Book excerpt: In the 1950s, 60s and 70s architects like Harry Seidler, Robin Boyd, Ken Woolley, Michael Dysart and Graeme Gunn applied their talents to project homes, bringing high-end design to the suburbs. Backed by Pettit & Sevitt, Merchant Builders and other project builders, architects created small, deceptively simple houses which transformed the look of suburbia. Today, the distance between the architectural profession and suburban housing has never been greater, with Australia’s super-sized, energy-guzzling project homes the biggest in the world. With photographs by Max Dupain, David Moore, Wolfgang Sievers and Eric Sierins alongside original plans, Designer Suburbs explores the relationship between architects, builders and affordable housing since 1900 and the lessons we can learn from twentieth-century designer suburbs.

Book Gardens of History and Imagination

Download or read book Gardens of History and Imagination written by Gretchen Poiner and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether on the ground or in the mind gardens carry meaning. They reflect social and aesthetic values and may express hope, anticipation or grief. Throughout history they have provided a means of physical survival. In creating and maintaining gardens people construe and construct a relationship with their environment. But there is no single meaning carried in the word ‘garden’: as idea and practice it reflects cultural differences in beliefs, values and social organisation. It embodies personal, community even national ways of seeing and being in the world. There are ten essays in Gardens of History and Imagination, each of which examines the role of gardens and gardening in the settlement of New South Wales and in growing a colony and a state. They explore the significance of gardens for the health of the colony, for its economy, for the construction of social order and moral worth. No less do they reveal the significance of forming and reforming personal identities in this process. For the immigrants gardening was an act of settlement; it was also a statement of possession for individuals and for Britain. For a long time it was with memories of ‘home’, often selective and idealised, that settlers made gardens but as the colony developed its own character so did gardening possibilities and practices.

Book excerpt: Landlords to London was originally published in 1975, the first book by Simon Jenkins, later to be editor of the London Evening Standard and the Times, and in 2008 the Chairman on the National Trust. The book is a collective biography of the men who mapped out the metropolis of London as we see it today - also the story of the people of London, who have never sat idly by any argument over 'their' city. The Great Estates of London were carved out of the fields surrounding the medieval City and made their owners fabulously rich, but led also to a remarkable flowering of urban design in the squares, crescents and terraces of Bloomsbury, Belgravia, Islington, Kensington et al. These wealthy families are shadowy figures in London's history, but Simon Jenkins brings their tastes and endeavours to light, while also recording the popular protests and petitions that have led to the ceaseless reform, revision, conservation and regeneration of London's landscape and skyline. 'Extremely informative and witty.' Roy Porter, London: A Social History
