Book Mutual Fund Shareholder Letters

Download or read book Mutual Fund Shareholder Letters written by Alexander Hillert and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fund companies regularly send shareholder letters to their investors. We use textual analysis to investigate whether these letters matter for fund flows and whether they predict performance and investment styles. We find that fund investors react to the writing style of shareholder letters; a less negative tone and a personal writing style lead to higher net flows. Thus, fund companies can use shareholder letters as a strategic instrument to avoid redemptions. Letter writing style is informative for fund investors as it predicts changes in fund managers' risk taking and investment styles. A personal writing style additionally predicts better fund performance.

Book Investing for Growth

Download or read book Investing for Growth written by Terry Smith and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buy good companies. Don’t overpay. Do nothing. Some people love to make successful investing seem more complicated than it really is. In this anthology of essays and letters written between 2010–20, leading fund manager Terry Smith delights in debunking the many myths of investing – and making the case for simply buying the best companies in the world. These are businesses that generate serious amounts of cash and know what to do with it. The result is a powerful compounding of returns that is almost impossible to beat. Even better, they aren’t going anywhere. Most have survived the Great Depression and two world wars. With his trademark razor-sharp wit, Smith not only reveals what these high-quality companies really look like and where to find them (as well as how to discover impostors), but also: - why you should avoid companies that abuse the English language - how most share buybacks actually destroy value - what investors can learn from the Tour de France - why ETFs are much riskier than most realise - how ESG investors often end up with investments that are far from green or ethical - his ten golden rules for investment - and much, much more. Backed up by the analytical rigour that made his name with the cult classic, Accounting for Growth (1992), the result is a hugely enjoyable and eye-opening tour through some of the most important topics in the world of investing – as well as a treasure trove of practical insights on how to make your money work for you. No investor’s bookshelf is complete without it.

Book Quality Shareholders

Download or read book Quality Shareholders written by Lawrence A. Cunningham and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone can buy stock in a public company, but not all shareholders are equally committed to a company’s long-term success. In an increasingly fragmented financial world, shareholders’ attitudes toward the companies in which they invest vary widely, from time horizon to conviction. Faced with indexers, short-term traders, and activists, it is more important than ever for businesses to ensure that their shareholders are dedicated to their missions. Today’s companies need “quality shareholders,” as Warren Buffett called those who “load up and stick around,” or buy large stakes and hold for long periods. Lawrence A. Cunningham offers an expert guide to the benefits of attracting and keeping quality shareholders. He demonstrates that a high density of dedicated long-term shareholders results in numerous comparative and competitive advantages for companies and their managers, including a longer runway to execute business strategy and a loyal cohort against adversity. Cunningham explores dozens of corporate practices and policies—such as rational capital allocation, long-term performance metrics, and a shareholder orientation—that can help shape the shareholder base and bring in committed owners. Focusing on the benefits for corporations and their investors, he reveals what draws quality shareholders to certain companies and what it means to have them in an investor base. This book is vital reading for investors, executives, and directors seeking to understand and attract the kind of shareholders that their companies need.

Book Capital Returns

Download or read book Capital Returns written by Edward Chancellor and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age of serial asset bubbles and spectacular busts. Economists, policymakers, central bankers and most people in the financial world have been blindsided by these busts, while investors have lost trillions. Economists argue that bubbles can only be spotted after they burst and that market moves are unpredictable. Yet Marathon Asset Management, a London-based investment firm managing over $50 billion of assets has developed a relatively simple method for identifying and potentially avoiding them: follow the money, or rather the trail of investment. Bubbles whether they affect a whole economy or merely a single industry, tend to attract a splurge of capital spending. Excessive investment drives down returns and leads inexorably to a bust. This was the case with both the technology bubble at the turn of the century and the US housing bubble which followed shortly after. More recently, vast sums have been invested in mining and energy. From an investor's perspective, the trick is to avoid investing in sectors, or markets, where investment spending is unduly elevated and competition is fierce, and to put one's money to work where capital expenditure is depressed, competitive conditions are more favourable and, as a result, prospective investment returns are higher. This capital cycle strategy encourages investors to eschew the simple 'growth' and 'value' dichotomy and identify firms that can deliver superior returns either because capital has been taken out of an industry, or because the business has strong barriers to entry (what Warren Buffett refers to as a 'moat'). Some of Marathon's most successful investments have come from obscure, sometimes niche operations whose businesses are protected from the destructive forces of the capital cycle. Capital Returns is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practical implementation of the capital cycle approach to investment. Edited and with an introduction by Edward Chancellor, the book brings together 60 of the most insightful reports written between 2002 and 2014 by Marathon portfolio managers. Capital Returns provides key insights into the capital cycle strategy, all supported with real life examples from global brewers to the semiconductor industry - showing how this approach can be usefully applied to different industry conditions and how, prior to 2008, it helped protect assets from financial catastrophe. This book will be a welcome reference for serious investors who looking to maximise portfolio returns over the long run.

Book The Falcon Method A Proven System for Building Passive Income and Wealth Through Stock Investing

Download or read book The Falcon Method A Proven System for Building Passive Income and Wealth Through Stock Investing written by David Solyomi and published by TCKPublishing.com. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beat the Market and Grow Your Cash Flow Without Becoming a Full-time Investor Most investment strategies are just too complicated, too risky, or too subjective. Typical investment strategies completely ignore human emotions, and making emotional investment decisions is the most common cause of losses for investors. Risky trading strategies advertised with get-rich-quick hype may create big wins for a lucky few, but most people just end up with big losses and nothing to show for all their hard work and the emotional rollercoaster they endured. Creating and maintaining real wealth through stock investing requires a long-term investment strategy that properly manages risk and prevents emotional decision-making so that you never suffer major losses. The FALCON Method is completely different than typical stock investing strategies. The reason it beats the market again and again is because it uses an evidence-based stock selection process that anyone can follow. You don't need to get lucky, take big risks, or fly by the seat of your pants in order to retire wealthy from stock investing. Successful investing requires structured decision-making based on a proven process, and that's exactly how The FALCON Method was created.
