The witch would have taken it all, but luckily, she was discovered—and her plan thwarted—by the love of Ann’s mother, Josephine, who cast the witch out and warned her never to return. It took years before Ann’s ability to trust and find joy in the world started to return, but at around that same time, she and her family were forced to move away from her beloved home to take care of her newly widowed grandmother and help her run the family farm. In time, things start to feel like home once again, but then a strange dream leads her into an unlikely adventure, filled with danger and magic, as she falls victim to the witch once more and finds herself paired with Roteck, the crown prince of the Realm of Chaltay—himself a victim of the witch’s evil machinations—trained at the Palace of Colours, and quested to end the witches reign of terror once and for all. On their side, they have the aid of Cerulea, a tree-nymph, Kempolar, a dwarf, and the ever-watchful moon, but will that be enough to bring peace to the kingdom? A beautifully crafted tale of a storied land peopled with magical creatures, Heir of the Moon takes its readers on a thoughtful and fantastical journey of courage, lost innocence, and the transformative power of love.

Book excerpt: The discovery of gold in the southern Black Hills in 1874 set off one of the great gold rushes in America. In 1876, miners moved into the northern Black Hills. That’s where they came across a gulch full of dead trees and a creek full of gold and Deadwood was born. Practically overnight, the tiny gold camp boomed into a town that played by its own rules and attracted outlaws, gamblers, and gunslingers along with the gold seekers. Deadwood was comprised mostly of single men. In the beginning the ratio of men to women was as high as 8 to 1. The lack of affordable housing, the hostile environment, the high cost of travel, and the expense of living in Deadwood prevented many men from bringing their wives, girlfriends, and families to the growing town. Hordes of prostitutes and madams came to Deadwood to capitalize on the lack of women. By the mid-1880s, there were more than a hundred brothels in the mining community. One of the most notorious cat houses in Deadwood was owned and operated by Al Swearengen. Swearengen was an entertainment entrepreneur who opened a house of ill-repute shortly after he arrived in town in the spring of 1876. Initially known as The Gem, the brothel was host to several well-known soiled doves of the Old West from Eleanora Dumont to Kitty LeRoy. Among the many madams who ran other cat houses in and around Deadwood were Poker Alice Tubbs, Mert O’Hara, and Gertrude Bell. The names of some of the most popular brothels in Deadwood Gulch were the Shy-Ann Room, Fern’s Place, The Cozy Room, the Beige Door, and the Shasta Room. After more than a hundred years of continual operation, the brothels in Deadwood were forced to close in 1980. In the summer of 2020, the Beige Door reopened for business. This time as a museum. The Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission, the Main Street Initiative Committee, and Deadwood History, Inc. (DHI) developed the idea of opening the only brothel tour in the Black Hills. The Brothel Deadwood has had a steady flow of visitors since the tour opened The book An Open Secret: The Story of Deadwood’s Most Notorious Bordellos focuses on infamous cat houses like the Beige Door, those individuals who managed the businesses, their employees, their well-known clientele, the various crimes committed at the locations, and their ultimate demise.

Book excerpt: DNA. Free will. Secret government projects. That was just the beginning. For centuries mankind has been living under the assumption that they were free. It's time they knew the truth. They were created for a specific purpose: to be soldiers, to lead armies. For two decades they were trained for that purpose-physically, mentally, and emotionally. But something went wrong. The two soldiers disappeared, and the project was terminated. Now, centuries later, it is time for Sentry and Sentinel to meet again in an encounter that will decide the fate of humanity. For many people it will be a battle that will be the culmination of many years of intensive work, while for others it will be a sudden and nearly incomprehensible change: an FBI Captain will be forced to confront his prejudices; a reporter will discover a terrible secret from her childhood; a Runner will lead a revolution; and a president will have to face the truth about himself. .For some it will mean betrayals. Book The Spirit of the Game

Download or read book The Spirit of the Game written by Mihir Bose and published by Constable. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spirit of the game was first nurtured on the playing fields of the English public school, and in the pages of Tom Brown's Schooldays- this Corinthian spirit was then exported around the world. The competitive spirit, the importance of fairness, the nobility of the gifted amateur seemed to sum up everything that was good about Britishness and the games they played. Today, sport is dominated by corruption, money, celebrity and players who are willing to dive in the box if it wins them a penalty. Yet, we still believe and talk about the game as if it had a higher moral purpose. Since the age of Thomas Arnold, Sport has been used to glorify dictatorships and was at the heart of cold war diplomacy. Prime Ministers, princes and presidents will do whatever they can to ensure that their country holds a major sporting tournament. Nelson Mandela saw the victory of the Rugby World Cup as essential to his hopes for the Rainbow Nation. Mihir Bose has lived his life around sport and in this book he tells the story of how Sport has lost its original spirit and how it has emerged in the 20th century to become the most powerful political tool in the world. With examples and stories from around the world including how the sport-hating Thomas Arnold become an icon; how a German manufacturer gave Jessie Owens a pair of shoes at the Berlin games of 1936 and went on to dominate the world of sport; how India stole cricket from the ICC; how an Essex car dealer become the most powerful man in Formula 1; and who really sold football out. Praise for Mihir Bose: 'Mihir Bose is India's CLR James.' Simon Barnes, The Times. 'Mihir's insider knowledge is unsurpassed' David Welch. 'His Olympic contacts are second to none. He knows everybody.' Sue Mott.
