Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garrick's Mode of Reading the Liturgy of the Church of England: A New Edition, With Notes, and a Preliminary Discourse on Public Reading Authors; meaning, it being at that period assumed that the qualification alone required to constitute a good public reader, was the apprehension of the author. It was observed, however, that all au thors could not read with correctness even their own works, and they certainly could not be charged with a misapprehension of what they themselves had written; and the Clergy could not be charged with a misapprehension of the Common Prayer, and still less of their own ser mons, whence it became evident that something beyond this one qualification was required to constitute a good public reader. Now observa tion has discovered other qualifications, both Mental and Vocal, to be necessary, and has also indicated the special education and training which is required to produce good public readers. Although this is familiarly known to many who fully estimate the value of guiding princi ples in other occupations, yet, it is often thought that common sense is a sufficient guide in public reading. Book The Rise and Fall of the Incomparable Liturgy

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Incomparable Liturgy written by Bryan D. Spinks and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and the love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.’ The Book of Common Prayer, with local variations, is still used in churches inside and outside the Anglican Communion in over 50 countries and in over 150 languages. The Rise and Fall of the Incomparable Liturgy is the first study to trace the evolution and reception of the BCP, from the Elizabethan settlement of 1559 to the Royal Commission report of 1906, when work on a new prayer book was begun. Written by a world authority, here is an illuminating and highly readable account of the ascent and decline of a world classic, which still informs our common language as well as much of the great literature of the past four centuries. It will appeal not only to students of liturgy but also to general readers interested in history, literature, theology and cultural studies.

Book Anglican Chant and Chanting in England Scotland and America 1660 to 1820

Download or read book Anglican Chant and Chanting in England Scotland and America 1660 to 1820 written by Ruth Mack Wilson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents, for the first time, a history of English liturgical chant as performed in the Church of England and its transmission to churches in Scotland and the United States. In the mid-sixteenth century Reformation, the complex ritual of the Latin rite was replaced by a one-volumeBook of Common Prayer in English. The general nature of the new rubrics, expecially for music, left many of the details of performance to be worked out in traditional ways. Thus the music evolved from its Latin roots in oral, and later written practice. The body of music that makes up the chantingpractice of Anglican and related churches around the world is indeed diversified. Some texts of the liturgy are harmonized in four or more voice parts, often with organ accompaniment, and others are sung in plainsong. The largest group of chants, those for the psalms and canticles, has anidiosyncratic written form and a performance practice that continues to evolve in oral tradition. This music is commonly known as Anglican chant. Its origins in the seventeenth century and its codification in the eighteenth are explored in the choral establishments of the Church of England andparish churches in England, Scotland, and the United States.
