and South Asian political institutions ¿ is put forward to show that the process of globalisation of politics and institutions might result in a different models of democracy in the Global South. The book provides an example of how women have adapted to the modern political climate in which underdevelopment and inaccessibility of state institutions often make this role essential in everyday life. It will be of interest to academics working on South Asian Studies, International Politics and Women in Politics.

This comparative aspect is particularly important in the context of increasing autonomy in development policy-making in India in the 1990s, divergent development policy approaches and outcomes among states, and the emerging importance of subnational state development policies and programs for women. Spary argues that the state is not a monolith but a heterogeneous, internally differentiated collection of institutions, which offers complex and varying opportunities and consequences for feminists engaging the state. The book demonstrates that the Indian empirical case is illuminating for studies of the gendered politics of development as it highlights the politics of negotiating gender equality strategies in the contemporary context of neo-liberal development, and brings together complex issues of modernity, postcolonialism, identity politics, and equality within the broader context of the world's largest democracy.
