Book An Internist s Illustrated Guide to Gastrointestinal Surgery

Download or read book An Internist s Illustrated Guide to Gastrointestinal Surgery written by George Y. Wu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few clinical disciplines have been transformed so dramatically by advancements in science and technology as gastrointestinal surgery. To begin with, modern ph- macology has virtually eliminated some kinds of surgery altogether. If one were to take a peek at a typical operating room schedule in a busy hospital of the 1960s, gastrectomies of one kind or another would have constituted a large block of the major surgeries. The advent of effective H2-histamine receptor antagonists and, more + + recently, the H ,K -ATPase (proton pump) inhibitors led to a precipitous decline in those procedures such that they are rarely performed today. Exciting new approaches to treating inflammatory bowel diseases and their complications—such as fistulas— with anticytokine therapy may one day have a similarly profound effect on surgery for this condition as well. Beyond pharmaceutics, advances in imaging techniques have greatly facilitated the identification and characterization of pathology in the gastrointestinal tract in a way that would have been unimaginable only a few years ago. Just to visualize the pancreas in some way was a horrendous task until abdominal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, or computer tomography made it simple. The fact that the gut is a hollow organ that can be accessed through the mouth, anus, or even through the wall of the abdomen has been fully exploited with fiberoptic endoscopes that can bend around corners with ease and permit surgery to be conducted through them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to supplement the reader's clinical experience with a carefully designed series of commonly encountered clinical problems in general surgery to simulate the clinical decision-making approach. Each clinical topic includes: a problem-solving approach; system-based essential core knowledge; concise explanations of relevant basic sciences; management pathways (based on the most up-to-date guidelines); FAQs; self-assessment (EMQs, SBAs, T/F). This book, primarily aimed at undergraduates and junior doctors, will guide and stimulate the reader to recognise, recall and apply the relevant facts to given clinical situations and also enhance success at clinical examinations. "Standard textbooks can be daunting. This book is different. I believe that students and young doctors will find this an easy read and will be able to translate the scenarios into an understanding of how clinical pathways are constructed. By asking questions through the pathways students are encouraged to develop their own ideas - a form of problem-based learning rather than learning by rote. Retention of facts is so much easier when they form part of a story." David Cade FRCS, Consultant Surgeon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are the clinical conditions affecting the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. It consists of the esophagus, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, stomach and intestine. The management and treatment of many of these disorders require surgery. Gastrointestinal surgery can be of two types- upper GI surgery and lower GI surgery. Liver resection, pancreaticoduodenectomy and esophagectomy are upper GI surgeries. Colorectal surgery, colectomy and resections for rectal cancer are lower GI surgeries. Some of the other gastrointestinal surgical procedures are appendectomy, biliopancreatic diversion, enterostomy, gastroplasty, hepatectomy, liver transplantation, pancreatectomy, etc. Appendicitis is a potentially fatal condition if left unresolved, but is easily managed with surgery. A minor procedure called colonoscopy can detect colon cancer at an early stage. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in gastrointestinal surgery. It presents this complex subject in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. This book will help new researchers by foregrounding their knowledge in this field.

Book Manual of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

Download or read book Manual of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery written by William H. ReMine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manual of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery was compiled as an aid to surgeons, residents, and students who want to acquire a broader knowl edge of the surgical techniques used in the upper gastrointestinal area. Of necessity, a considerable amount of the work of a general surgeon will be confined to this region. The techniques described herein are those preferred by the authors and most, but not all, of their colleagues at the Mayo Clinic. No attempt has been made to include all of the available possibilities and technical varia tions. Likewise, no attempt has been made to include many of the stapling techniques. Although they are good and quite useful, their inclusion would require a complete and separate volume. The omission of an accepted procedure is not meant as a criticism; our aim was to emphasize only the techniques that are most commonly used in day-to-day practice. Gains in knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the esopha gus, stomach, and duodenum have been highly instrumental in the devel opment of surgical procedures in these areas, particularly the techniques for benign diseases (for example, ulcer, gastritis, and esophagitis).
