It tells the story of a not very successful smuggler who turned legitimate and established the first linen mill in Scotland. It progresses to his son Walter, who published several books in the early 1800s before being lured to Irelandby Chief Secretary Robert Peel to publish the Dublin Journal newspaper. But it was the next generation which brought real success. Alex Thom developed what was to become the leading Irish printing company, culminating in appointment as the country's Queen's Printer. Alex amassed a huge personal fortune which enabled him to establish his beloved Thom's Directory. By his own efforts it grew in content and stature, and quickly became the primary reference source for all things Irish. It was his greatest achievement, and the Irish nation will forever remember him for it. But wealth and a second marriage created downsides, with family divisions and a widow who took "spreading the joy" (to other than family) to a new art form. In the following generations we learn of a suicide, successful migration toArgentinaandSouth Africa, and in TheAntipodes, destitution.

Informed by various theoretical perspectives (eg., critical theory, neo-Marxist, poststructuralist, postcolonial, feminist, critical literacy, Bourdieuian, Foucauldian) key Deakin University scholars pursued their commitments to social justice though education. A certain criticality characterised their work. Individually and collectively they created a national and international reputation for critical scholarship in education. Since that time (the 1980s and 90s), however, most of the Deakin ‘mafia’ have moved to senior academic posts elsewhere in Australian and internationally and their influence in educational research and discourse now continues as members of the ‘Deakin diaspora’. This collection is an account of the stories of many of these scholars. It will provide valuable reading for any scholar of education who is particularly interested in critical pedagogy and the critical project in education more generally. It also provides insights into what makes a faculty of education successful at a particular point in time.

From an Indigenous Australian perspective, the Western concept of heritage is intentionally exclusionary and supports social, political, economic and environmental injustice. Aboriginal people engage with Australia’s lands, waters, and skies every day in entirely different ways, seeing their Country as a living ‘heritage’, but in a unique relationship that engages the individual with Place, Ancestors, Language, and wellbeing analogous to a familial relationship. However, Country is most often relegated by heritage proponents to ‘intangible heritage’ resulting in the concept having little legislative, legal or administrative weight. Book excerpt: This book strategically focuses upon the feasibility of positioning Indigenous Knowledge Systems into tertiary built environment education and research in Australia. Australian tertiary education has little engaged with Indigenous peoples and their Indigenous Knowledge Systems, and the respectful translation of their Indigenous Knowledge Systems into tertiary education learning. In contrast, while there has been a dearth of discussion and research on this topic pertaining to the tertiary sector, the secondary school sector has passionately pursued this topic. There is an uneasiness by the tertiary sector to engage in this realm, overwhelmed already by the imperatives of the Commonwealth’s ‘Closing the Gap’ initiative to advance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tertiary education successes and appointments of Indigenous academics. As a consequence, the teaching of Indigenous Knowledge Systems relevant to professional disciplines, particularly landscape architecture where it is most apt, is overlooked and similarly little addressed in the relevant professional institute education accreditation standards.
