DEGREESome {fruitjs of Solitude IN Reflections and Maxims IGNORANCE 1. It is admirable to consider how many Millions of People come into, and go out of the World, Ignorant of themselves, and of the World they have lived in. 2. If one went to see WindsorCastle, or Hampton-Court, it would be strange not to observe and remember the Situation, the Building, the Gardens, Fountains, &c. that make up the Beauty and Pleasure of such a Seat? And yet few People know themselves; No, not their own Bodies, the Houses of their Minds, the most curious Structure of the World; a living walking Tabernacle: Nor the World of which it was made, and out of which it is fed; which would be so much our Benefit, as well as our Pleasure, to know. We cannot doubt of this when we are told that the Invisible Things of God are brought to light by the Things that are seen; and consequently we read our Duty in them as often as we look upon them, to him that is the Great and Wise Author of them, if we look as we should do. 3. The World is certainly a great and stately Volume of natural Things; and may be not improperly styled the Hieroglyphicks of a better: But, alas! how very few Leaves of it do we seriously turn over! This ought to be the Subject of the Education of our Youth, who, at Twenty, when they should be fit for Business, know little or nothing of it. EDUCATION 4. We are in Pain to make them Scholars, but not Men! To talk, rather than to know, which is true Canting. 5. The first Thing obvious to Children is what is sensible; and that we make no Part of their Rudiments. 6. We press their Memory too soon, and puzzle, strain and load them with Words and Rules; to know Grammer and Rhetorick, and a strange Tongue or two, that it is ten to one may never be useful to th

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruits of Solitude: Reflections and Maxims Relating to the Conduct of Human Life The publishers feel that they have been fortunate in their discovery of William Penn's Fruits of Solitude for the fourth volume of the Lakeside Classics. Although the book was immensely popular during the latter half of the eighteenth century, yet the scattered volumes of its many editions have found their way to but few private libraries, and the work is to-day almost unknown. Still, it possesses the same charm that carried it through its early editions. The publication of the book as an American classic may and undoubtedly will be questioned, but Penn's connection with the early history and settlement of the country warrants the extension of the claim of America to anything connected with him. Although the Maxims were first published in England, as Mr. John Vance Cheney, the editor of the present edition, informs the reader in his Introductory Note, yet the volume from which this edition is copied was printed in Philadelphia in 1797, presumably on type cast in the young republic. Book excerpt: 'Full of heart.' Michael Harris, author of Solitude Being alone isn't something to endure - it's something to relish. ________ The average adult spends about a third of his or her waking time alone. Yet research suggests we aren't very good at using, never mind enjoying, alone time. Rising to the challenge, travel writer Stephanie Rosenbloom explores the joys and benefits of being alone in four mouth-watering journeys to the cities of Paris, Istanbul, Florence and New York, in four seasons. This is a book about the pleasures and benefits of savouring the moment, examining things closely, using all your senses to take in your surroundings, whether travelling to faraway places or walking the streets of your own city. Through on-the-ground observations and anecdotes, and drawing on the thinking of artists, writers and innovators who have cherished solitude, Alone Time illuminates the psychological arguments for alone time and lays bare the magic of going solo.
