Book excerpt: One night. One brutal attack. One fate irrevocably changed. A year ago, I was an ordinary person. Then one night changed everything. I survived a brutal attack that turned me into a werewolf. Just like that, I went from sipping lattes to sprouting fur and fangs. Unable to cope, I ran away. Now, after a year of soul-searching, I’m back in the Big Easy. It’s time to rebuild the life I left behind and mend my broken bond with Sam, the mate I rejected. Leaving him was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. I just didn’t realize it until it was too late. Unfortunately, my homecoming isn’t all smooth sailing and joyful reunions. There’s someone out there turning innocent people into werewolves—a scenario that’s a little too familiar for my liking. I refuse to stand by and let it happen, but to stop the attacks, I need my mate’s help. While on the hunt, I’m determined to show Sam that my running days are over. This is my chance to fight for our city and win back the heart of the man who’s my destiny. I’m in it for the long howl—I just need to survive long enough to prove that to him.

Book Joyce s Love Stories

Download or read book Joyce s Love Stories written by Christopher DeVault and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his comprehensive study of love in James Joyce's writings, Christopher DeVault suggests that a love ethic persists throughout Joyce's works. DeVault uses Martin Buber's distinction between the true love for others and the narcissistic desire for oneself to frame his discussion, showing that Joyce frequently ties his characters' personal and political pursuits to their ability to affirm both their loved ones and their fellow Dubliners. In his short stories and novels, DeVault argues, Joyce shows how personal love makes possible a broader social compassion that creates a more progressive body politic. While his early protagonists' narcissism limits them to detached engagements with Dublin that impede effective political action, Joyce demonstrates the viability of his love ethic through both the Blooms’ empathy in Ulysses and the polylogic dreamtext of Finnegan's Wake. In its revelation of Joyce's amorous alternative to the social and political paralysis he famously attributed to twentieth-century Dublin, Joyce's Love Stories allows for a better appreciation of the ethical and political significance underpinning the author's assessments of Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coast Left Past is a collection of over 200 early stories written on the West (left) Coast. Temporally grouped, printed on pulp, it represents a myriad of comedic stories, philosophical rants, and refined sugar-sweet epiphanies from the authors past. Coast is fresh and raw at a time in world history that is dominated by bad sushi. Containing the abandonment of youth and the libido of a moose, here is a book to make you remember what the inside of a damp butterfly, the life of a sad writer, the taste of cold purple, and the smell of a late Thursday night feels like

Book excerpt: A Regency series debut from the New York Times bestselling author whose “endearing characters and warm-hearted stories never fail to inspire and delight” (Sabrina Jeffries). As heir to a title and great wealth, Will Masterson should have stayed home and tended his responsibilities. Instead he went to war. Now, after perilous years fighting the French, he intends his current mission to be his last. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her. Knowing herself to be too tall, strong, and unconventional to appeal to a man, Athena Markham has always gloried in her independence. But for the first time in her life, she finds a man who might be her match. Two of a kind, too brave for their own good, Athena and Will vow to do whatever it takes to vanquish San Gabriel’s enemies. For neither will back down from death, and only together can they find happiness and a love deeper than any they’d dared imagine . . . Praise for the Rogues Redeemed series “Putney begins her new Rogues Redeemed series on a high note with an impeccably written book that realistically integrates the cost of the Napoleonic Wars into a compelling story that neatly balances dangerous adventures and passionate romance.”—Booklist “A thrilling, romantic tale.”—Bookpage, Top Pick of the Month “Putney’s multifaceted and well-developed characters add depth to this romance, which is complete with the trials of war and the promise of future series installments.”—Publishers Weekly

Book Thomas Hardy

Download or read book Thomas Hardy written by R. G. Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.

Book The Return of Gabriel

  • Author : Richard V. Shriver

  • ISBN : 1599266725

Download or read book The Return of Gabriel written by Richard V. Shriver and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of letters is a continuation of my earlier collection, The Gabriel Letters. I stumbled on the idea of writing imagined letters from an archangel advising a young guardian, while reading an introduction to C. S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters. It has been a marvelous way - perhaps delusional - of standing back and imagining that I can see the world through angel eyes. The amazing result for me has been a sense of objectivity and good will. The intended purpose of the letters is to apply to all things the idea of God's complete love (self-sacrificing, eternal, parent-like love). This idea is the center of Christianity. It is Jesus' message, and it is St. Paul's 'good news." If we desire to be Christian, we should begin, it seems to me, by attempting to apply Jesus' teachings to all things: to our behavior; to our human relationships, especially family; to our work and our business dealings; to the way we run our churches; and to the way we study the scriptures. If we take Jesus seriously, we must reevaluate much of the Bible - the parts which are not specifically the teachings of Jesus. Jesus, Himself, questioned much of the scriptures. These letters cover a variety of subjects, many of them Biblical. Some Biblical passages need correction in light of Jesus' ideas. Some Biblical passages are so marvelous that we need to lift them to the sky and shout, 'Look at this!" Some Biblical passages are confusing, and we need to wrestle with them. But in all, we should be trying to see them through Jesus' eyes. To see through Jesus' eyes is, I suspect, what the true Gabriel wants, and it is the intent of this book. - Richard V. Shriver

Book excerpt: Let yourself be swept off your feet by the dashing heroes and heroines of the Rogues Redeemed series. Includes the first three books; Once a Soldier, Once a Rebel and Once a Scoundrel. Once a Soldier: As heir to a title, Will Masterson should have stayed home and tended his responsibilities. Instead, he went to war. After years fighting the French, he intends his current mission to be his last. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her. Knowing herself to be too tall, strong and unconventional, Athena Markham has always gloried in her independence. Yet for the first time in her life, she finds a man who might be her match. Two of a kind, too brave for their own good, Athena and Will vow to do whatever it takes to vanquish San Gabriel’s enemies, while finding a love deeper than they’d ever imagined. Once a Rebel: As Washington burns, Callista Brooke is trapped in the battle between her native England and her adopted homeland. She is on the verge of losing everything, including her life, when a handsome Englishman cuts through the violent crowd to claim her as his. Lord George Gordon Audley was Callista’s best friend, but his attempt to rescue her from a loathsome arranged marriage had him sent on a one-way trip to the penal colony of Australia. Against all odds, he survived, and now he vows to do whatever is necessary to protect Callista. But their friendship has become a dangerous passion that may save or destroy them when they challenge the aristocratic society that exiled them both. Once a Scoundrel: Gabriel Hawkins was born to command the sea, until he left the Royal Navy in disgrace and was disowned by his family. Now captaining his own ship, earning his living through dubious means, he is the best choice to ransom an aristocratic beauty captured by Barbary pirates. Facing the prospect of a life as a harem slave, Lady Aurora Lawrence is beyond horrified. Her only hope of escape lies in a quiet, steely captain who ignites an attraction in her that burns hot within the close confines of his ship. But even if they endure the perils of the waves, can their love survive a return to England, where the distance between a disgraced captain and an earl’s daughter is wider than the ocean?
